I have a computer-illiterate friend who's searching for a transliteration of a song which sounds like "Shabaz Kalender." It comes from Pakistan and is either in the Urdu language or in Old Persian. It may be a Sufi song.

If you know the words or know where I can get them, please let me know. (I've tried a few searches on the Internet, but to no avail.)

Leenia, I may have found it---spelled Shahbaz Qalander. Look at this page. It's a discography of an Urdu musician. Titles are alpha, so it's way down on the page.

Thank you, Sorcha. The proper spelling has helped. So far have found two songs which may be it, but one is very short - could be a chant which is repeated again and again. It starts "O lal muhinji pat rakijain..." Does anybody recognize this as a short chant?

The other starts out "lal meri pat rekhio bala" and it may be the refrain of a song with other verses. Does anybody know anything more about this song?

I have now learned that Shabaz Qalander was a Sufi saint and that his shrine is an important place in Pakistan.

There's a song "Shahbaz Qalander Lal" HERE (listed under "Qawwali"). Recorded more than 19 minutes, but no lyrics given.

thank you, Masato. Actually, I had found that site, but when I click on the song, my computer says the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

However, it is useful to learn that the song runs for 19 minutes. I believe it is a chant or ritualistic song, because few story-telling songs would be that long.

I listened to it, it is great--it is Sufi music, and, while it is ritual music, it is for dancing, and it really does rock out--I believe that the artist is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who was a bit controversial because he often mixed classical music forms with more contemporary and western sounds--I don't know enough about it to tell whether this piece would be considered more traditional or modern, but it is worth a listen!

You might already know this, but the more usual spelling of 'Qalander' is 'Qalandar.' Hope that helps. :)

Yes, Lepus, I agree that it would help if I spelled it right.

Meanwhile, does anybody know anything about illegal musical operations which cause a program to be shut down? I have a Sound Blaster sound card and Real Player, so why won't the tune play?

Oriental Star Agencies song search returned 19 CDs containing "Shahbaz Qalander". Only one with "Shahbaz Qalandar" in the title ("Sindhari Da Shahbaz Qalandar").

M.Ted is right. The singer of "Shahbaz Qalander" I linked to above is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The same RealPlayer recording, with a lot of other Urdu Qawwali songs, is HERE (The spelling is "Shahbaz Qalandar Laal").

It must be that different people have different ideas for how to transliterate the syllable, and there is no standardized spelling.

My friend is coming for dinner tomorrow, and we'll see if what I have found so far is enough. We are going to have turkey mole and cornbread.

You may not be doing anything wrong--I keep getting a window from these links that says the server is full, which is to say more people are trying to access it than it can handle, that is probably what is happening to you too--
