I always believed she could have been more than she became.

Now we know why she never stayed on top - it was because of the addiction to pot.

Hope she gets some re-hab help out of this incident.

Sad, Sad, Sad

Heh... addiction to pot... Now THAT'S funny!

The sad part is that it made the news at all... Do you have any idea how many people daily are 'busted' for this level of possession???

THAT'W what's really stupid...

Copied as close to memory as possible from the great standup philosopher, Leonard A. Schneider:

"Marijuana will lead you to all sorts of other things and into a life of narcotics. Heroin, Cocaine...they start with marijuana!

Yeah....right.........

Marijuana.......marijuana.......marijuana gives you one thing.....the Devil's Tool............Pleasure.............But you go to jail and you wind up in the same cell as murderer and.....

'So tell me cellmate....How did you get into this life of crime and become the robber, rapist, and murderer you are now?'

'Well, I started playing Bingo in the Catholic Church.........'

Yeah....Marijuana.....what a crime......."

LOL! Spaw.I'm amazed that people still spout that tosh about getting addicted to grass. The laws in the US on cannabis are ridiculous even the uptight Brit politicians are relaxing the laws nonetheless she is stupid for being so blatant about it knowing what could happen.Drug prohibition simply does not work anywhere and never has it's time to wake up to that fact and come up with a different plan on how to deal with the drug issue.

To arrest anyone for the personal possession of a few joints isn't just stupid...it's ridiculous. The illegality of marijuana itself is ridiculous, and is supported by people who are woefully ignorant of both the substance and its effects...or are just sheep who believe anything Big Brother tells them.

They are also sheep who are routinely addicted to any number of dangerous legal substances which ARE addictive. Marijuana is not, and it's not dangerous either.

What a farce it all is. What a waste of time for police and for the courts. What a sad and sorry social mess.

A free people should have the absolute right to grow, harvest, and smoke marijuana if they so desire.

I have no personal liking for it whatsoever...I don't like smoking ANYTHING nor do I have a desire to get stoned on anything...but it should not be illegal.

People wouldn't be worried about "getting on top" in the first place, were they not addicted to fame. Now that's an addiction worth watching out for, kiddies...it can screw up your whole life! I kid you not.

Wasn't it "A Child's Garden Of Grass" that made a statement to the effect that it would take as much marijuana as could be contained in the Empire State Building to kill you?

How could anyone stay conscious and quit grinning long enough to ingest or inhale that much pot? But way back then, I thought it would be fun to give it a try.

Well, having been on the wagon for several months, you'd think I'd be craving herion but to tell ya the honest truth, it was fun for about a half an hour and then just made me sleepy.

Yep, Little Hawk is right. Fame, Cola and cigarettes are the real addicters.

Think I'll go back on the wagon....

LOL! Actually, Bobert, I've always thought the supposed effects of pot were very exaggerated in most people's minds. According to my observations of others, and my own firsthand experiences I can say this...most people get about as stoned on it as they think they are going to...or ought to. I had one friend who got outrageously stoned on...vitamin pills. He'd been told they were "uppers" by friends who were playing a trick on him. He even had hallucinations. They didn't have the heart to tell him afterward that it was only vitamin pills, and I doubt he would have believed them anyway! :-)

That a civilization should attach so much importance to an innocuous substance like pot is clear evidence that we are not nearly as enlightened as people like to think we are. Matter of fact, we're still in the Dark Ages, mired in mythology, superstition, and deep ignorance.

Wow! Dionne Warwick.Man it sure is strange that the two things that do NOTHING for you, alcohol and tobacco, are legal and yet the two things that are grown naturally on the planet, pot and mushrooms, are illegal. Don't you think that making something that grows naturally, against the law, a bit unnatural.

All things in moderation. Except for the police, of course.

Pot will never be legal in a society which allows the booze barons to control the legislators. In Canada, in the '70's, a Royal Commission, the LeDain Commission (?), recommended the legalization of pot. Now, when a Royal Commission says let's do this or that, it usually gets done. However, around the same time, I recall reading that Seagram's was the third most profitable corporation in NA at around a half billion dollars per annum.

In any case, I don't care what the laws are regarding pot or booze or cocaine or whatever. Except for tobacco, for which a date should be set for irradication.... the sooner the better. Let's see those SWAT teams raiding tobacco farms.

I agree with pict: Trying to sneak some marijuana onto a plane in a lipstick case – knowing that airports are screening people with more diligence these days than they used to, and knowing that marijuana possession is currently illegal in the US – was just plain dumb. She could have had gotten some, or had someone in her entourage get some for her, after she'd reached her flight destination, where the odds are better that she wouldn't have gotten caught. Bad career move, Dionne.

Yes, it is very silly to try to take marijuana through an airport security, no doubt about that. But not as silly as making it illegal in the first place! However, those are 2 entirely separate matters...

Metchosin - I stand by what I said. Pot is no big deal, and I have been amazed for decades by how big a deal people make it into...whether they are for it or against it. Most of my friends in the early 70's were virtually religious about the stuff...along with its spinoffs, hash and hash oil. It was laughable how serious they were about it all, and how much it occupied their daily attention, conversation, and so on. Meanwhile, life was going by....

On the rare few occasions (a handful) when I tried smoking it, just in order to become informed as to precisely what was going on, I got...

1st time: VERY stoned for about 10 minutes, didn't like it too much, exerted some rigorous mental control and got un-stoned after a brief struggle. (and it tasted bloody awful)

2nd time: nothing. No effect whatsoever. Still smelled and tasted bloody awful.

3rd, 4rth, 5th times: Like the 2nd time. What is the fuss about anyway??? Decided the whole thing was a complete waste of time...not to mention money.

6th time: (Fifteen years later) Smoked a joint that had been packed with roaches, unbeknownst to me, from 15 or 20 previous joints...got VERY stoned for about 1/2 hour. It was an experience that was at first interesting, then frightening, then exhilarating, then relaxing.

7th & 8th times: (shortly thereafter) No effect whatsoever.

These experiences occurred over a period of about 20 years, during which I observed hundreds and hundreds of other people smoking thousands and thousands of joints, hash pipes, etc. What I can mainly say about it is, people do it in order to fit in with their peers, because it is "forbidden fruit", and because they associate it with being fun and with being "cool". People are silly.

However, it could be a whole lot worse. They could be drinking and smoking cigarettes! Matter of fact, most of them did those things too... (sigh) People are damned silly.

Little Hawk: I think you're on to something. I just read in last weeks Washington Post about anit-depression medications for which a lot of folks are shelling out their hard earned dough. Well Paxil and Zoloft don't do as well as sugar pills. They actually did CAT scans and found that the folks on the sugar pills were effected more than those on the high priced stuff.

So I guess if there are any Catters out there taking anti-depressdants, you might want to ask your doctors to change your perscriptions to sugar pills...

Don't know why this is not in the DT collection but here is Shel Silverstein's "Smoke Off"

In the laid back California town of sunny San Rafael

Lived a girl named Pearly Sweetcake, you prob'ly knew her well.

She'd been stoned fifteen of her eighteen years and the story was widely told

That she could smoke 'em faster than anyone could roll.

Her legend finally reached New York, that Grove Street walk-up flat

Where dwelt The Calistoga Kid, a beatnik from the past

With long browned lightnin' fingers he takes a cultured toke

And says, "Hell, I can roll 'em faster, Jim, than any chick can smoke!"

So a note gets sent to San Rafael, "For the Championship of the World

The Kid demands a smoke off!" "Well, bring him on!" says Pearl,

"I'll grind his fingers off his hands, he'll roll until he drops!"

Says Calistog, "I'll smoke that twist till she blows up and pops!"

So they rent out Yankee Stadium and the word is quickly spread

"Come one, come all, who walk or crawl, price – just two lids a head

And from every town and hamlet, over land and sea they speed

The world's greatest dopers, with the Worlds greatest weed Hashishers from Morocco, hemp smokers from Peru

And the Shamnicks from Bagun who puff the deadly Pugaroo

And those who call it Light of Life and those that call it boo.

See the dealers and their ladies wearing turquoise, lace, and leather

See the narcos and the closet smokers puffin' all together

From the teenies who smoke legal to the ones who've done some time

To the old man who smoked "reefer" back before it was a crime

And the grand old house that Ruth built is filled with the smoke and cries

Of fifty thousand screaming heads all stoned out of their minds.

And they play the national anthem and the crowd lets out a roar

As the spotlight hits The Kid and Pearl, ready for their smokin' war

At a table piled up high with grass, as high as a mountain peak

Just tops and buds of the rarest flowers, not one stem, branch or seed.

Maui Wowie, Panama Red and Acapulco Gold.

Kif from East Afghanistan and rare Alaskan Cold.

Sticks from Thailand, Ganja from the Islands, and Bangkok's Bloomin' Best.

And some of that wet imported shit that capsized off Key West.

Oaxacan tops and Kenya Bhang and Riviera Fleurs.

And that rare Manhatten Silver that grows down in the New York sewers.

And there's bubblin' ice cold lemonade and sweet grapes by the bunches.

And there's Hershey's bars, and Oreos, 'case anybody gets the munchies.

And the Calistoga Kid, he sneers, and Pearley, she just grins.

And the drums roll low and the crowd yells "GO!" and the world's first Smoke Off begins.

Kid flicks his magic fingers once and ZAP! that first joint's rolled.

Pearl takes one drag with her mighty lungs and WOOSH! that roach is cold.

Then The Kid he rolls his Super Bomb that'd paralyze a moose.

And Pearley takes one super hit and SLURP! that bomb' defused.

Then he rolls three in just ten seconds and she smokes 'em up in nine,

And everybody sits back and says, "This just might take some time."

See the blur of flyin' fingers, see the red coal burnin' bright

As the night turns into mornin' and the mornin' fades to night

And the autumn turns to summer and a whole damn year is gone

But the two still sit on that roach-filled stage, smokin' and rollin' on

With tremblin' hands he rolls his jays with fingers blue and stiff

She coughs and stares with bloodshot gaze, and puffs through blistered lips.

And as she reaches out her hand for another stick of gold

The Kid he gasps, "Goddamn it, bitch, there's nothin' left to roll!"

"Nothin' left to roll?", screams Pearl, "Is this some twisted joke?"

"I didn't come here to fuck around, man, I come here to SMOKE!"

And she reaches 'cross the table And grabs his bony sleeves

And she crumbles his body between her hands like dried and brittle leaves

Flickin' out his teeth and bones like useless stems and seeds

And then she rolls him in a Zig Zag and lights him like a roach. And the fastest man with the fastest hands goes up in a puff of smoke.

In the laid-back California town of sunny San Rafael

Lives a girl named Pearly Sweetcake, you prob'ly know her well.

She's been stoned twenty-one of her twenty-four years, and the story's widely told.

How she still can smoke them faster than anyone can roll

While off in New York City on a street that has no name.

There's the hands of the Calistoga Kid in the Viper Hall of Fame

And underneath his fingers there's a little golden scroll

That says, Beware of Bein' the Roller When There's Nothin' Left to Roll.

REEFER MADNESS

'There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.'

Good point, Mario. Chocolate is HIGHLY addictive, mind-altering, and it rots your teeth! The reason marijuana is illegal is:

1. you can easily create it in the privacy of your own home or garden...thus it is not possible to monopolize it through a big, profitable industry, package it, and sell it for 500 times what it's worth to people who can't figure out how to manufacture it themselves!!! This is not the case with chocolate, liquor, or tobacco...

2. Social prejudice. It was originally the drug of the "lower classes"...hispanics, blacks, and jazz musicians...society's rejects in the view of the high and mighty...therefore it was stigmatized as a "bad drug". Tobacco, alcohol, and chocolate on the other hand belong to "decent" society...in fact are quite upper class.

GUEST - And what kind of fool would I have to be to spend $200 to $500...just for a brief high???? You gotta be kidding. Money isn't so easy to get that I'm going to "blow" it in that fashion, I can assure you. Besides, the other people who were smoking that stuff that I found so underwhelming thought it was first-class stuff! And, hell, they were far more experienced at it than I was. I think the whole thing is a tempest in a tea pot. If it was legal, nobody would think it was a big deal anymore. If you made coffee illegal, people would soon be willing to pay almost ANYTHING for it, and MAN would they ever get high! It's asinine to make any natural substance illegal for people to use if they want to use it, and it arises out of a self-righteous Christian religious heritage which is as hypocritical as it is impractical. They used to outlaw dancing and tea drinking too, you know...led straight to Satan, they said.

Little Hawk I don't doubt that you had little or no effect you have after all you only tried it a few times I was smoking for quite a while and thought I was immune to the effects I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about then one night I mentioned this to some smokers I knew so they set about trying to get me stoned and wham!!!I got so out of my head it wasn't funny and I had a whitey of mythical proportions after that whenever I had a smoke I got stoned according to the quality of the weed.It most certainly has well documented physical effects as scientific studies have shown. If you can get stoned on your own then I can't see how peer pressure can be relevant.

I gave up smoking about 12 years ago it was a combination of wanting to stop smoking tobacco and also the fact that to get some weed I had to go to a dealer where there were frequently shady characters looking for a bit and even the odd junkie(and I can't abide junkies) now and then, who I really didn't enjoy meeting.Of course if it had been legal I would have been able to grow my own and therefore could have avoided the ne'er do wells who sometimes hover around the hash scene. The following link has a lot of info on many drugs including user reports of positive and negative effects.

So I guess if there are any Catters out there taking anti-depressdants, you might want to ask your doctors to change your perscriptions to sugar pills...

See, I always knew chocolate was better than skunk!

Now, I know you people are true academics, so somebody find the study carried out under the auspices of New York's La Guardia administration in 1944, in answer to the notorious Harry Anslinger's absurd propaganda, and give us a blue clicky to it.

Oh and there is a superb documentary film about the whole subject, voiced over by actor Woody Harrelson, but I can't recall the title of it for the life of me . . . 'cos of my advancing years, not what you were thinking. Perhaps, one of you could provide the name, for the education and delight of the group.

And you might wish to look at the following:-

Bill Maher, of Politically Incorrect, says that marijuana will never be made legal until it someday kills someone.

Another reason for the ridiculous harassment of people smoking or possessing small amounts of pot for their personal use is that the "WAR ON DRUGS" is a big joke. The government has no real interest in stopping the cocaine and heroin trades because they are complicit in it. Kids today are back to snorting glue and inhalants, for gods' sake, and popping whatever pils they can find. Oxycontin is horribly addictive and prescriptions are stolen constantly so the drug can be sold on the street (since crushing and snorting it is now a fashionable new high). Also, kids are buying and using what they think is ecstasy pills and what they actually, often, get is whaetever the greedy "manufacturer" wants to put into it.

Marijuana takes up a lot of space, has a strong odor, and is easy to spot with infra-red devices in planes. Because it is so ubiquitous and so easy to find, by going after productive members of society who use, the govt and law enforcement can appear to be "winning" the "WAR ON DRUGS" but really all they are doing is making the drug abuse problem worse.

Guest with long hair smoking funny tobbacco-in the UK mushrooms are legal, as long as you don't cook them.I used to live opposite a cemetry (Northern Cemetry, Hull) and in certain times of the year I would often see people with long hair and beards picking mushrooms there.
