Subject: RE: Lyr Req: One Dime Blues (Blind Lemon Jefferson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Jan 18 - 05:01 PM There is an East Cairo Street in Springfield, MO. However, this discussion at the Weenie Campbell website says that East 62nd Street in Chicago was once known as East Cairo Street, and argues that that was probably the street Jefferson was referring to. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: One Dime Blues From: GUEST,Joseph Scott Date: 25 Jan 17 - 01:01 AM "Other versions were recorded by Lead Belly and by Woody Guthrie. Etta Baker recorded an instrumental version." IIRC all versions of "One Dime Blues" as such go back to Lemon's hit record (despite the fact that e.g. Lead Belly was older than Lemon). |
Subject: Lyr Add: ONE DIME BLUES (Blind Lemon Jefferson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Jan 17 - 06:47 PM The version in the DT, although attributed to Blind Lemon Jefferson, is missing some of his verses: ONE DIME BLUES As recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson, 1927. I'm broke and I ain't got a dime. (3x) Ever'body gets this hard luck sometime. I was standing on East Cairo* Street one day. (3x) One dime was all I had. Mama, don't treat your daughter mean. (3x) That's the meanest woman a man most ever seen. You want your friend to be bad like Jesse James? (3x) Get two six-shooters, highway some passenger train. One dime was all I had. (3x) Tryin' to be a sportin' lad. I bought that Morning News. (3x) Then I bought a cigar too. * Pronounced kay-ro. Other versions were recorded by Lead Belly and by Woody Guthrie. Etta Baker recorded an instrumental version. |

Subject: RE: one dime blues From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 16 Apr 02 - 10:35 PM One Dime Blues is found in many versions and under several different titles. Blind Lemon Jefferson did it on record about 1928 as noted in the DT Mirror. There are many other versions. It was mentioned as among the oldest blues by many of the folklorists' informants. Traditionally it includes a verse about "I walked all the way to East St. Louis and I didn't have but one thin dime." Mance Lipscomb did this song too. Here's a tab of Mance's "One Thin Dime" One Thin Dime And a soundclip Texas Songster |
