I was wondering as I ran around the house this morning, setting all the clocks ahead, if anyone had ever penned a song about daylight savings time? Along with that are some other questions like: Are we the only nation that DOES this? Is there really any reason to DO this?

As a footnote:

It is only in the Spring, when we "lose" an hour that I get to grousing about daylight savings time, I never seem to be too ceoncerned in the fall when we "gain" that hour back.

Don't know any songs about Daylight Saving Time, but my mother used to sing:

There ought to be a Moonlight Saving Time,
So I could kiss that gal of mine
Until the birdies wake and sing,
"Good morning!"

That's absolutely all I can remember of it, thank God.

Well, I posted this a while back, but like to never have found it again. So, since you specifically asked for songs about Daylight savings time, I'll post it again.

Simani (Sim Savoury and Bud Davidge of Newfoundland) has a pretty good commentary on the situation.

Double Daylight Savings Time

Uncle Tom's watch used to shine in the dark
But he gave her a weegie out over the wharf
Don't need her now boys, Uncle Tom said
Since the new daylight savings time scheme was brought in

Who thought it up boys, God love his heart
Tis wonderful seeings our summers so short
With twice as much sunshine, Oh Lord, bless us all
I low we'll be burned up as black as the coal

Double your pleasure, double your fun
For half of the year, we'll have double the sun

The man down at U. I. was scratching his head
Get some funny letters here lately he said
Like if I had enough double daylight punched in
Do you think that me five weeks could pass off for ten

Me grandfather's just about 90 years old
He can't seem to get what is happening you know
All his life he's been up at the crackin' of dawn
Now dawnin' don't crack 'til the day's almost gone

A frisky young feller who lives up the bay
He now hauls his lobster pots twice every day
And got plenty of time when his fishing is through
To burn up some pork chops on his gas barbeque

Double your pleasure, double your fun
For half of the year, we'll have double the sun

Some says it's bad while others says good
Savings on kerosene, shocking on wood
And mothers who can't get their youngsters to bed
Can't sleep cause they got too much light in their head

But supposin' we lived where the sun never sets
Where half of the year the lamp's never lit
So make like the Eskimos living up North
Pull down your blind and your igloo goes dark

Double your pleasure, double your fun
For half of the year, we'll have double the sun
With double the daylight, we'll double the fun.

Sandy, I have a song about Moonlight Savings Time ~~ somewhere. I will try to think to look it up.

Yes, I remember the Moonlight Savings Time song but I can't recall who I heard sing it! A ukelele certainly sounds like it would be the right instrument.

Thanks for the Double Daylight Savings Time song Dale, it appears that some other countries use it too if I understand the reference to Newfoundland.

Anyone know if the practice is limited to the Northern half of the Western hemisphere or not?

When I was a boy in Wisconsin, the dairy farmers were all agin it. Said that the cows were ready to give milk when they were ready to give milk and fooling around with the clocks wasn't going to do anything but confuse the issue. As a result Wisconsin didn't have DST while Illinois (at least Chicago) did, made for some confusion, you bet. That was back in the days when colored margarine was illegal in Wisconsin and trucks full of the colored stuff (in quarters, just like BUTTER) would be parked just over the Wisconsin/Illinois line, doing a brisk business.

I worked for a wheat farmer in western Kansas in 1944 who would invariably respond, when asked what time it was: "Roosevelt time, or Godamighty time?"

Google tells me that "(There Ought to be a) Moonlight Savings Time" was written in 1931 and sung by a whole bunch of people, from Rudy Vallee to Bing Crosby. I still can't remember any more of it.

Yes, CB, other places in the world besides the US push their clocks forward in the spring as well, but here in France it's even worse: we start out in winter with our clocks set an hour ahead of solar time already and then advance them yet another hour at the end of March until the end of October and are thus obliged to live TWO hours ahead of solar time for 7 months of the year.

Lyrics with chords to "Moonlight Savings Time" are on page 27 of this site: http://www.ircc.cc.fl.us/atircc/commout/planetarium/astsongbook.pdf

THERE OUGHT TO BE A MOONLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
by Kahahl and Richman

Birdies fly with new ambition, Spring is in their song!
Soon you'll find yourself a-wishin' days were not so long.
If my thought is not defined, listen while I speak my mind:

REFRAIN:
There ought to be a moonlight saving time,
So I could love that gal of mine,
Until the birdies wake and chime
Good morning!
There ought to be a law in clover time
To keep that moon out overtime
To keep each lover's lane in mind
'Til dawning.

You'd better hurry up, hurry up, Hurry up get busy today!
You'd better croon a tune, croon a tune, To the man up in the moon,
And here's what I'd say:

REFRAIN

Ah, there you go, Sharon! Now Sandy can sing the WHOLE thing again. The version I am familiar with was recorded by Annette Hanshaw. Thanks.

There was a thread just last week when Great Britain changed their clocks.

I think all of Western Europe does. I think in the past they did no all change at the same time; so while normally GtBr & France are an hour different there were times when there was 2 hours difference. I don't know if this is still the case, or if the EU countries all change the same time.

Here's a list for when DST is beginning & ending in various cities.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the musical references. I will try to learn the two songs about DST and I loved the MST song too. I found the Brit thread on their version of Spring Ahead. Its not unlike when we Westerners were panicking because of the millennium and all those OTHER people who don't have the Julian calendar were wondering WHAT we were going on about!
