Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Mar 98 - 08:31 PM Bill, can you give us a few more words or think of somebody who recorded it? It's floating around in my head, and maybe a couple more phrases will draw it our or remind me where to look at it. My mental database search engine is a bit less efficient than the Mudcat database. This might be the song you're thinking of, but it's not what's floating in my brain. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: S.P. Buck Mulligan Date: 31 Mar 98 - 09:30 PM Ronnie Gilbert recorded this tune; at some point she may also have recorded it with Holly Near - who also probably recorded it on her own. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS, WIVES (Judy Small) From: rich r Date: 31 Mar 98 - 11:08 PM MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS, WIVES Words and music by Judy Small As recorded by Judy Small on "Ladies and Gems" (1984) CHORUS: The first time it was fathers; the last time it was sons, And in between your husbands marched away with guns and drums, And you never thought to question; you just went on with your lives, 'Cause all they'd taught you who to be was mothers, daughters, wives. You can only just remember, the tears your mothers shed As the sat and read their papers through the lists and lists of dead, And the gold frames held the photographs that mothers kissed each night, And the doorframes held the shocked and silent strangers from the fight. CHORUS And it was 21 years later with children of your own The trumpet sounded once again and the soldier boys were gone And you drove their trucks and made their guns and tended to their wounds And at night you kissed their photographs and prayed for safe returns. And after it was over, you had to learn again To be just wives and mothers when you'd done the work of men So you worked to help the needy and you never trod on toes And the photos on the pianos struck a happy family pose. CHORUS And then your daughters grew to women and your little boys to men And you prayed that you were dreaming when the call-up came again But you proudly smiled and held your tears as they bravely waved goodbye And the photos on the mantelpieces always made you cry. And now you're getting older and in time the photos fade And in widowhood you sit back and reflect on the parade Of the passing of your memories as your daughters change their lives Seeing more to our existence than just mothers, daughters, wives. CHORUS And you believed them. Printed in Rise Up Singing Recorded by Judy Small, Priscilla Herdman, and Ronnie Gilbert. rich r Click to play.Added to the Digital Tradition October 1999. |

Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Apr 98 - 01:00 AM OK, I gotta ask, Alan. First Fleet? I can guess from the context, but what's the official definition and history? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: Alan of Australia Date: 01 Apr 98 - 01:34 AM G'day, The first fleet was the fleet of 11 British ships under the command of Captain (then Governor) Arthur Phillip which sailed into Botany Bay on 26 January 1788. Many Australians proudly trace their ancestry to transportees of the first and subsequent fleets. Many were transported for trivial crimes. Cheers, |

Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: cobber Date: 27 Nov 03 - 11:35 PM Judy Small is not as well known as some other Aussie folk song writers but to my mind there are none better. When I first heard the song she ended it "and we believed them" but when she toured Australia with Ronnie Gilbert ten or so years back, they did it as a duet and finished with a last line of "but we are learning". I thought that was a nice touch. She doesn't tour much these days, though I saw her a few months ago in Adelaide and she was as great as ever. Don't miss it if you get a chance to see her. |
Subject: RE: Lyr: Mothers, daughters, wives From: Helen Date: 29 Nov 03 - 04:16 PM I totally agree, Cobber. One of the best live performers I have seen, and a very talented musician & songwriter. Also an ambassador for gay and lesbian culture. Judy Small Web Site Helen |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mothers, Daughters, Wives (Judy Small From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 03 Feb 08 - 07:57 PM It's very strange to see being a descendant of a First Fleet arrival likened to the D. A. R. Those who arrived on the First Fleet were convicts, transported to a penal colony. For most of Australian history, this was considered to be a stain, something to be hidden, not something to be proud of. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mothers, Daughters, Wives (Judy Small From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 03 Feb 08 - 11:47 PM it was amazing what lengths some convicts & many of their children/grandchildren went to hide the convict "stain", and a few generations later THEIR descendants shout it from the rooftops! sandra |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mothers, Daughters, Wives (Judy Small) From: Bob Bolton Date: 03 Feb 08 - 11:51 PM G'day Gerry, Well ... there were also a bunch of the usual invasion troops and officers - and many of those did well out here ... beyond the tiresome reach of civil laws. Many ot their progeny might see themselves in terms closer to the DAR ... but Australians who have compared the achievements of both sides of the ledger - especially in terms of benefit for the modern society - would be very happy to be descended from the First Fleet convicts. My earliest known arrivals to Australia were free settlers ... but 'economic refugees' ... a bit before the Irish Famine. However, at least one of those fed her rebellious views on British rule to her family ... in ways that still resound in our folk memory. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mothers, Daughters, Wives (Judy Small) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 10 Mar 19 - 08:55 AM Bill (Scotland) asked; "Can anyone help me find the lyrics for the great anti-war song "Mothers, daughters, wives"?" But I'd say that this song is about women's place and voice in society. In the UK, there were conflicting views. The Suffragettes certainly did not agree with the pacifists. Emmeline and Christabel persuaded the WSPU to stop their suffrage activities until the war was over. The Suffragette, renamed Britannia, matched the popular press in its support for the war. And the WSPU, now calling itself the Women's Party, campaigned for compulsory national service for women. |
