Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Mickey191 Date: 21 Mar 02 - 03:20 AM Afterthought:It was better to die neath an Irish sky Then at Suvla or Su Del Bar (sp?) For had they died at Pearces side, or fought with Valera* true. Their graves we'd keep where the Finians sleep, in the shroud of the Foggy Dew. *Valera's name is no longer sung- it's been replaced with another patriot. (Can't come up with it) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Paddy Plastique Date: 21 Mar 02 - 03:53 AM 'Cathal Brugha', Mickey (pron. Caw-hal Broo-a). Shocked to find it ever mentioned Dev... Then again, it was written by a priest :-> |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Susanne (skw) Date: 21 Mar 02 - 05:44 PM Paddy, I think Cathal Brugha was the original name, Dev being a later substitution. Brugha died (fighting) in 1921 or 1922. Also, his name fits the song perfectly, whereas Dev's had to be lengthened to 'De Valera true'. Don't blame the priests for everything! :-))) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: GUEST,Harley-Friend Date: 22 Mar 02 - 04:48 PM Suvla Bay is well reknown as a fake-attack. The Brits won't sent their own soldiers to hell for nothing. So the Australian, Irish and New-Zealanders must die. It was a slaughtering. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Mickey191 Date: 23 Mar 02 - 01:40 AM Guest Harley-Friend, My Dad used to say it was Churchill's job to pick which regiments were sent for this slaughter- and that an inordinate amount of young Irishmen were chosen. Another way to deal with the "Irish Problem." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Bob Bolton Date: 23 Mar 02 - 06:59 AM G'day Mick, BJ and all, As I understand it, the really important area for Australia/New Zealand (ANZACs) was Gallipoli ... and Suvla Bay was very much a British Army action and didn't affect the Australia New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) so much. So why do we have such a heartfelt song about Suvla Bay? Who knows? A lot of Australians (like my Grandfather Bolton) were in the ANZAC only because they had come to Australia a few years before. Then again, a very large lot would have reacted against Churchill's convenient exterminations of troublesome Irish (as would the Quinns, on my mother's family side). The song can lead to all sorts of history. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Tam the bam fraeSaltcoatsScotland Date: 24 Mar 02 - 06:21 AM The british have done this sort of thing before, I'm talking about Earl Haig and his Pals, who just sent in thousands and thousands of young men to their death. While he and his pals were over here in comfort, the young men as I say were getting slaughterd.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: sulva bay From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Mar 02 - 09:18 AM I noticed some inconsistency in spelling. Google gives 960 hits on "Suvla Bay" and 172 hits on "Sulva Bay" – certainly enough to mislead the unwary. The Columbia Encyclopedia mentions "Suvla" but not "Sulva." That's enough to convince me "Suvla" is right and "Sulva" is a misspelling. |
