In fact, the entire movie "Johnny Tremaine" is up on Youtube in 10 minute segments, not only the clip containing the song.

There's an article in Wikipedia about the term Sons of Liberty.

Back on 01 Apr 97 - 10:56 PM, Jerry Friedman, jfriedman@nnm.cc.nm.us, asked if this was about the song from the Disney movie Johnny Tremaine. I will admit that that's also the song I think of when I hear the title "Sons of Liberty". Apparently, that song is actually called "The Liberty Tree", and the lyrics were given in this thread. In that thread, Rabbi Sol points out that a clip from the movie, featuring the song, may be found on YouTube.

And a fine job you do on this song, too, Mick.

Steve,

I know exactly what you mean. I decided long ago to do this song, after hearing Dan's version. Jed Marum, mentioned above, has done a wonderful version also. He treats the song with the respect it deserves. It is a treasure, and when I sing it to other brothers and sisters, they get it immediately.

Proud to say that I know both of these gents.

And you.

Mick

Sons of Liberty

Fare thee well sweet Ireland, whom I may see no more,
My heart is almost bleeding to leave my native shore.
The King he has commanded that we must sail away
To fight the Sons of Liberty in North Amerikee(Amerikay).

Twas the second of November, at the dawning of the day
The Irish heros landed being anchored in the bay.
From New York up to King's Bridge we boldly marched away.
To fight our own relations in North Amerikee.

Ah Molly dear ol Molly, mind what is written here.
When that you do read this you can't but shed a tear.
As I relate my story twill grieve your heart full sore(soul)
When I tell you of our misery since we left our native shore.

We marched with resolution to face the rebel crew.
And boldly we attacked them tho' men we had but few.
They put on their grapeshot which cut our men away
With the sword they showed no quarter in North Amerikee

Through fields of blood we waded where the cannons loud did roar.
And many a gallant soldier lay bleeding in his gore.
And many's a good commander twas on the field did lay
That twas either killed or wounded by the Sons of Liberty.

T'would grieve your heart with pity to have seen the soldier's wives
Lamenting for their husbands and their melancholy cries.
And the children crying, "Mother we surely will rue the day
That we came to lose our father dear in North Amerikee."

The original song is in the digitrad and was part of a collection of English Folk Songs in the Southern Appalachians. Collected from Mrs Townley, Pineville, KY 1917.

The Irish fought on both sides of the revolution. I personally like this song as it expressed my own feelings of boarding a ship in 1965 and watching San Diego disappear behind the horizon. And nothing but water and war laying ahead. All of the Veterans who have heard this song get real quiet at the memories it brings back. It took me a while to be able to sing it.

Posted with the utmost of respect and Love for those who have shed their blood for their cause.

Late response to Steve:

I've similar problems with 'McNally's row of flats' on that great CD, but a lot of help is here.

Too bad, the lyrics there cannot be 'transported' over here readily.

THE SONS OF LIBERTY

Fare you well sweet Ireland whom I shall see no more
My heart is almost bleeding to leave my native shore
The king he has commanded that we shall sail away
To fight the Sons of Liberty in North Americay

'Twas the second of November at the dawning of the day
The Irish heroes landed being anchored in the bay
From New York up to Kings Bridge we boldly marched away
To fight our own relations in North Americay

Oh, Molly, dear, oh Molly, mind what is written here
And when that you do read, you can but shed a tear
As I relate my story 'twill grieve your heart full sore
When I tell you of our misery since we left our native shore

We marched with resolution to face the rebel crew
And boldly we attacked them though men we had but few
They poured on their grape-shot which cut our men away
With the sword they showed no quarter in North Americay

Through fields of blood we waded where cannons loud did roar
And many a gallant soldier lay bleeding in his gore
And many a brave commander it's on the field did lay
That were both killed and wounded by the Sons of Liberty

Your hearts would melt with pity to have seen the soldiers' wives
Lamenting for their husbands and the melancholy cries
And children crying, "Mother, we surely rue the day
When we came to lose our father dear in North Americay."

"The Sons of Liberty" is a combined text from a couple of sources. I might have sung the words slightly differently the day we recorded the song but the above was what I intended to sing. I composed the melody.

All the best,
Dan

It's in the digitrad - but the words I'd like are the ones off of the "Irish in America" album as performed by Dan Milner and Bob Conroy.

Thanks - Steve

Is this the "Sons of Liberty" that appears in the movie of _Johnny Tremaine_? We're talking about highlights of sixth grade here--both the book and the movie.

The Sons of Liberty were the revolutionists who wished to secede from England. Led by pinko Commy types like Sam Adams, John Hancock and G. Washington.

Does anyone know the background of this song? Basically the Irish soldiers are taken to fight "the sons of liberty" in North America. But who are the sons of liberty?
Thanks
