Subject: Folk Music Radio Stations From: GUEST,GaryD Date: 30 Mar 02 - 09:33 PM Now that I have a computer that can receive music online, I'm wondering if there are any folk music stations that I can listen to..Programs would be nice, but are there any full-time folk stations out there, too? Thanks.. Gary |

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: 53 Date: 30 Mar 02 - 10:27 PM I have never heard of any of those. We have a nice oldie station where I live and that's about as close to folk as I can get. Bob |

Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: catspaw49 Date: 30 Mar 02 - 10:54 PM Hey....No problem!!! And BOB53.....The specific post that you should check is THIS ONE. Jim Dixon has a very comprehensive list there of stations that webcast and many of the shows are excellent. Several 'Catters have shows. Mike Regenstreif in Montreal does an absolutely fantastic program as does Ron Loesko and bot often post here about upcoming special shows. Rick Fielding has a show out of CIUT Toronto on Mondays at 7 that's laid back, live with folks in the studio and worht a listen too. If your computer does sound and you have Real Player (free) then you're set to go. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: Mark Cohen Date: 30 Mar 02 - 11:03 PM My favorite for now is FolkScene, which apparently was a folk radio program in L.A. for 20 years or so and now is available as streaming MPEG or RealAudio all the time. It's a wonderful mix of traditional and newer folk-oriented music with lots of live in-studio presentations. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: GUEST,BDtheQB Date: 31 Mar 02 - 09:53 AM www.grassyhill.org or even spinner.com have folk 24/7 with only a few "commercials" per day. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: John Hindsill Date: 31 Mar 02 - 12:11 PM Folk Scene, referenced by Mark Cohen above, is returning to its radio home after a year and a half absence. Beginning April 7, Folk Scene will be back at KPFK 90.7 fm [www.kpfk.org]in Los Angeles Sundays 7pm to 10pm (pt). But no good news comes without concomitant bad news; the program that replaced F.S., Alive and Pickin', is going off the air. Too bad that both could not be on the air. John |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: GUEST,Snowy Date: 31 Mar 02 - 02:14 PM Try the Eagle's Whistle programme on KAZU a public radio station in California. Sunday nights at 7pm GMT (8pm summer time) Just search for KAZU and follow the links Snowy |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: Mr Red Date: 31 Mar 02 - 06:17 PM Here in the UK the closest we get is Classic FM. They have their love affirs with Ashokan Farewell and Das Sprachan Licht (scuse spellings) and they do like their Vaughan Williams. Occasionally you can hear Butterworth et al. And Radio 4 does pretty well for a talk based channel but other than that most local BBC stations broadcast a local (ish) prog either from their base or networked over several stations. My experience of listeners to local stations is that there are a lot of listeners who listen rather than go to local sessions. I suspect they are more likely to be found at the concert venues if anywhere. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: GUEST,GaryD Date: 31 Mar 02 - 10:48 PM What a wealth of info, here!..Thanks again..I'm here in Minnesota, & we of course have the MN public radio show, prairie home companion with Garrison Keillor, but to tell the truth, since he's become nationally famous, I'm afraid that most of the musicians I hear there these days are the "slick" professionals. Not that they aren't good, but I do miss the musicians who are not as polished, and mainly play for the music, & not the bucks...! I also believe that when many of the musicians get "discovered", they find a pattern or niche, & their creativity & experimentation suffers.. |
Subject: RE: Help: Folk Music Radio Stations From: Mark Cohen Date: 31 Mar 02 - 11:25 PM Gary, I saw Garrison's show in St. Paul in 1982, just when he was beginning to be discovered. I was moving from Philadelphia to Portland at the time. It was on the lawn outside the Art Museum, and he had Claudia Schmidt and I don't recall who else, and it was a wonderful experience. It's true, it's not what it was...but what is? Glad to hear FolkScene is going back on the air...I hope they're going to stay online, too, since it's a little tough for me to pick up L.A. radio stations. Aloha, Mark |
