The great thing about animals is that they don't worry about mortality. They live every day as it comes, (not like us 'uprights'.)

The great thing about parents is that they don't want us to worry about them whatever happens.

Give it a year or two and you'll only only remember the good times. Trust me, I'm a lunatic.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. It must have been especially tough to loose Sam on a day which all ready had its share of sadness... Your burial spot sounds purrfect for Sam and every spring when the bluebells and bleeding hearts bloom you'll have warm memories of your father and Sam.

Thanks to everyone for all of your wonderful support...it really does help to have caring folks about, which is one reason I love Mudcat so much.

And for Sam, my cat...I buried him in my favorite woodland garden,nestled between the ferns, bluebells, and bleeding hearts. I bought a beautiful little stature of a cat to put on his grave. I'll call it Sam's Garden now.

As for another cat Ian...well, I have seven more, all ferals that I have taken in over the years. Sam was the oldest, taking care of them and loving them and teaching them those important feline skills. He's missed by more than me. Animals grieve too.

Thanks everyone for letting me ramble. Sam was diagnosed the same week my Dad went into the hospital. Dad made it one week, Sam made it 4 months. I think in my head, the two were linked together, and so the grief was greater. But the sun will rise tomorrow, and the memories will always be there.

Ah, Robin...loss, and double loss...very hard to deal with. Eventually, the one thing that hurts so much now is what will help later...all the wonderful years of having a good Dad, and a good cat, in your life. Hang in there, give grief its due...be especially good to yourself and give yourself all the time you need to grieve and recover.

I know how that feels...

Just try and remember all the good times you shared, the presents of Mice & and Birds dropped lovingly at your feet, the scratched wallpaper, the shed hair all over the carpet.

And as far as Sam is concerned, he'll be with your Dad now, probably looking down on you and wondering what all the fuss is about.

They've only moved on, and I bet they haven't gone anywhere bad.

Regarding what you're feeling at the present, I promise you things will get easier with the passage of time.

What you must do when you're ready is find another Pusscat that needs looking after.

Actually, forget the above. The right Cat will find you, and when it does don't think for a minute that you are replacing your last bestest friend in any way.

I know it hurts when you lose a pet/boss/employer/master/ tyrant, but there are hundreds of unwanted Cats that need homes and I think we should do everything we can to make the ungrateful sods welcome.

Father's Day has been difficult the last couple of years for me as well. A year TO THE DAY after my dad died, his favorite cat, Buster, crossed the Rainbow Bridge to keep him company.

Heaven will not ever Heaven be, unless my cats are there to welcome me.

My condolences, also, Robin. My mom passed on three years ago this January past and about a month after our old dog joined her. It was hard enough to lose one without losing the other, too. Have lost three more older cats since then, too, to the maladies of age. It is never easy, but Linn is right...they are in your heart forever.

Perhaps it would help you to write about your dear one. Make a list of all the things your furry friend taught you.

Along those lines, I highly recommend the book The Tenth Good Thing About Barney, about a funeral for a favorite cat. The words and pictures together are like a literary hug -- at least, they are for me... I haven't read it since I was a child, but it still echoes in my memory.

I really do know how you feel -- my dad died two years ago on May 4. I was barely back from his funeral half way across the country and with still no time by myself to grieve when a beloved cat, Calliope, died on June 4 after a short illness. I felt guilty about tears for a cat when I had just lost my father and hadn't yet had time to mourn for him. Coupled with the grief for the loss of each of them. Knocked me into a funk and a real sucky depressed week -- made worse because my birthday was 5 days later. Not a wonderful time at all.

Whatever you've held in your heart is never truly lost, but please accept my sympathy for the loss of your feline friend and your father.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Robin. And so close on the heels of your Dad's passing. That's hard.

Robin, All I can say is that I really do empathize with you--in a small way, since I've had to say goodbye to a couple of my own very dear feline friends over the past few years, and having lost quite a few close friends and family members during the same time period. It must be devastating to lose your dad and your moggy friend so close together.

Sorry to hear about your cat Robin. I have had my cat for over 18 years, she is still pretty fit but it is always just a matter of time - I will miss her when she's gone. Sorry about your dad too.

Well, I lost my Dad in March, so this father's day was going to be rough anyway...

My best and most wonderful cat Sam died today as well...I buried him in the garden, then took flowers to Dad...feeling kinda numb with grief right now, and just reaching out....
