There's a lomng road that runs from the highland city of Guadalajara, down hills and over lakes and past volcanoes and on and on to reach the Pacific coast and there is a stretch of that road that lasts for scores of miles with nothing built on it and no signage. It is really quite pretty. Not at all like American freeways with their overabundance of synthetic information. Anyway, you drive and drive without seeing a sign and then way up at the horizon, lo! there seems to be a sign. You can't wait to see what it could say! You drive and drive and sure enough the silhouette grows larger and it really is a traffic sign, the only one around for over fifty miles in either direction. And all it says is "Please Obey Traffic Signs".

Only in Mexico.

There used to be a sign on the NE escarpment (or whatever you call it) of Seattle's Capitol Hill, when I was a kid, that read:

DUMP

NO GARBAGE OR RUBBISH

I thought it was just hilarious. I mean, what's a dump for if not garbage and rubbish?

I was delighted when in York to discover Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate (You were close, DMcG.) I'm curious to know what the origin is - perhaps you could enlighten me with a PM if I ever get my cookie back.

Others that amused me - this belongs in the town names thread, actually, but it was the sign for it that nearly sent my friend and I off the road in hysterics - Twatt, in the Orkneys.

And in Thurso, I found a street sign I still have yet to entirely understand. It said, "Changed Priorities."

We drove through a very narrow canyon near Manitou Springs, Colorado on a one-way road due to the narrowness of the canyon. Near the end of the road there was a highway bridge wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overhead. On that bridge was a sign that could only be read with binoculars -

Clearance - 195 feet.

I doubt that any trucks tall enough to care were ever on that road!

There's a roadside service station and lunch spot near the NSW-Queensland border which advertises - or at any rate used to advertise the last time I saw it - two kinds of petrol (gasoline) as well as theie home made speciality. The notice read:

UNLEADED

The first time I drove through Oregon (1988) I saw quite a few signs that said "Bridge Work Ahead" (which was of course cognate with "Road Construction Ahead"); but for some reason I thought they meant dentures. The problem in this case was in my head, not the head of whoever wrote the sign. But I just couldn't shake it. All the way from Astoria to Ashland and back I kept thinking they were advertising dentists (like the "Next Exit: Gas | Lodging | Food" signs).

Careful driving isn't the law in England--just a veiled suggestion--eh, Graham? *G*

Re the "crossing" signs, I knew of a guy who had one made up that said "SLUG CROSSING." The he collected a bunch of the little critters from his garden, placed them single-file across his sidewalk, and snapped a photo of them crossing in front of his sign.

BTW, I think we have BEAVER CROSSING signs in appropriate places in Oregon. Do they have ARMADILLO CROSSINGsigns in Texas?

There's a village in England called Bunny, which has a sign: "PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY THROUGH BUNNY". Splat...

And another village called Hints, which has the sign: "HINTS - PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY".

There's quite a few places in Britain I've seen "duck crossing" signs, a red triangle with a picture of a fat duck on it. But only in the States have I had to slow down and carefully overtake a convoy of a couple of dozen Canada geese waddling calmly along the road and taking up a whole lane! :-)

Graham.

Genie: LOL!

I'm always frustrated by the electronic sign at the PA Turnpike entrance that occasionally advises motorists to tune their car-radios to a certain AM station for traffic warnings. Trouble is, I can't tune my radio to the station; that frequency isn't even on my radio's "dial" (electronic menu)! So I am forced to drive on in ignorance, hoping that the problem will be reported by the all-news station in Philadelphia before I end up in the middle of a traffic jam!

Along a similar line there is a company less than three blocks from my home named "Professional Sign and Engraving" and they advertise that name through a painted sign on a front wall that is peeling and looks like it was last painted (never mind engraved) sometime prior to World War II.

I just thought of something else, which isn't a sign at all. I was in Kuala Lumpur, trying to locate some family members of an Army friend whose name was Yee. I looked up the name in the phone book and found someone there whose name was--no joke--Yee Fart.

I didn't call him/her up.

I saw a sign in Taiwan that brought me up short, and I had to go back and photograph it: Happy VD Clinic.

A Major I knew in the Army told me that a restaurant in Japan has a pool stocked with carp for decor. The sign outside invites the hungry to "Come in, have a drink, and look at the crap in the pool."

A common famale name in Viet-Nam is also the name of a flower. It is pronounced "Yoom" and spelled "Dung". And in case you haven't guessed, in a village not far from Saigon is a restaurant with the appealing name of "Cafe Dung."

Speaking of orthographically challenged stippers: Years ago, the then First Interstate Bank (now subsumed by Wells Fargo) was putting up a big building in downtown Seattle, and all around the construction site they posted proud-parent-like signs announcing:

Future home of...

FIRST
INTESTATE
CENTER

I was working in a law firm kitty-corner (that's catercorner for the rest of you) from it, and the lawyers all thought it was hilarious.

AHHH!! STOP IT GUYS!! I'm sitting at my work desk in tears!! If I get caught, there'll be some explaining to do!

I have two good ones to add.

Someone once changed the dot-light sign on the highway to:

"Police now targeting DONUT SHOPS"

The other one is a huge sign outside a sleazy pub. I saw it when they first finished painting it - it read "STIPPERS STIPPERS STIPPERS"

and it looked even funnier when someone added three tiny "r"s.

I grew up in a small town in Western NY. A prominent lawyer in our town named Moriarty was running for state Assemblyman. He went all out in his campaign, complete with bumper stickers with his name emblazened on them. There was a street sign not far from his house (Still there, I might add) which read "Slow - watch out for children." Well, you can guess where the bumper sticker ended up..."Slow - watch out for Moriarty." Apparently it worked. I don't think he was elected.

Cheers Lynn

I've always liked "Slow Children at Play".

In my area there are a lot of deer-crossing signs, which consist solely of a black silhouette of a leaping buck on a diamond-shaped yellow sign. On several of them, you'll find that kids have put a red bicycle reflector on the nose of the deer.

Recently I saw a disturbing sign in front of a church near my home. It was one of those signs large enough for clever, pithy messages to be posted, and changed every so often. One week, the message had been changed to read, "God loves you but that's not enough" (meaning, I suppose, that one still has to be "saved" – but nevertheless it sounded as if they felt that God's love was inadequate somehow!). Evidently, some of the church's parishioners must have been disturbed by it as well, because a couple of days later the "but" and the "not" had been removed from the message!

Jim if you will click on Mrs Duck's clickie above you will see that very sign! One that we see quite often around here due to much construction is:

ROAD WORK NEXT 5 MILES

I always have to wonder if that means the road doesn't work after that five miles?

then there's always the one:

SLOW MEN WORKING

Seems the work would get done a lot faster if they got some fast men to do the job, but then for what they probably get paid, I wouldn't work fast either!

FLOOR SLIPPERY WHEN WE|-

For a company I worked for, I would take pictures of safety hazards at their sites and send them, anonymously, to the site managers. One was of a sign lying on the ground beside an abandoned building which read, "WARNING : Falling Debris." Another on the ground was, "CAUTION : Jet blast area." Another - "NO SMOKING" sign on a building demolition job where there was a half dozen lads cutting steel with propane torches.
