Subject: Mudcatters in Vietnam From: Kipling Date: 29 May 02 - 02:11 PM Hi there, After the first year of my course, I am working for a conservation organisation in Vietnam for a year. I will be based in Hanoi, North Vietnam. The thing is; what about Folk Music? Does anyone know of a folk scene in Vietnam, or are there any mudcatters out there in Hanoi or further afield?. Will I be the first? I hoping to take numerous tapes and C.D's with me- oh and my anglo concertina which i've been trying to learn to play for a long time.Anyone got any suggestions on how survive without Folk- a long way from home. Subject: RE: Mudcatters Currently in Vietnam? From: Steve in Idaho Date: 29 May 02 - 05:12 PM Viet Nam is a beautiful place and I would encourage you to take your instrument and sing wherever you end up. The Clicky I gave you will tell you about their music and their history. I'd encourage you to learn some of their music.

Subject: RE: Mudcatters Currently in Vietnam? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 30 May 02 - 04:15 AM If you can make contact with an aptly-named Irishwoman called Christina Noble who runs a children's home in Saigon (sorry, Ho Chi Minh City), she may be able to point you in the right direction because she also sings and plays guitar. I don't know how involved she is in any music "scenes" (especially as far away as Hanoi) but she's lived in Nam for years and is probably pretty aware of whatever's going on. There's a book about her called "Mama Tina" which gives more info. Good luck in your interesting-sounding work, and let us know how you get on! |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters Currently in Vietnam? From: katlaughing Date: 30 May 02 - 04:32 AM There is a lot of interesting information at Fodor's miniguide to Hanoi, too. Looks as though there may be some good pubs, all kinds of food places, including Mexican, and some interesting folk arts of Viet Nam to learn about. Stop back in, now and then, and tell us about it, please? It sounds really interesting, both your work and the country. kat |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters Currently in Vietnam? From: paddymac Date: 30 May 02 - 04:59 AM Good advice given above. I would only add that "folk" includes the music other people do as well as your own tradition. It should be about sharing, not competition or imposition. Relax and enjoy the totality of the experience. |
