Aside from the instruments you are already in various stages of learning, what other ones do you really want to learn? My own current wish list includes concertina, hammer dulcimer, harmonica, harp, and bouzouki. (I am, of course, completely ignoring the question of how many instruments one can realistically learn to play (decently) in one lifetime. --- not to mention the cost of all those instruments!) But if you could learn your whole future instruments wish list, what would it include?

I've always been drawn to anything with strings on. As a guitar player I've found it reasonably easy to cross over on to other stringed instruments, with the exeption of the banjo. I used to own one years ago but got so frustrated that I couldn't get the picking patterns under my fingers I sold it. I may be ready to try again! Trouble is, I don't know one make from another so I'll have to let my pocket be my guide!

I'm tempted to add fiddle as I'd dearly love to be able to play one but a) I get weird and bad aches and pains that I can't get through whenever I try fiddle b) my patience runs out far too quikly with a left hand that knows what it wants to do and a usless right hand.

I'll be happy if I can learn to play the instruments I already have that way I want to play them. I DO have a Collings 12 fret 000 slot head on order and it's supposed to be my last guitar ever { if my wife is listening }. And I do lust after an F style mandolin... but that's another story.

And Rick - Mario getting a strap for his bones almost sounds like something nasty - can I get one too ?

Thanks - I forgot to put bones on my list - Irish and Quebecois - and Les Pieds.

Fiddle is my current main instrument and just for your info, I'd estimate it takes about three lifetimes to learn! But it's incredibly satisfying on that rare occasion when you actually (almost) master some aspect of it. Zhenya

and, I would replace some that I gave away or sold, including a piano, which I can play, and Native American flute; plus, get my Native American drum repaired (could do myself, just haven't, yet.)

Remaining instruments to be acquired:
- Nice older Gibson Mastertone Banjo
- A decent F5 mandolin knock off
- A nice OOO sized vintage mahogany Martin
- A nice 12 string that has a comfortable/thin neck and actually has a bottom end to its sound
- A nice older Fender Stratocaster

Have a B/C button accordion on order which is due in this month, that's been a goal for over a year now. Can't imagine anything else except keeping my modest guitar skills going at the same time. However......if I'm allowed enough time, I'd like to learn the fiddle.

The word has been corrupted over the years John and was originally "Hurty Girdy" which refers to a woman's slimming but painful undergarment. A woman being laced into one of these made the same sound as this instrument, hence the name.

I would like to get my hands on a finer guitar (preferably 000 or 0M sized -- that Collings that Wesley has on order will do just fine) and a National Style "O" (for learning to play a little bottleneck blues).

Mandolin Brothers is so close...yet the money seems so far away.

After reading through the replies, (without doing an actual count; wouldn't want to waste any more work time on that) I got the impression the leading contenders are:

- Those special guitars (write in your dream guitar here). - Mandolin - Hurdy-gurdy. (I liked the Hurdy-gurdy website too.)

I second the comment by Greg Stephens about the fiddle. However, just because one took it up 20 years ago doesn't mean you can play it. It just means you're twenty years closer to actually being able to play! (You made me smile though! Maybe all I need is another 13 years here.)

And SharonA has hit on another problem…space to house all these instruments.

Sorry not to comment on everyone's choices…but I'm happy to know people are out there who dream about playing all these interesting instruments.

I've played classic guitars all my life and plan to continue. But lately I've taken a liking to the steel-string sound for certain songs, so I'd like to get my hands on a nice li'l steel-string parlor guitar (without having to mortgage the ranch to buy it). Dreadnaut fans notwithstanding, I've read (and my ears tend to confirm) that the parlor guitar is the best size and configuration for optimum balance between bass, mid-range, and treble in a steel-string guitar. (I've noticed that the first thing a new Dreadnaut owner says when he/she demonstrates his/her new guitar is, "Listen to that bass!!")
