Hi all;

I will be presenting a paper at an academic conference (on travel writing in Ireland and the UK), at the University of Aberdeen June 21-22. I hope to be able to turn this into a longer trip; heading south to Avebury just after the solstice, maybe to Glastonbury, and Oxfordshire. I might fly into the UK on or before June 15th, since the flights are cheaper. If I can manage it, I also want to stay on to attend a conference on sacred sites in Yorkshire, July 6-7...that would be a nice long lovely trip! Also, I have been wanting to hike the Ridgeway and this might be a good time to do that if there are a few days of good weather I can camp out in.

If any Mudcatters want to hook up for a drink, or offer me a place to sleep (!!! me being an underpaid teacher and all) let me know. I have friends who will be living in London for the summer so will probably stay with them at some point, but would hope to hook up with Micca and Liz the Squeak and whoever else is around...

BTW, speaking of travelling, I am moving to new digs in Boston and will now have a guest room, so any visitors now have an option there a

Just a note on Glastonbury - I highly recommend a visit there. I certainly enjoyed that part of England.

Yes, well, lucky to get my paper accepted! I must now find a way to finance the trip. My department at Emerson does not generally give any travel funds to adjunct faculty like me, but the chair did say if he had anything leftover at the end of the fiscal year hw could give me something...

In any case I am planning to go and will find a way! swirlygirl, where in England do you live? I will be all over the place!

Hope to drop in on the Popular Halfwit in Wiltshire, too, as he is very near the Ridgeway.

Hollowfox, yes, I am indeed sad to miss Old Songs! I had hoped to go aga8in this year, but the dates conflict! My paper is tentatively titled: "Chipping Away at the Sacred: The Unintentional Damage to Standing Stones by Neo-Pagan Pilgrims"

If you can, you might want to get up to Orkney - loads of ancient standing stones, and a musical population. There's a ferry from Aberdeen, or you could drive/train to Caithness, and sail from there.

You will - if you go to Drumnadrochit, have an opportunity to take part in my favorite sport... go to Arquirt (spelt wrong) castle, the one from the Doctor's photo of Nessy, find the wee door in the turret on the lough, wait until you hear tourests in the castle, sing haunting song in Gaelic, creep away before they find you... give tourests Ban Shee story to bring home... Genie and I did it with the pipes, lot's of fun. When Pop calls next I'll tell him you will be in the neighborhood. He should be here around Easter. Cheers Larry

Larry that sounds like a very cool idea! where abouts is it? And I would like to see Orkney...

Do get in touch if Ralph is in New York, I mean to get there myself this spring at least once, so I might make the journey to see him there, too (and you and Genie of course; maybe we wold have time to make music this time around?)

Urquart castle is on the West/North shore of Loch Ness, just South of Drumnadrochit; well worth a visit.

You're welcome to come stay, but you knew that already:-)

Any way that Joe Public can get to hear/see your paper, it sounds interesting?

I am not sure if the conference is open to the public but many of these sorts of things (i.e. not so obscure academically as one more likely to be restricted to registered attendees) are. I will try to find out; my London pals might want to attend, too.

Strewth, that run was a ball-buster. Sunday was a lovely sunny day, so I went for it. I parked in town and ran out to the Tor, up the south col, through the Tower, and scree-ran down the north east face. I've never felt that ill on a run before. 521 feet in a third of a mile!

Back in sunny Leeds now.

RUNNING up the Tor? That's pretty ambitious. I found walking up the darn thing to be a more than sufficient workout! I would be scared I'd collapse!

Thanks for the invite, Skipjack! I have an old friend in Leeds, is that nearby?

The Ridgeway is an old prehistoric (??) "track" road that stretches from Marlborough to Avebury; along the way are lots of chalk hill figures, old stones (like the Greywethers, said to be where some of the Avebury stones were hewn from) and lovely landscape features; you can get entire maps of the area. Some lovely countryside to see, good hiking, nice groves of trees to sleep in...I think the map also lists campsites and B&Bs along the way...I am figuring it would take four or five days to walk it comfortably (7-8 miles a day), fewer to walk more miles but with time to take a nice long break midday...The weather is a factor, too, when one is camping out as I'd like to do.
