Subject: Dr. Freud
From: Mark Ross
Date: 09 Jun 02 - 12:20 PM

My lady friend who is studying for her exam in psychology, quoted Sigmund Freud. This immediately brought to mind the old ditty;

Oh, Dr. Freud, Oh, Dr. Freud, How I wish that you were otherwise employed....

Searching the DT, I found a DR.FREUD 2, parody on Gallagher & Sheen but not the version I remember from the GREAT FOLK MUSIC SCARE of the '60's. Anyone out there remember this? Where can I find it.

The only one I know is in the DT. It starts, "It happened in Vienna, not so very long ago, when not enough folks were getting sick." Search for the word Freud, and you'll get several possibilities.

Subject: Lyr Add: JOLLY OLD SIGMUND FREUD
From: Haruo
Date: 06 Mar 05 - 06:37 PM

My friend Verne Eke's duo, "Mel/Munro", has been performing a song that ends "Jolly Old Sigmund Freud", by Anna Russell, and I thought it should be in the Mudcat but couldn't find it. Google gave the following from ingeb.org, which looks to be the same song give or take a word or two; ingeb.org calls the tune "Ghostriders" but their MIDIs call it "An Old Cow"; certainly it's not "Ghostriders in the Sky"...

Haruo

JOLLY OLD SIGMUND FREUD
(Anna Russell)

I went to my psychiatrist
To be psychoanalyzed
To find out why I killed the cat
And blacked my husband's eyes.
He laid me on a downy couch
To see what he could find,
So this is what he dredge-ed up
From my subconscious mind:

REFRAIN
Hey, libido, Bats in the belfry,
Hey, libido, Bats in the belfry,
Hey, libido, Bats in the belfry,
Jolly Old Sigmund Freud.

When I was one, my mommy hid
My dolly in a trunk,
And so it follows naturally
That I am always drunk.
When I was two, I saw my father
Kiss the maid one day,
And that is why I suffer now
From kleptomania.

At three, I had the feeling of
Ambivalence towards my brothers,
And so it follows naturally
I poisoned all my lovers.
But I am happy; now I've learned
The lesson this has taught;
That everything I do that's wrong -
Is someone else's fault.

Enjoy.. I far as can remember..

Doctor Freud.

Oh, it happened in Vienna not so very long ago,
When not enough folks were getting sick,
That a starving young physician tried to better his position,
by discovering what made his Patients tick.

He forgot about Sclerosis and invented the Psychosis,
and a hundred ways that sex could be enjoyed,
He adopted as his Credo, "Down repression, Up Libido,
and that was the start of Doctor Sigmund Freud.

Then he analyzed the dreams of the Teens and Libertines,
and he substituted monologues for pills,
He drew crowds just like Wells Saddler, then along came Jung and Adler,
who said, "By God, there's gold in them thar ills."

Now the big three have parted, but not so the cult they started,
it's been carried on by many a goodly band,
And to Trauma, shock, and war shock someone went and added Rorshach,
now things have got completely out of hand.

Now old men with double chinseys, and a million would-be Kinseys,
will discuss it at the drop of a repression,
Now I wouldn't be complaining but for all the dough I'm paying,
To lay down on someone's couch and say Confession.

REFRAIN..........

Oh, Doctor Freud, Oh, Doctor Freud
how I wish you had been otherwise employed,
For that set of circumstances sure enhances the finances
of the followers of Doctor Sigmund Freud.

As Aye,..Phil

I think it's by a guy called David Levant. This is Mudcat, so it won't take long to get a correction if I am wrong! I used to sing this song many years ago.

I recall this as a calypso song by either The Talbot Bros. or Hubert Smith --both from Bermuda.   I tend to think it was Talbot Bros.

Just checked my old vinyls---a Bermuda records recording of the 1950s by Sidney Bean and Hubert Smith---the track is the Kinsery Report. Unfortunately I cannot play it anymore since that portion of the disc is damaged. Both artists, I am certain, are no longer alive.

"Doctor Freud," words and music by David Lazar, appears in Reprints from Sing Out!, volume 1, page 34. It lists a 1951 copyright by Lazar under the title "The Saga of Doctor Freud." (My copy of Reprint 1 is the tenth printing, copyright 1962)

In the first verse, the reprint has "...a STARVING young physician (not 'starring')..."

Dave Lazar's most famous song was GOTTA TRAVEL ON: "I've laid around and stayed around...." which was recorded by a multitude during the great folk scare.

The only other song by him that Allmusic.com lists is THE BALLAD OF SIGMUND FREUD, recorded by The Kingston Trio The Chad Mitchell Trio on "Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall." It was written by Bob March, Larry Glasser, and Dave Lazar.

It's the same song that Scouse posted as DOCTOR FREUD.

it was in one of those oak publication folksong books that used to be around way bay back in the 1960's. I always thought it was Shel Silverstein.

very good, very clever ...too clever for me way back then.

Subject: Lyr Add: DING DONG (Jack Warshaw)
From: GUEST,Dr Jack
Date: 05 Jun 13 - 10:49 AM

Just composed a song to the tune of Dr Freud, which I heard by Pete Seeger in 1959. Always thought it had a touch of Tom Lehrer

DING DONG
©Jack Warshaw 2013

Tune: Dr Freud (D Lazar)

It was back in 79, not so very long ago
When bankers weren't getting quite so rich
That a Tory politician came to better her position
And become the British nation's leading bitch

Chorus:

Ding dong, Lady Blue
You're gone for good, let's give a rousing boo
You'll fly around no more on that broomstick by the door
And we'll never see another witch like you

The little war she soon selected, well it got her re-elected
Sold off every public service in a flash
She freely swung the chopper till the poll tax came a cropper
And vowed trade union rights would soon be smashed
                                                        Cho.

She snatched school milk away, supported Pinochet
Doubled VAT and unemployment overnight
Immigrants with darker skin were the enemy within
While she handbagged every minister in sight
                                                        Cho.

Now the old witch has departed but not so the plan she started
It's still gospel to her followers today
Her ghost will be to thank for "screw the workers, up the bankers."
And it's once again the poor who have to pay.
                                                        Cho.

From: Jim Dixon

DOCTOR FREUD
As sung by Pete Seeger on "Gazette, Vol. 1" (1958)

1. Oh, it happened in Vienna
Not so very long ago,
When not enough folks were getting sick,
That a starving young physician
Tried to better his position
By discovering what made his patients tick.

CHORUS: Oh, Doctor Freud,
Oh, Doctor Freud,
How we wish you had been differently employed,
For this set of circumstances
Sure enhances the finances
Of the followers of Doctor Sigmund Freud.

2. He forgot about sclerosis
But invented the psychosis,
Plus a hundred ways that sex could be enjoyed
He adopted as his credo,
"Down repression! Up libido!"
That was the start of Doctor Sigmund Freud.

3. He analyzed the dreams
Of the teens and libertines.
He substituted monologues for pills.
He drew crowds just like Wells Sadler,
When along came Jung and Adler,
Who said,"By God, there's gold in them thar ills."

4. They encountered no resistance
As they served as Freud's assistants
And with ego and with id they deftly toyed.
Instead of toting bedpans,
They bore analytic deadpans,
Those ambitious doctors Adler, Jung, and Freud.

5. Now the big three have departed,
But not so this thing they've started.
It's been carried on by many a goodly band,
And to trauma, shock, and war shock
Some one went and added Rorschach.
This thing has got completely out of hand.

Subject: Lyr Add: DOCTOR FREUD (from Buddy Hackett)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 05 Jun 13 - 10:26 PM

DOCTOR FREUD
Words and music by Jack Lawrence and Stan Freeman
As sung by Buddy Hackett in the original cast recording of "I Had a Ball" (1964)

Doctor Freud, Doctor Freud,
Doctor, please don't be annoyed,
But I really saw a vision, yes, I did.
Doctor Freud, Doctor Freud,
With your teachings I have toyed,
Now I've got a funny feeling in my id.

Does it mean that I'm repressing?
Or perhaps I'm retrogressing?
Though I sound an itsy-bitsy idiotic,
How can I dispel a vision
When it isn't television?
Does it mean I'm going schizzy or psychotic?

So all right, so OK,
I know just what you will say:
That my psyche has been playing me a trick.
My psyche, Doctor Freud?
My schmyche, Doctor Freud!
Leave us face it, Doctor Freud: I'm sick.

For after what occurred today,
I'm not too sure about you, Doctor,
Even though you are a name of great renown.
In your teachings, Doctor Freud,
My faith is practically destroyed,
And I don't intend to take it lying down.

You wrote reams of explanations
On all types of aberrations,
Not a word on supernatural hocus-pocus.
Well, take a good look at my case
And hold a ball up to your face,
And give those eyes of yours a big fat focus!

Oh, it lit up again! Aha! So I'm right, maybe?
Ooh! See the lights, huh? Sigmund, baby!
How do you explain a thing like that?
After spending all my youth,
Believing all you said was truth,
Now I find you're just a no-good lying rat.

When in the jug, your fuzzy mug
Was hanging up there on the wall,
Oh, I wouldn't think of hanging any others,
But tomorrow, I'll erase you.
Tomorrow, I'll replace you
And I'll hang up Doctor Joyce Brothers!

Who's afraid of Sigmund Freud, Sigmund Freud?

You're a fraud, Freud!
Yes a fraud, Freud, but I'm not afraid, Freud!
Not afraid 'cause now I've been freed, Freud!
Yes, freed, and I'm not even fried, Freud!
You're a frick-frack and I'm not a flip-flap!
You're a flim-flam and I'm not from Food Fair!
Doctor Freud, your diagnosis is absurd,
And for you I've got one final word:
Help!

Just a couple comments. Firstly, a correction to Jim Dixon's comment. The version of The Ballad of Sigmund Freud on the Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall album was by The Chad MItchell Trio. I don't know if The Kingston Trio ever did it.

And regarding Gotta Travel On. I'd always thought of it as a Paul Clayton song....but according to one writeup where some of the accredited writers were interviewed, Paul Clayton wrote the chorus, and Dave Lazar later wrote the verses.

Interesting.
