I recently found an MP3 of Ron singing Sonny's Dream. What a change from every other version I've heard. Firstly I didn't realize it was 25 years old. Secondly I guess he's as much an actor as he is a singer and song writer. How come he is so poorly known on tis side of the river?

Years ago I saw a film called Hank Williams, The Concert The Never Gave. starring Sneezy Waters and Dixie Seatle. Apparently Ron played Hank Williams in the show on a road tour. And apparently he is a fixture in Canadian television. Does he tour? Can anyone reccomend a disk.

Don

Hello Don,

Ron's a great writer. I do think he's still touring. He was at the last Stan Roger's festival I attended.

As for the CD try and get "Cryer's Paradise". The production is a bit commercial but there are great songs on it.

I've been a fan for a long time--and I don't impress easily! I saw him for the first time live recently in Ottawa (Canada)and can say that Ron is a wonderful entertainer as well as a great songwriter.

My wife(a fan!), and my bandmate who is a DJ, have been bugging organizers to bring Ron to our city's folk festival. I'm happy to say he'll be performing here this summer.

Ron's website is Here

His touring schedule this year is open for more bookings. If you're interested in seeing him perform in your area, contact his management Here

Yup, I saw him on the same tour three weeks ago, in a TINY Mexican restaurant in our little town (he was playing there, not having tacos, the kitchen manager is a music promoter). What a great all-round writer and singer.

I was really surprised they booked him in that room instead of the concert hall. Me and the other 32 paying customers got a great close-up show.

Funny, I didn't know he did a tour as Hank Williams. I saw the original live world premiere of "Hank Williams, The Show He Never Gave" in the old Broken Arms (officially the Beacon Arms), a large seedy beer parlour in uptown Ottawa, with Sneezy and the rest of the original cast. In 1977. It's a what-if piece recreating how the concert Hank was scheduled to play on New Year's Eve 1953 might have gone had he not died enroute to the gig.

I don't think Ron Hynes is exactly a fixture on Canadian TV though, he most likely shows up in some of those made-down-east movies with the rest of the Maritime Mafia.

From: little john cameron

Ron has some other fine songs. This is my favourite.

LEAVING ON THE EVENING TIDE

I am leaving on the evening tide
Now Mother don't go cryin'
For my own tears are hard enough to hide
And won't survive sad parting
For I am bound away to Americay
No I can't delay, No my mind won't change
Let your young man say goodbye, before your boy begins to cry
I am leaving on the evening tide
I am leaving on the evening tide

Look here old man, I've done all I can
I can't rise up your burden
For the land is done, and your course is run
Mine is barely begun
So I am bound away, and I know what you'll say
You'll curse the day that you gave me my name
And with your heart so betrayed with cruelty and pride
But I am leaving on the evening tide
I am leaving on the evening tide

I am leaving on the evening tide
Make no mistake my darling
And were I to gaze once more into your eyes
I would still be in your arms by morning
So I am bound away before the break of day
This note explains what I could never say
Please don't wait for me, forget the tears we cried

I am leaving on the evening tide
I am leaving on the evening tide

Yeah, Don. Ron's a good guy. Written a lotta fine songs, but "Sonny's Dream" has paid the bills for a long time. Met him about thirty years ago with another amazing songwriter who hasn't had a lot of ink: Joe Hall.

Ron comes to Toeonto on rare occasions, but I think he's simply a "Maritimes kind of guy". You see his name occasionally in the music credits for films and documentaries.

Cheers

Rick

P.S. Another good performer from "Down East" (born in Scotland) is Little john Cameron.

about 20 years ago in newfoundland Codco had a tv show and WGB (Wonderful Grand Band) were regular guests. Ron was a front man for that group which also included Kelly Russell among other noteable local musicians. I saw them play at the university (MUN). Sonny's Dream was so popular at the time that Ron very graciously stopped singing and let the whole audience of a couple of thousand finish the song without missing a beat or a word. At the end he simply said "Thanks! You sing it better than I do."

I met Ron back in September when he was doing the Cape Breton, NS Celtic Colours Fest. It was the first time I heard him play live (I'm from Philly, PA).

He told me that he'd never toured the States, just Canada and Europe, but he'd like to play some festivals down here. I've been doing what I can to bring him to a festival where I am but I don't have many connections. He's a brilliant song writer. He has a new-ish CD that is only available through him. It is a classic, just him and guitar. I think it's $25 Canadian total. Here's the address if you're interested: Ron Hynes P.O. Box 1514 Station C St. John's, Newfoundland Canada A1C 5N8
