My lady friend who is studying for her exam in psychology, quoted Sigmund Freud. This immediately brought to mind the old ditty;

Oh, Dr. Freud, Oh, Dr. Freud, How I wish that you were otherwise employed....

Searching the DT, I found a DR.FREUD 2, parody on Gallagher & Sheen but not the version I remember from the GREAT FOLK MUSIC SCARE of the '60's. Anyone out there remember this? Where can I find it.

The only one I know is in the DT. It starts, "It happened in Vienna, not so very long ago, when not enough folks were getting sick." Search for the word Freud, and you'll get several possibilities.

My friend Verne Eke's duo, "Mel/Munro", has been performing a song that ends "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud", by Anna Russell, and I thought it should be in the Mudcat but couldn't find it. Google gave the following from ingeb.org, which looks to be the same song give or take a word or two; ingeb.org calls the tune "Ghostriders" but their MIDIs call it "An Old Cow"; certainly it's not "Ghostriders in the Sky"...

I think it's by a guy called David Levant. This is Mudcat, so it won't take long to get a correction if I am wrong! I used to sing this song many years ago.

I recall this as a calypso song by either The Talbot Bros. or Hubert Smith --both from Bermuda.   I tend to think it was Talbot Bros.

Just checked my old vinyls---a Bermuda records recording of the 1950s by Sidney Bean and Hubert Smith---the track is the Kinsery Report. Unfortunately I cannot play it anymore since that portion of the disc is damaged. Both artists, I am certain, are no longer alive.

"Doctor Freud," words and music by David Lazar, appears in Reprints from Sing Out!, volume 1, page 34. It lists a 1951 copyright by Lazar under the title "The Saga of Doctor Freud." (My copy of Reprint 1 is the tenth printing, copyright 1962)

In the first verse, the reprint has "...a STARVING young physician (not 'starring')..."

Dave Lazar's most famous song was GOTTA TRAVEL ON: "I've laid around and stayed around...." which was recorded by a multitude during the great folk scare.

The only other song by him that Allmusic.com lists is THE BALLAD OF SIGMUND FREUD, recorded by The Kingston Trio The Chad Mitchell Trio on "Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall." It was written by Bob March, Larry Glasser, and Dave Lazar.

It's the same song that Scouse posted as DOCTOR FREUD.

it was in one of those oak publication folksong books that used to be around way bay back in the 1960's. I always thought it was Shel Silverstein.

Just a couple comments. Firstly, a correction to Jim Dixon's comment. The version of The Ballad of Sigmund Freud on the Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall album was by The Chad MItchell Trio. I don't know if The Kingston Trio ever did it.

And regarding Gotta Travel On. I'd always thought of it as a Paul Clayton song....but according to one writeup where some of the accredited writers were interviewed, Paul Clayton wrote the chorus, and Dave Lazar later wrote the verses.

Interesting.
