Back on 01 Apr 97 - 10:56 PM, Jerry Friedman, [e-mail], asked if this was about the song from the Disney movie Johnny Tremaine. I will admit that that's also the song I think of when I hear the title "Sons of Liberty". Apparently, that song is actually called "The Liberty Tree", and the lyrics were given in this thread. In that thread, Rabbi Sol points out that a clip from the movie, featuring the song, may be found on YouTube.

I know exactly what you mean. I decided long ago to do this song, after hearing Dan's version. Jed Marum, mentioned above, has done a wonderful version also. He treats the song with the respect it deserves. It is a treasure, and when I sing it to other brothers and sisters, they get it immediately.

The original song is in the digitrad and was part of a collection of English Folk Songs in the Southern Appalachians. Collected from Mrs Townley, Pineville, KY 1917.

The Irish fought on both sides of the revolution. I personally like this song as it expressed my own feelings of boarding a ship in 1965 and watching San Diego disappear behind the horizon. And nothing but water and war laying ahead. All of the Veterans who have heard this song get real quiet at the memories it brings back. It took me a while to be able to sing it.

"The Sons of Liberty" is a combined text from a couple of sources. I might have sung the words slightly differently the day we recorded the song but the above was what I intended to sing. I composed the melody.
