I beseech thee, post the full words. It reminds me of a rather drunken night in 93 or 94 when I left the Shipwrights in the early morning and had to take the " Maria Llewellyn " out on the ebb in thick fog, to catch the Morning tide back through the Swale. It was interesting Navigation, particullally as I was not entirely sober. Gareth

And it's Jim, Dick & Ben A boy and two men Were lost from Pegwell Bay From Broadstairs up to Whitstable, several more did go astray Their oyster boats, their wherries, a yachtsman and his dog They lost their way that misty day In battle with the fog. And there's more where that came from. Thanks for the bungyrye, goes down a treat sung to Blow The man Down. Subject: RE: BS: MC TAVERN AT SEA - STILL From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Mar 02 - 04:13 PM Just a little story to keep us entertained while we're sailing in circles. One of my most memorable trips was with a friend who had a 26' Friendship Sloop, who invited me and my wife to sail with him up and down one of those long bays that you find in midcaost Maine. When he mentioned that the name of his sloop was the "Raven" I might have excercised more caution but Phil was an experienced skipper, and famous for his skill at problem-solving. Phil loved problems, things that wouldn't work, permitting him to take them apart and reassemble them in more logical order - and then they would invariably work. So I wasn't too worried. I had also done some sailing, knew one end of the boat from the other, and generally feel comfortable aboard such boats. Judy is more of a novice but we both felt that she would gain some much needed confidence by mentoring with Phil. Well, we managed to cast off and sail down the bay without too much anxiety, and the breeze was not too fierce. We had to tack back, giving Judy much valuable experience in steering and getting a feel for how the sails related to wind direction. Well, on one of our tacks we were making for a rocky point, and I expressed some concern that rocky points in Maine sometimes extend out under the water. Phil thought we'd have plenty of clearance as he pointed out how the wind indicator on the top of the mast related to the flapping jib. Judy was staring at the wind indicator when the depth gauge alarm sounded, and Phil shouted hard-starboard, which is not useful to shout at someone who has difficulty telling right from left. I got a great view of the ledge coming up fast as Phil grabbed the tiller and shoved it hard over but not quickly enough to prevent the sloop from grounding halfway across the ledge, with a rapidly falling tide. We tried rocking the boat. We then climbed into the dingy and tried pulling her one way or the other; she wouldn't budge. She then began to tilt over at an alarming rate as the tide continued to drop. Well, there was nothing to do but temporarily abondon ship, row across the cove to the neighbring yacht club which conveniently enough was having a family day celebration, and Phil being a member, he was able to persuade them to fed us as guests. No one noticed the Raven across the cove perched on the ledge, much to Phil's relief, and afterwards the tide did return and we menaged to float off the ledge and return safely home. Judy's comment as we drove home: "Nevermore!" at least not with Captain Phil. |

Subject: RE: BS: MC TAVERN AT SEA - STILL From: Lonesome EJ Date: 20 Mar 02 - 04:47 PM You know, all this reminds me of my dream to play the uillean harp while cruising the open sea on a Chinese junk. I attempted this while on a trip to Hong Kong, but found that the sea air was playing havoc with the instrument, so much so that the wood developed a split. To moisturize and protect the harp, I placed it in a large vat of lard. On returning to the dock and preoccupied with other matters, I forgot the harp. It was only on my return to the States that I remembered my harp. I commemorated the entire affair in a song I wrote, entitled I Left my Harp in Sampan Crisco.

Subject: RE: BS: MC TAVERN AT SEA - STILL From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Mar 02 - 06:53 AM Especially for Charley: The Yarn of the 'Nancy Bell' by W.S. Gilbert 'Twas on the shores that round our coast From Deal to Ramsgate span, That I found alone on a piece of stone An elderly naval man. His hair was weedy, his beard was long, And weedy and long was he, And I heard this wight on the shore recite, In a singular minor key: "Oh, I am a cook and a captain bold, And the mate of the Nancy brig, And a bo'sun tight, and a midshipmite, And the crew of the captain's gig." And he shook his fists and he tore his hair, Till I really felt afraid, For I couldn't help thinking the man had been drinking, And so I simply said: "O, elderly man, it's little I know Of the duties of men of the sea, But I'll eat my hand if I understand How you can possibly be "At once a cook, and a captain bold, And the mate of the Nancy brig, And a bo'sun tight, and a midshipmite, And the crew of the captain's gig." Then he gave a hitch to his trousers, which Is a trick all seamen larn, And having got rid of a thumping quid, He spun this painful yarn: "'Twas in the good ship Nancy Bell That we sailed to the Indian sea, And there on a reef we come to grief, Which has often occurred to me. "And pretty nigh all o' the crew was drowned (There was seventy-seven o' soul), And only ten of the Nancy's men Said 'Here!' to the muster-roll. "There was me and the cook and the captain bold, And the mate of the Nancy brig And the bo'sun tight, and a midshipmite, And the crew of the captain's gig. "For a month we'd neither wittles nor drink, Till a-hungry we did feel, So we drawed a lot, and accordin' shot The captain for our meal. "The next lot fell to the Nancy's mate, And a delicate dish he made; Then our appetite with the midshipmite We seven survivors stayed. "And then we murdered the bo'sun tight, And he much resembled pig, Then we wittled free, did the cook and me, On the crew of the captain's gig. "Then only the cook and me was left, And the delicate question, 'Which Of us two goes to the kettle?' arose And we argued it out as sich. "For I Ioved that cook as a brother, I did, And the cook he worshipped me; But we'd both be blowed if we'd either be stowed In the other chap's hold, you see. "'I'll be eat if you dines off me,' says Tom, 'Yes, that,' says I, 'you'll be,' -- 'I'm boiled if I die, my friend,' quoth I, And 'Exactly so,' quoth he. "Says he, 'Dear James, to murder me Were a foolish thing to do, For don't you see that you can't cook me, While I can -- and will -- cook you!' "So he boils the water, and takes the salt And the pepper in portions true (Which he never forgot) and some chopped shalot, And some sage and parsley too. "'Come here,' says he, with a proper pride, Which his smiling features tell, 'Twill soothing be if I let you see, How extremely nice you'll smell.' "And he stirred it round and round and round, And he sniffed at the foaming froth; When I ups with his heels, and smothers his squeals In the scum of the boiling broth. "And I eat that cook in a week or less, And -- as I eating be The last of his chops, why, I almost drops, For a wessel in sight I see! "And I never grin, and I never smile, And I never larf nor play, But I sit and croak, and a single joke I have -- which is to say: "Oh, I am a cook and a captain bold, And the mate of the Nancy brig, And a bo'sun tight, and a midshipmite, And the crew of the captain's gig!" (I sing a cutdown version to my own tune)

When we had finished our dinner, boys, the wind began to blow.

To every two men that graduates, I'll give one outfit free,

Subject: RE: BS: MC TAVERN AT SEA - STILL From: Amos Date: 11 Mar 02 - 01:29 PM LOL!! Staeady her there!! Capting Morse desires all hands to be well read, so we're lining up here, ladies to the left, dangly bitters to the right, for close reading. Morty!! Scramble down here and close-read the line on the right, then join the line on the left. I seem to be the only one who brought his specs along, so I'll take care of close-reading the curvy ones because it is much trickier. Takes an old hand, doncha know... We're also accepting applications for an Icon of the Month for the Temple of the Golden Globes, if anyone dares try to pass the physical. And the winner gets a free trip to Maidenhead. Assuming she qualifies...although the Board has advised me they are willing to lower the ..um..wire on otherwise promising candidates, depending on what they're promising... |
