Subject: Popular songs From: Dave Wynn Date: 14 Feb 02 - 07:21 PM I created a thread a while back about (Musical Postitution) and as a result of this I would now like to ask for a set list of very (Very) popular songs that would be appropriate to the most untutored of audiences. They need to be without political message and ones that would be recognised by an audience that is not "Folk or Blues aware" I don't need lyrics or music (good old mudcat will provide those) Just songs that you can sing and everyone will have heard somewhere. (nothing with more than three chords and one minor) I can start by showing the level as: Gypsy Rover Wild Rover Black Velvet Band Blow the Man Down Crystal Chandeliers I need about 30 more :-) Your help (as always) would be appreciated. Subject: RE: Help: Popular songs From: Snuffy Date: 15 Feb 02 - 08:31 AM Most of these may be well-known in America, but Spot is in England. I think most 'non-folkies' in an English audience would never have heard of them - hell, I don't know half of them. What about 10 Green Bottles; Lily the Pink; Green grow the Rushes-O; A-Roving; Drunken Sailor? all good singalongs. WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Help: Popular songs From: 8_Pints Date: 16 Feb 02 - 05:04 AM Spot, My pet hates have already been mentioned: Wild Rover Whisky in the Jar Three old ladies locked in the lavatory, etc but I really love the alternative lyrical melody used by Sean Cannon for the Wild Rover. Its breathtaking! Some more popular songs might be those taught in school. For instance: Martin said to his man Barbara Allen Lord of the Dance Bread & Fishes Bob vG PS I have been told that the 'Three old ladies locked in a lavatory' comes from Cornwall and was associated with subsidence from mining that could cause buildings to collapse, especially WC at the foot of the garden. |
