Subject: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: bill\sables Date: 27 Apr 02 - 11:59 AM Hi Sam Pirt here, not Bill I am borrowing his computer and his cookie!! Just wondered if there were any Nickelharpa players out there as I am thinking of starting to play it. Cheers, Sam |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: Lepus Rex Date: 27 Apr 02 - 12:25 PM Nope, but it's a hell of a cool instrument, isn't it? There's a large cult of nyckelharpa players in my area (Minnesota), and one couple almost succeeded in "converting" me last year. Good luck, Sam. The world need more nyckelharpa players. :) ---Lepus Rex |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Apr 02 - 12:25 PM It's been brought up a time or two around here in the forum, but no players that I can find. I did find a really neat website someone had listed in a post........The American Nyckelharpa Association.......lots of info and links too. Oddly enough Sam, the thing seems to be right down your alley!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Apr 02 - 12:31 PM HEY LEPUS........Are you talking about These Guys? Man I guess they ARE serious up there!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: Lepus Rex Date: 27 Apr 02 - 12:40 PM Yeah, I think that's them, Spaw. Thank god I escaped... I'd look awful in folk dress. ---Lepus Rex |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: wysiwyg Date: 27 Apr 02 - 01:10 PM No giant bass nyckelharpa? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Apr 02 - 02:01 PM That's a new one on me. Funny thing is, last time I was listening to a hurdy gurdy it occurred to me to wonder if it wouldn't be possible to make one that played with a bow instead of a wheel, and now it seems they've been around all this time.
An interesting sound. But I wonder if there's another name for it? Nickelharpa (however you choose to spell it) sounds like something you'd get out of a Christmas Cracker. |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: Lepus Rex Date: 27 Apr 02 - 02:21 PM Nah, I don't think so, McGrath. It's pretty much uniquely Swedish. But according to the ANA, it's also "historically been called "nyckelgiga", "nyckelspel" and "nyckel-lira" as well," if that helps. :) ---Lepus Rex |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: wysiwyg Date: 27 Apr 02 - 02:37 PM Cuz you get a wooden nickel as payment if you gig with it, unless you are playing gospel or are in Italy. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: GUEST Date: 27 Apr 02 - 05:24 PM WYSIWYG, Why have you decided to punctuate an interesting and intelligent thread with completely unfunny and unnecessary inanities? Is that what they call flaming? |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Apr 02 - 05:48 PM I also see from that site it's sometimes called a "key-fiddle", which gives a clearer idea maybe, and doesn't invite as many jokes as any name starting "nickle" is inevitably going to. One of the names for a hurdy gurdy is a "wheel fiddle" which is an analogous construction.
I'm all for Sam getting one. If anyone can get it under control, he can. |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 28 Apr 02 - 04:50 AM Well cheers everyone for the input! It should get me started to finding a harpa for myself. I guess if I start playing it I'll be the only 'Nickelharpa-catter' in the world then? Cheers, Sam |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: Gypsy Date: 28 Apr 02 - 09:57 PM Don't play it, but have friends who do. Beautifull instrument, if you can afford it (ouch$$$$$$!) |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 29 Apr 02 - 04:58 AM Whoops!! bit of a mistake there!!!!, what I meant to say is - "I'll be the only Mudcatter that plays a Nickelharpa, Will I?" Cheers, Sam |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: bernil Date: 29 Apr 02 - 05:56 AM Nyckel is the Swedish word for key so key fiddle must be the best translation even if we say "key harp". I don't know why some say nickel. Perhaps just because is sounds like that and it's a word you recognise... By the way, our most famous key fiddler is Åsa Jinder Lyssna means listen! Berit in Sweden |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: GUEST,Sarah Cheffins Date: 29 Apr 02 - 06:48 AM Actually - depending on how fast you get hold of one, you might not be the first Catter. I'm actively after one too and have been since I did a workshop with Olaf from Vasen at Folkbeat Derby this year. Race ya! Cheers Sarah |

Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: bernil Date: 03 May 02 - 03:54 AM Hi Sam! I found a Nyckelharpa buider in Falun, Peder Källman . Unfortunarely his site is in Swedish only but you can send a mail to him and we can hope that he understands English.. He seems to be in the right age for that! Or... perhaps I could try to translate the text on his site for you. I've been to the Falun Festival once but now my MS is too bad so I can't walk a lot. It would have been great to see some Mudcatters! Berit |

Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: John P Date: 08 May 02 - 11:04 PM I have fooled around on the nyckelharpa a bit. My wife plays. You can see a picture of her doing so in the member's photo section under "John P". It's a great instrument. We don't do any Nordic music on it, but will probably get around to that one of these days. We've been using it for English, French, Appalachian, and medieval music. All the sympathetic strings make it sound like an old viol being played in a cathedral. We were on vacation in Santa Fe last week and were taken out to a lounge to hear the only nyckelharpa player in New Mexico. She was amazed that there was another player in the audience. John P |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: katlaughing Date: 08 May 02 - 11:47 PM Sam, I thought about you and your superb accordion playing the other night when we watched a program about young Tex-Mex musicians who have brought new life to folk songs of their ancestors through their accordion playing. You can read about some of the older traditional players and the young ones at Accordion Dreams at PBS. There were qute a few young women playing now, even though it has not been a traditional instrument for women in that culture, and they were really good. It was fun to see younger people connecting to their roots and having so much fun with it as we saw you do on Mudcat radio. Have fun with the nyckleharpa. I'll never forget how the sound of them capitvated me the first time I heard one on NPR and posted that first thread. kat |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: Sam Pirt Date: 09 May 02 - 12:19 PM Hi All Sarah, you can check out a new thread of mine....... "Just ordered a Nyckelharpa!!!" Kat - I'll have fun alright!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers, Sam |
Subject: RE: Help: Anyone play the Nickelharpa? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Jul 02 - 06:52 PM And last night I switched on BBC Four TV, and there was a THE NYCKELHARPA STRIKES BACK - a whole hour about the instrument. Fascinating stuff. I basked smugly in the knowledge that I already knew a fair bit about it from the Mudcat. Once again we're ahead of the game.
Looking forward to hearing what Sam Pirt makes of it. Looks as if it could be fun to play, murder to tune, and painful to listen to until the player has done a lot of practice. But a great sound when it's played right.
I imagine this time next year we'll be knee-deep in them at folk festivals. |
