Hi, folkies -- I'll be attending a conference in Rhinebeck, NY, the weekend of Sept. 5-7 and would love to meet some Mudcateers in the neighborhood. I know this is early, but if I think I"ll be able to visit with some of you, I can add a day or two of vacation to either side of the conference schedule. We're putting together the vacation schedule now, so let me know who's up there and what might be possible. I'll be staying with friends in Red Hook, NY. ...

My Very Dear WW,

Rhinebeck NY is hardly Upstate New Yrok. Maybe to a New York Cityite it is but to the greater New Yorkers, Dutchess County is barely in the Southern Tier. Infact the Dutchess County, to many, myself included, the loveliest place on the Hudson is a bedroom county for people working in NYC.

But while you are there visit the Aerodrome and see some air craft that rivals Da Vinci's Ornithopters in beauty. Some designed by noted naval architect, Captain Nat Herreschoff.

Upstate, indeed.

Don

Father Charlie, champion Irish concertina player, runs a regular series in Red Hook. I'll get the particulars for you. There's also a good concert series in Hyde Park. We're only about 45/50 minutes east of Rhinebeck and Red Hook, just over the Connecticut/New York border. If we're around on the specific dates, we'd love to get together to hear you play your guitar and sing at the SAME TIME! (Way to go, gal!) Then we can have dinner somewhere nearby. Priscilla Herdman and her husband, Dick Hermans, live in Pine Plains. He has a great bookstore (new books) in Millerton, New York. Don's right about the Aerodrome, but Rhinebeck is really just a tad out of the commuting range for those New York City folk he's warned you about, and so are we here in Sharon, Connecticut. Keep in touch. Maybe we can get Dan Milner (Liam's brother) and Dick Greenhaus and Susan of the DT to come up and join the party. Karen k could make it over, too, from her home in New Britain. Caroline and I will look forward to sharing a song or two with you.

Sandy

That would be great. Let's definitely stay in touch and see if we can get together a gathering of the tribes.

And Don, I am so embarrassed. You have to realize that to me, anything east of the Mississippi River and north of Tennessee is Yankee territory and it's all pretty much an indistinguished geographic mass, marked by way too many trees, cars and people.

Mick -- wha'dya mean STAY for the FSGW. Isn't it in Octoer? I'll plan on being back for that, you betcha. In fact, one of my best singing pals in the world is considering bringing one of her best singing pals in the world and coming along with me. So you may be getting three frabjous chick singers for the price of ... well, three ...

Now that my pulse has settled back into place (and plummetted (is that right oh editor?) in bitter disappointment to find that the bubble-wrap goddess is NOT going to be in my neck of the woods)

Hope you have a great time.

Wyowoman: Like Don said, That's downstate. Do go see the Aerodrome. My wife and I went to Rhinebeck for my fortieth birthday and it was a blast. Franklin Roosevelt's home at Hyde Park is scant minutes from Rhinebeck and interesting too. By the way, Rhinebeck is only Upstate New York if you're from New York City. I'll be in Maryland the next weekend recreating the battle of Anteitam (Sharpsburg to you, dear lady) have fun! Neil

Having lived my first 28 years in upstate New York (Penn Yan, in the heart of the Finger Lakes) I can understand the confusion. Having lived five years in New York city (the most provincial city in the world), I was always amazed when co-workers would refer to "upstate" as anything above 125th street. Rhinebeck probably qualifies, by some terms.

MY GOD! I'd forgotten there was someone (else) from Penn Yan on the forum! (Though I'm a 'newebie' to PY - I've only been here 25 years or so...)

Wyo,

Duane D. & I are in the general area. We are about 20 minutes east of Peekskill, which you can find on most maps. 5th-7th appears to be a Thursday to Saturday. Was that when you meant? And is Labor Day really on Sept. 2nd this year? Boy, that's early! If it's after Labor Day, I'm probably back at work. Keep us in mind, anyway. murph10566 is a new member (pub & Irish music) who is also in the area. Hope you have a great visit!

best,

bbc

Hey, Wyowoman, I am only about an hour south of Rhinebeck and would be so delighted to meet you and hear you sing in person! Please keep us posted on your plans/obligations as the dates draw nearer. Margaret

The conference I'm attending will be Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. I will arrive on Thursday and can either come a couple of days early or, preferably, stay until Tuesday night or Wednesday a.m. and try to hook up with some Mudcateers on Sunday or Monday night. If there's some centrally located place we might all rendezvous on Sunday night, that would be great.

As you can tell, I don't know the geography at all, so I'll have to rely on y'all to let me know what's in the neighborhood.
