Subject: DT tune corrections From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 20 Jun 02 - 05:58 AM The tune given for 'Making Babies By Steam' in the DT is 'Haste to the Wedding'. This is not correct, in fact I find it difficult to sing the words to that tune. The lyrics were copied from a 1999 message of mine to the IrTrad-L mailing list. Other messages about the song give the correct information that it is sung to the jig "Larry O'Gaff". Another song that is usually sung to "Larry O'Gaff" is "Humours of Whiskey". The tune given for this song in the DT is "The Cork Road" or "Father O'Flynn" …I think this works okay as the two tunes are fairly similar. But "Larry O'Gaff" is more usually associated with "The Humours of Whiskey". A few songs in the DT are set to "Larry O'Gaff". One of these is the Squid Jigging Ground. I can't say whether this song is usually sung to "Larry O'Gaff", but I listened to the midi and it is the tune I was looking for. One tune may have several names, and more than one tune may be called by a particular name. But I would agree that "Haste to the Wedding", "Father O'Flynn" and "Larry O'Gaff" are the names commonly associated with the tunes so-called in the DT. My quibble is which songs they are paired with, especially in the case of "Making Babies by Steam". I hope this will serve to alert Dick, Susan, Joe to a needed correction. I am thinking of doing a DT study thread on "Making Babies by Steam", though everything you need to know and more is in the "Daniel O'Connell & His Steam Engine" thread. This DT tune correction thread could be used by others who have noticed any discrepancies in the DT sound files.

Subject: RE: DT tune corrections From: Scabby Douglas Date: 20 Jun 02 - 07:02 AM A useful correction, philippa. I am sure that those in charge of such things will take care of it soon. Cheers Steven |

Subject: RE: DT tune corrections From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:35 PM I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree with 'Guest' as I don't think the mis-read letters in the DT version of Mo Ghille Mear have been corrected yet - and I had mailed Dick Greenhaus personally a couple of years ago as well as giving corrections in a thread. But i'm straying from the topic ... this is a thread to try to alert the managers to TUNE problems in the DT. |

Subject: RE: DT tune corrections From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Jun 02 - 01:58 PM Hi, Philippa - part of the idea of DTStudy threads is to make DT corrections immediately available to everybody. Can you start one on this song and work it up? If you can't post the tune with MIDITEXT, e-mail it to me or MMario. Click here for a link to "Larry O'Gaff" in the ABC Tune Finder. -Joe Offer (click to e-mail)- |

Subject: RE: DT tune corrections From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 20 Jun 02 - 03:43 PM I don't have sheet music. If you contact Leeder, he has Edith Fowkes book that the song is in (see the thread I mentioned). But you already HAVE a midi of Larry O'Gaff playing on several other DT tunes! Didn't I make that clear? |

Subject: RE: DT tune corrections From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 21 Jun 02 - 10:55 AM I glanced at some DT threads and the idea seems to be to assemble different versions of one song in one place and to give references to published sources and sound recordings (bibliography and discography). I don't see them being used for correcting ERRORS in the DT. I had been thinking of starting a DT study about Daniel O'Connell's Steam Engine / Making Babies By Steam but all the information is already in the thread - with very little chitchat. The main problem is the search engine - although the song in the DT is entitled "Making Babies By Steam", I can't find it on the alphabetical DT list and nor by doing a search of "Making Babies" or "Babies By Steam". A search for "Daniel O'Connell gives me both threads and DT. But if I click at the DT version for forum discussions, I get one message for a thread about nonsense songs to dance tunes. No link to the two threads which contain lyrics, under the title "Daniel O'Connell's Steam Engine". If the clickie at the DT page sent people to the relevant thread, they'd have plenty of background info. I don't want to spend time copying sets of lyrics and having to add in the line breaks again. I just wanted the tune corrected and Joe Offer has now been duly alerted. There is a minor error in the transcription - "''An Buachaill_n Donn'" , "Buachaill_n" should read "Buachaillí". It's looking to me as if making corrections isn't the function of the DT study threads. (?) Back to the other subject of this thread: does anyone else have an opinion on changing the tune for "Humours of Whiskey" from "Father O'Flynn" to "Larry O'Gaff"? Or advice regarding tunes of any other DT songs? |
