Subject: Things that should be shared From: Louie Roy Date: 26 Mar 02 - 12:59 PM Before your wallet or purse is lost or stolen here are some things you can do.Place all of the cards in your wallet or purse on your scanner or a proto copier and copy both sides that way you will know exactly what was in your wallet and store in a safe place.Next cancel all your credit cards immediately and notify the police in the area the incident happened this proves to credit provider that you were dilegent and is a first step in an investigation and it also notifys the DMV that your driver license has been lost or stolen.Perhaps the most important step and generally forgotten you need to call the three national credit reporting organizations and the Social Security Adminisatration to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number. This will keep the thief or the person who locates your wallet from applying for credit in your name or getting a duplicate of your social security number. The phone numbers to call Equifax 1 800 525 6285 Experian (formerly TRW) 1 888 397 3742 Trans Union 1 800 680 7289 Social Security Administration Fraud Line 1 800 269 0271 Louie Roy |

Subject: RE: Things that should be shared From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Mar 02 - 01:25 PM The thing to do is to subscribe to one of the agencies that you can gve details of the cards in advance, and then, if they go missing, you just phone them up. One phone call, and you are covered. (And if you've got some card where a phone call doesn't mean that as soon as you inform them no further charges can be made agains tyour account, you should promptly switch to a better credit card provider.)
Mind, this can backfire on you. I remember on a trip to Prague a friend thought she had had her wallet stolen, and made the cancel-everything call. Then she found her wallet, and had no way of cancelling the cancellation, and was completely without any kind of card until herc holiday was over. |

Subject: RE: Things that should be shared From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Mar 02 - 01:47 PM The predicament described by McGrath almost happened to me, too, but in my case, my wallet really was stolen. It almost seemed we were stranded in a foreign country with no source of money. Then we remembered my wife was carrying a bank card that I didn't have, and therefore didn't need to cancel. It was the account she normally uses only for her music-related income and expenses. We were able to call our bank and have them transfer enough money into that account so we could finish our trip. From now on, when we travel, we will make a point of carrying cards on different accounts. If the cards are on one account, you can't cancel one card without canceling them both. |
