Just got a newsletter from Green Linnet......

Congratulations to Kevin Burke! The Irish fiddler has just been awarded a National Heritage Fellowship, the country's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts, by the National Endowment for the Arts. Past winners of the award, which honors folk artists for artistic excellence and contributions to their field, have included BB King, Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and Liz Carroll.

"Today Kevin Burke's name is synonymous with Irish fiddle music around the world," says the NEA. Kevin has played and recorded with musicians from Paul Brady to Christy Moore and his elegant, impassioned fiddle was a cornerstone of the legendary sound of The Bothy Band. These days he tours and records with such influential groups as Patrick Street and Celtic Fiddle Festival while maintaining a very active solo touring and recording career. Kevin Burke is "... fluid and precisely as tricky as he needs to be... probably the greatest Irish fiddler living." - The Village Voice.

You can hear Kevin interviewed this Saturday, June 15th, on Boston's WGBH-FM on Brian O'Donovan's "Celtic Sojourn" program, airing noon - 2:00pm Eastern Time at 89.7FM. If you're out of the area, listen online at http://www.wgbh.org/webcasts/

Kevin Burke's tour schedule can be found at: http://www.greenlinnet.com/tour/kburke.htm

He's great. He has come to Juneau a number of times- one of those performers I make sure I go to see. Good to see him getting the recognition.

A fine man and a great musician who has influenced a generation of fiddlers. His family are from the next village to mine in Ireland and, like me, he was brought up in London. That's where the similarity ends!

A thoroughly well-deserved Award!
