I was tickled to read this, bein' as 'ow I'm a Radcliffe lad missen! Long-exiled now, I hasten to add. I remember my dad throwing small change into the street in disgust every time the Earl of Wilton's man came round, once a year, to collect the hated ground rent. When I was a lad any otter worth its salt would have stayed well away from any of the waterways of Radcliffe and environs, which were no more than industrial sewers of the worst kind. Things are much better now. I don't know whether there have been any recent sightings of otters though!

I am a bold otter, as you shall hear,
I've rambled the country all round;
I valued no dogs far or near,
In the water, nor yet on the ground.
I valued no dogs, far or near,
But I roved through the country so wide,
Till I came to a river so clear,
That did Clifton and Prestwich divide

As through the wild country I rambled,
I liv'd at extravagant rate;
On eels, chubs and gudgeons I feasted;
The fisherman all did me hate;
Yet still up the rivers I went,
Where the fishes my stomach did cheer,
till a challenge from Radcliffe they sent me,
They quickly would stop my career.

Yes, there is a version by Brain Dewhurst (vocals) on the LP 'The Hunter and The Hunted' (presumably with Tom Tiddlers Ground). I can't recall the tune they used. The Tune used by Harry B. is 'The Earlsdon Calling On Song' (as on 'Frost and Fire' by the watersons).

The song is from Harland and Wilkinsons' Ballads and Songs of Lancashire' "taken from a Manuscript copy supplied by John Higson of Droylsden"

Ha-Ha! Found the words in April 1976 issue of Tamlyn magazine. (It pays to be a hoarder!!) I'll scan the text and the dots and email to MMario when I get into work on Monday.

Re: Tom Tiddlers Ground: I seem to remember it was the band that Brian Dewhurst was in. I think he had to change his stage name to Brian Preston, reflecting his home town.

Muggins Fancy sadly broke up many years ago; although I recently met up with one the ex-members who still sings. (Remember 'Lumpy Tums?).

By the way, I got it wrong, I think the group on my tape is 'Tom Tiddlers ?Ground', not Muggins Fancy. They were both on the same BBC Folkweave program.

Does anyone know of them?

I didn't know where the song came from, and I have never heard Harry Boardman's version - must look out for it.

I've got this song on a record called "a Lancashire Mon", by the late Harry Boardman. Unfortunatly my record player is in bits in the loft so I can't transcribe it for you perhaps someone else has this record and can do it for you, or if you wait a week or so, I'll see if I can put the player back together

I have an old tape of a BBC program with this fine song performed by a group called Muggins Fancy, I believe, from Stoke On Trent.

Before I make the effort to transcribe it, does anyone already have it (Doesn't seem to be in the Database). Also, not all the words are clear on the tape.
