Whatever happened to Irish singer-songwriter Gerry Crean? I wasn't a great fan of his but I remember him from the Belfast Folk Festival and local radio programmes, probably about 20 years ago, and I haven't heard him recently. There were two songs which stuck in my head and it would be nice if someone can fill in the lyrics as well as answering my question. And for the other Mudcatters, if you can provide abc/midi that would be nice too!

A peace song
A Rose By Any Other Name

A rose by any other name is still a rose, just a rose
And a child who's taught to kill and maim is still a child
He's not to blame.

a song about a foundling baby
Marina [Marena?] Jane

Marena Jane, a pretty name, that's what they called her
Marena Jane, a pretty name, brought from the sea,
Marena Jane, a pretty name, some day she'll be
[bright as the moonbeams and ... something like that?]

I think you're refering to Gerry Creen, Philippa - a fine performer and a stalwart of the Belfast scene for many years. I haven't seen Gerry for about 10 years and when I returned to Belfast for a visit recently, I was told that he hadn't been performing much in recent years. A shame, really, because he had much to offer. By coincidence, his one and only album (which features the two songs you refer to)is listed on http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=47864&messages=1.

Sorry, Philippa, that web address should, of course, be www.worldrecordfairs.com/lists/folkae.doc

you've nothing to be sorry for, but why did you take offense? at my asking - as I do again - "... anyone know either of those songs? "

Personally, I prefer a non-Gerry Creaner in my coffee (less fat don't ya know)---and just one lump o' sugar.
