Subject: Montreal, June 2-6 From: Peter Kasin Date: 10 Mar 02 - 01:29 AM I'll be staying with friends in Montreal June 2-6, before heading for a day in Boston, then the Mystic sea music festival. Montreal will be new to me. My friends will show me some of the Montreal traditional music scene, but I will, as ever when I travel, be seeking out the offbeat museum, weird sight, and archictectural beauties and interesting city walks. Any suggestions much appreciated. -chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: gnu Date: 10 Mar 02 - 06:51 AM Offbeat museum, weird sight and architectural beauties might all be found on St. Catherine's Street anytime of day, but mostly from 9PM to 4AM. |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: Peter Kasin Date: 11 Mar 02 - 04:12 AM Thanks for the tips, gnu and Beer! I'm curious about St. Catherine's Street, gnu. What's there? |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: gnu Date: 11 Mar 02 - 05:16 AM It's the "adult area", or so I have heard. My joke was vague... I saw "architectural beauties" as, perhaps, "brick shithouses". |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 11 Mar 02 - 09:16 AM St. Catherine Street is a very long street that stretches from Lower Westmount (where I live, just half a block up from St. Catherine) through downtown Montreal and far into the east end. It is Montreal's main shopping and entertainment street in the downtown area, kind of like Yonge Street in Toronto. Like Yonge Street, as it goes through various parts of town, it ranges from upscale to seedy. If you are a non-smoker, beware of Hurley's (on Crescent Street, just half a block down from St. Catherine). Your tolerance level may be different than mine, but the thickness of the smoke there makes it virtually impossible for me to go there. I have a live events calendar on the Folk Roots/Folk Branches website. So far, nothing is listed for June 2-6, but new information is added as it's sent to me. You might want to have a look as the time gets closer. Mike Regenstreif |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: Peter Kasin Date: 11 Mar 02 - 11:30 PM Thanks for the link, Mike. I'll check back when it gets closer. Gnu, I can see how "architectural beauties" could be interepreted more than one way! I'm a camera nut and when I visit a city, my favorite tourist activity is walking the streets for hours, days, photographing interesting buildings, storefronts, wall art and graffiti, old signs, strange sights, etc. |

Subject: RE: Montreal, June 2-6 From: ollaimh Date: 12 Mar 02 - 12:15 AM montreal has a lot of beautiful parts. the old city id like going to europe, just go south on st laurent and hang a left and you will hit it. st laurant is also an interesting area. i rarely miss the old jewish eateries on "the main" as st laurant is called. the main deli or schwartz"s have great smoked meat and many other goddies very cheap. these are walking distance from the old city. there used to be five sessions in montreal but i'm out of touch. some are doing quebecois music so the tunes may be dfferent to most, but the fiddle music is great. papizian had a greqat session on st. laurent but i hear he moved to nova scotia. i find st joeseph's oratory to be one of the most impressive churches in north america, and in a smaller way so is notre dame in old montreal--if you are into churches. my cousin used to be in a cajan band there but he last said that the scene was not busy. there are a slew of great hurdy gurdy palyers in montreal so you might search that on the net for montreal. daniel thineau(sp?) lives near by and he's great. other than that i usually visit friends but there must be more cool stuff other than the strip bars. most all of this stuff is within walking distance--including china town between the main area and old montreal. so good luck |
