Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 May 02 - 05:59 AM When I was working on Teeside in the late sixties, there was a construction firm that had road signs in local dialect. Instead of "Drive Carefully" their signs read "Gan Canny". They also had a picture of a giant daisy crushing cars on their "Heavy Plant Crossing" signs. A local riding stables advertises "Do-it-yourself Manure". |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: GUEST,macca Date: 12 May 02 - 11:15 PM When I first came to sunny Queensland to live I was suckered in by NOTHROUGH ROAD. I readily admit I thought it was pronounced No-thruff for a little while until I realised how many of them there were. Reminds me that my wife was also puzzled in Germany by all the autobahn signs pointing to AUSFAHRT, which didn't appear anywhere on the map she was using. |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: DD Date: 12 May 02 - 11:01 PM There is a town called.........MORO. The kids keep adding an N While traveling through Mississippi I was reading a series of signs......which included "stay awake" and "read sings" Well, if you aren't reading that last one isn't going to help...and if you are you really don't need to be told to read them now do you. And, if you dont know to stay awake while driving...well you probably arent able to read at all, now are you. |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: harvey andrews Date: 12 May 02 - 08:08 PM My wife and I play a game in England where road signs often point to two villages on the same sign. Read together the village names often sound like some character from Dickens or W.C.Fields. Our favourite sign is just outside Much Wenlock and points to Homer Wigwig. You make him up! |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: GUEST Date: 12 May 02 - 06:42 PM Oh, sorry sophocleese, I get it now! You didn't realise that 'alarm' is both a verb and a noun. Silly me! ROTFLMAO!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: GUEST Date: 12 May 02 - 06:38 PM Don't quite get that one, sophocleese? "Warning This door is alarmed" seems an eminently sensible thing to tell potential users

Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: sophocleese Date: 12 May 02 - 06:26 PM One warning sign I've seen a lot on the last few years that always gets me giggling is: "Warning! This door is ALARMED!" So I should stay quiet and try not to upset it any more? Also I see a lot of

Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: GUEST,Ed Date: 12 May 02 - 02:42 PM I've always liked the signs pointing the way to the "Secret Nuclear Bunker" There are loads around Nantwich in Cheshire, UK. Also some in Essex I believe. Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 May 02 - 02:32 PM Many years ago, intending to reach the extreme bottom left-hand point of Ireland, and getting a bit disorientated in the usual mist, we encountered a warning sign which depicted a car going over a cliff. Below this, on the same pole, there was another sign, this one prohibiting U-turns. In the bottom right-hand corner of England there used to be s sign pointing to both Ham and Sandwich, in that order. Maybe it's still there, as the two communities are only a few miles apart. |

Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Mrs.Duck Date: 12 May 02 - 02:02 PM The sign outside the registry office when Geoff and I got married said 'Quiet wedding in process.' With something like 150 folkies including 2 morris sides this was unlikely! |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: catspaw49 Date: 12 May 02 - 01:51 PM One of my favorites is still at the Drive-Thru Beer Barn joint just outside of town. Keep in mind, it's a drive-thru to pick up your beer. On the outside sign they have a large placard that says.....TANNING I guess you get it as you drive thru....one arm at a time. Great link Tweed....Always loved Burma-Shave stuff. Also the crosses posted along many southern highways. When I was in college we had a meeting at Fontana Dam and it's like midnight and I'm flying down the mountain switchbacks with 4 other folks who are white as ghosts hanging on for dear life (young and stupid and invincible I was!!), when, on a sharp hairpin with tires squealing, my headlights flash on a cross that say, "Get Right With God." Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 May 02 - 01:39 PM In Manchster, at the heart of the Gay Village, lies 'Canal Street'. Trouble is some wag keeps whiting out the C and the S. Honest!!! When I was in Ireland a few years back it really tickled me that the speed restrction signs where still in miles per hour while the distance signs were all in kilometers. Used to take some quick mental arithmetic to figure out how long it would take to get anywhere! Is it still the same anyone know? Cheers Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Don Firth Date: 12 May 02 - 12:44 PM Here and there around town one sees signs that say "DANGER ZONE -- IMPOUND PARKED CARS." I spotted one where someone had scrapped off the "D" and the "M" so it read, "ANGER ZONE -- I POUND PARKED CARS." Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Banjer Date: 12 May 02 - 06:25 AM Sign out side a radiator shop in St. Petersburg, it has been their slogan for years: 'Best place in St. Pete to take a leak'.....I always have to wonder about the sign in the parking lot at a local McDonalds..'Parking for drivethru only' I always assumed the whole idea of drivethru was so you wouldn't have to park??? |

Every time the proprietors fixed it someone changed it back to "Fat" until they just quit trying. I remember one of those Fawlty Towers signs switched to Flowery Twats. vl |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Nigel Parsons Date: 11 May 02 - 06:23 AM My favourite is the ubiquitous "lollipop" held up by school crossing patrols in this country (UK). Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: Celtic Soul Date: 10 May 02 - 11:50 PM Though this is not something I saw on the road, I have always loved the opening to "Fawlty Towers" where they play scrabble with the letters. There is a bar in Baltimore, MD. called "Berthas". They have a famous slogan (there's a song about it as well) that is printed on bumper stickers. It says "Eat Berthas Mussles" (Baltimore is famous for seafood). People do much the same with the letters of the bumper stickers, and if I had any memory what so ever, I'd relate the funnier ones here. Perhaps it's time for a road trip to Berthas! |
Subject: RE: BS: (Non music) Funny road signs From: khandu Date: 10 May 02 - 11:43 PM I guess this one isn't funny unless you have a perverse sense of humor. I drove past a restaurant that had one of those changeable signs that read: "Today-Smothered Chicken". I had to pull over, because I could not drive and laugh so hard. I had a mental image of someone approaching a panic-stricken chicken with a pillow. I guess you had to be there(sigh)! khandu |
