Well, ABOFOTS (A Bit Of Folk On The Side) with Paul & Richenda is now long-gone, and even FSF (First Saturday Folk) with The Goodwills has now transmogrified into FBAB (Folk, Blues and Beyond), with new custodians.   

And The Wheel Turns ..... for Paul Lawler (aka Lawls, aka The Human Ge-Gnome) - has now passed over, due to the scourge that is cancer.

Today I posted an OBIT thread on The Cat for him.

Well, my comment on 22 Sept 2005 about not being able to imagine ABOFOTS still going in another 11 years has had its effects.

We celebrate our 9th Birthday this coming Saturday, October 2nd - and it is to be our Final night.
We're not too sad though, as we've had lotsa fun and met lotsa great people and done lotsa singing - and lotsa silly stuff too!
My partner and I just now need to have more "spare" time to pursue other creative ideas!

However, our place at the Up Front Club in Maleny is being taken up by another regular Folk happening : The First Saturday Folk night.
This will be run by The Goodwills (you may know them from Macca's "Australia All Over" fame) and starts November 6th.
HUZZAH!!!

i've been talking to a few people in the chat room who keep mentioing thinking about checking out Oz. So here is some more organised info on folk events in NSW and in Australia. It'll give you places to look and browse.

For info on folk events in NSW, try the NSW Folk Fed website, at folkfednsw.org.au. This site lets you know about festivals, clubs and happenings in NSW, and also links in to many other folk sites as well.   

Almost Acoustic is a folk venue in Rozelle run buy the Folk Federation of NSW. It features overseas, interstate and local artists. Folk nights at Almost Acoustic are usually the second Saturday of the month, but there are variations to fit in with touring artists. The Loaded Dog is another acoustic venue - showcasing the best acoustic music has to offer, from guitar to hurdy-gurdy, solo voice to community choir.

Apart from the folk scene, Australia is a beautiful country you might want to experience some of it. Here are a couple of sites to give you a feel for where else to think about going..

The Woodford folk festival is the biggest festival in oz – over 90,000 when I went. It is Queensland so is a good place to go b4 or after looking around Queensland. It is on every year between Christmas and New Year. It is not far from Maleny and the Glasshouse Mountains – a beautiful area of Australia to visit with scenic rainforest walks and a permaculture & alternative village nearby. This festival is more a world music to anything festival. It is extremely well planned and has showers, and bathrooms dotted regularly through the huge site, as well as village markets, camping and stalls. There are so many many venues within walking distance, the whole site is walkable and so well planned that there is no sense of it being overcrowded. New Years Eve can get a little frenetic but there is a wonderful ceremony that happens each year in a natural amphitheatre on site.

The National Folk Festival in Canberra is our best festival. It is all on the one circular site, with ample camping, good quality bathroom amenities on site, as well as village markets, camping and stalls. Everything is within walking distance, and here is the place to go to get a good feel for the folk scene in Australia. Folkies from all over the country come to perform and to share their music. There are four days of music workshops before the festival, the main part of the festival is over the Easter weekend (four days).

The St Albans folk festival is a beautiful little festival in a tiny historic village. Anyone coming for the National could hang around for the St Albans festival – its one of our best. They are both reachable from Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

This Australian girl is already spoken for and married to an alien! I love to say that. Perhaps we could adopt you Naemanson. We have some great scenery out here on the South-east coast and room for a visitor or two. Melbourne has some good music spots but is a bit fast for us. Our place is a nice spot to rest up and have quiet sessions. September to the end of the year is the best time to visit or earlier if you want to see baby whales. Joy

After I posted my last message I went for a bit of a surf through the Australian immigration sites. I was disappointed to learn I cannot retire to Australia and expect to live out my days there. A retirement visa only lasts four years and then has to be renewed every two years until they decide they've had enough of you.

I guess I'll have to marry an Australian and come in on a family visa. Any volunteers? Females only need apply.

The weird thing about Australia, is that in parts of Summer, the temperature in Brisbane can actually be cooler than in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide - ohhhh, who cares about Perth? :-)

Hi Brett.

I would suggest autumn or spring as good times around here - April will get you the National Folk Festival in Canberra (can be very cold at night), and St Albans Festival, just north of Sydney. Quite often, the weather in Sydney in Autumn and early winter (March - June) is the most stable, lots of pleasant sunny days, and not too hot.

September will get you Jamberoo Festival, down the south coast, only an hour and a half from Sydney. Temperatures are usually comfortable in spring (September - November) but as you found out, weather conditions can be unstable. These are my favourite three festivals, by the way.

The Weather Bureau site - bom.gov.au - gives ya the gen about our beautiful weather!! As a Maine lad you won't find Canberra or Melbourne very cold - there's no snow!! You need to go to the Snowy Mountains to see that white stuff.

fed.gov.au - for federal government sites, including several tourism bodies. Each State/Territory also has a tourism agency & you would get links to these agencies.

Ahem. There is in fact no right time for visiting the southern part of the Antipodean colony. And as far as Canberra is concerned, well...... too much likelihood of finding one of the deadliest specimens of the Australian reptilian lifeforms. Far, far beter to stick to the nice bit. Brisbane and environs are particularly pleasant at any time of the year... especially now the wet stuff seems to have shot through.

The Squeezebox Fest went so well that it is highly like to be repeated. They were raising funds for a local Hospice and could present a cheque for $1000.00.

A lovely country hall with the McLagan Winery 1 Km away.

A Traditional (Aussie) Country Dance went well past planned finishing time. Burgers and booze available. Wonderful weather. Plenty of shelter outside for sessions - unfortunately not too much of that occurred.

About 300 attended - about 2/3 of those were spectators only.

A few similar suggestion for "GFA" did get floated in the other ("Keirin Halpin") thread.

What I'm trying to get from Raggytash is a bigger sample of the song's lyrics, so that I can get a better feel for the general style, content and geographical spread of the song. The two references given are a thuosand miles apart north-south ... may the next reference is two thousand miles west ...? Without a clearer idea of the general feel of the song - and I don't have the record, or any link to a sound file - I'm really working in the dark!

Hey, Jo Peace mentioned delightful Mapleton - it's got the pub with the best view for miles. Highly recommended. Haven't been to any folkie dos there but I promise I will make the effort (I stay at Kureelpa when I'm up there, so it's only 5ks to Mapleton, a bit further to Maleny.

Ozmacca, you make the Celtic Tearooms sound really nice - the ad on the Folk Australia website made it sound like one of those rather twee and introspective sessions that frighten off the casual passer-by. I'll give it a whirl.

Would just to let you know of another Folk Club on the Blackall Ranges called the "Red Kettle Folk Club". This club was born about 6 years ago by the flamboyant and funny bush poet ,Jackie Bridle.Jackie having now moved away , the folk club is now run and hosted by Mark Gillett and Jo Peace. We gather at a small but friendly venue called "The Dangerous Deli" in the small but friendly town of "Mapleton". You will be guaranteed to enjoy some of the best music, poetry and comedy from around the traps . Mapleton is situated about 14kms West of Nambour , or approx 20k's North of Maleny. Ta muchly Re "ABOFOTS" at Melany. Drove past it once but didn't realise that Paul Lawler had anything to do with it. I was with CAFS Central Australian Folk Society when Paul and his brother Vinnie did a concert in 1972, and was a member of the Top End Folk Club while Paul was AWOL building a house and stuff.

We've been declared as stuck in the 6O's because we try to keep up the tradition to much country Queensland opposition.

Thanks rich-joy for that terrific piece of advertising for the nicest bit of Queensland - not that I'm biased you understand - and to continue.....

If you're up around the lovely Blackall Range near Maleny and it's Sunday, a great weekly session kicks off around 2.30pm in the Celtic Tearooms, on Mountain View Road, just a couple of km from Mary Cairnscross Park where you can see unparalleled view of the Glasshouse Mountains.

The Tearooms are run by a great couple of friendly folk and their willing staff of fairies.... check out the garden and you'll see what I mean... Stepping into the Tearoom is like stepping into one of the better Scottish pubs. Great atmosphere, BYO, top class lunches, snacks, devonshire teas or just coffee and cake.

The sessions go until around 5.00pm and the range is imncredible. Regulars include Hammer Dulcimer, Hurdy-Gurdy, Small Pipes, and we even let the occassional guitar and mandolin join in! Old-fashioned turn-about stuff with the musoes at the centre table. Gold coin donations are divided up among the musoes, and anybody and everybody is welcome.

There are also (fairly) regular monthly Staurday night concert events, featuring top local performers in an intimate atmosphere. Always good stuff and sometimes unusual for a folk venue. F'r instance - the midwinter Christmas in July - and August (due to popular demand) is a six-part baroque & renaissance group.

Rich-Joy, You may be a God send to me, I'm trying to learn asong by an Irish Singer/songwriter called Kieran Halpin. The song is named Roll you to the River.

The first verse goes

Theres a busfire south of Sydney, a heatwave in old Queensland, There's not much in the G.F.A. but a pile of rusty sand.

AS yet I cannot find out what the GFA is and I don't like to sinf songs without knowing the background, I don't think you can do them justice if you don't understand what the song contains. Can you explain GFA please

Loaded Dog Folk Club upstairs, Neighbourhood Centre 79 Johnston St ANNANDALE 4th Saturdays, 8pm (except December & January) Loaded Dog

The Dog is held in the old Town Hall - sandstone & wood with a 20 foot ceiling, its the best acoustic venue in Sydney. We're close to the city centre - either a short bus ride or an affordable taxi ride. Floor acts, main & support act & a great singing audience.

I also help run another club just down the road & a similarily short bus/taxi ride from the CBD - Almost Acoustic Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre Darling St, near Balmain side of Victoria Rd

Almost Acoustic is held every Saturday, the folk nights at Almost Acoustic are sponsored by the Folk Federation of NSW and are usually the second Saturday of the month, but there are variations to fit in with touring artists.

Mucatters travelling to Eastern Australia may like to consider visiting Brisbane, capital city of the SUNNY state of Queensland and where there has been a continuous thriving Folk scene since Forever. The brilliant annual Woodford Folk Festival is also nearby. Now about an hour and a half's drive NW of Brisbane, in dairy country ~ green rolling hills, with the unique Bunya Nut Pines, formerly rainforest ~ is the Sunshine Coast Hinterland town of Maleny, home to a thriving Arts community, numerous Co-Operatives (second only to Mondragon in Spain) AND : The home of the "A Bit Of FOLK On The Side" (ABOFOTS) Folk Club!!! (you knew there was a point to all this didn't you!!)

ABOFOTS evenings of FOLK performances are held at The Up Front Club, in Maple Street, Maleny on the First Saturday of Every Month. We started up 6 months ago and our initial trial period went so well, we feel confident of continuing. The format is basically Acoustic Music and Poetry ~ with Melody and Meaning, Harmony and Heart ~ for singing, playing, reading, or listening ~ and drawn from the fields of Folk / World / Folk-Blues / Gospel / Country-Folk / Bluegrass ~ both Traditional and Contemporary. Performers are welcomed from the floor and we would LOVE to meet visitors – whether performing or listening.

The evening is hosted by Paul Lawler, former Darwin and Sydney singer/songwriter (and founder member of the infamous, still-running Top End Folk Club of Darwin whose former home was a WWII Gun Turret!!) and who, with his partner, has been resident in Maleny for over 8 years.

Home of ABOFOTS, the Up Front Club is a Co-Operative Social Club run partly by a Volunteer system. It is a licensed venue, which also serves great Italian coffee plus its famous Dandelion Coffee and Chai, as well as meals and cakes. It runs 7 days and 3 nights per week with a variety of musical programmes. For the ABOFOTS Folk evenings, there is a $2 cover charge towards Club costs for the special evening.
