Does anyone know anywhere that fits this bill? We are based in the Midlands UK and fancy a weekend away?

Check out the Whittlebury Song & Ale thread - sounds like the answer to your prayers! Unfortunately, it's not till the end of September, but do get in touch if you want to know more.

Have a look at the festival listing at fRoots (You can save it onto your own computer for later browsing at leisure - that's what I do). Amongst the delights for the coming weekend (June 28-30) are The Four Fools at Chorley, Leigh-on-Sea as mentioned by Kevin, The Nailers' Moot at Belper, a charity festival at Digby (Lincs) and quite a few more. Many have web sites linked from the listing, those that don't have contact telephone numbers usually.

How about The olde Dungeon Ghyll at top of Langdale Valley in the lakes? Camping on the National Trust Campsite? There is real ale and often a bit of music, good scenery and all that. Has anyone been to the Nailers Moot at Belper? What is it like? Was it you in ALchester?

Thanks Nutty, was at Alcester, and can see Beverley Minster from Mum's flat, so would not be allowed to camp (or drink!) just need a Helmsley monthly! We are booked for Shellbacks and Foxs most weekends until August an it is then that we wanted to get away with no respsonsibilities! Yes Janey that was me at Alcester it was a good do but I didn't get time to sit and sing in a singaround:-( Thank you for reminding me about the Old Dungeoen Ghyll, I went there in my first life 20 years ago when I wasn't into folk- Do they still have an Irish Wolfhound?

Come to our little party at Squilver, in the hills of South Shropshire. Singing, playing, dancing Saturday afternoon and evening, communal breakfast on Sunday followed by pub session (and it fits your time frame). Big Nev's Ale, brewed down the road in Bishops Castle. Camping and a bit of indoor space available as well. It's a private do, usually 60 or so people, many of whom were at the Bishops Castle festival the other weekend. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you more details.

There's usually a session every Saturday night at the Three Stags, possibly the best (and smallest!) pub ever. That's at Wardlow Mires in the Peak District. Very popular with climbers and walkers. And there's a campsite just alongside which costs £1 to the farmer who owns the field (not much in the way of facilities, just a single toilet and a basin with cold water, but for £1 you can't really argue). There's better campsites further away, but it's a big bonus to be able to drink what you like, especially at the 3 Stags which has incredible beer.

A page from a fan.

Graham.

6th July, Mariners Arms, Rainham, Kent folk ale day. 7th July 55th birthiversary of the Canopus (pub) ROchester named after the Short bros plane - the pub used to be the works pub - with folk 'n'stuff.

Camping more of a problem but if you are interested I can check with the people doing the Mariners. Pub has a green patch and might play ball!

Don't know what part of the Midlands you're in, but Cathy Lesurf & friends are running a festival at Thoresby Park near Ollerton (north Notts) Friday & Saturday 5 & 6 July - "the world in one county." From memory it's £15 (£2 for kids) and a nominal charge for camping. If you're interested in this one, semd me a personal message and I'll give you Cathy's email address. (Tickets, and maybe some details, are available from Nottingham Playhouse - 0115 9419419.)

On a somewhat larger scale there's the annual Fairport Convention reunion at Cropredy, 8-10 August. I wouldn't be surprised if Cathy's on the bill there too. The Cambridge Folk Festival (August 1-4) has the most spectacular line-up, as usual - all days sold out.

Mr Happy, assuming you mean the one in the Peaks, I don't know. I've not been there for ages now, not since I posted that. Last I heard it was fairly quiet - the climbers and walkers who used to go there don't seem to turn up as much any more, and there aren't as many musicians either. Summer's usually busier though, so just see. I'm planning a trip up there with a friend sometime in the summer, so I guess I'll find out. The beer will still be on, and the room will still be free, at least - the only question is whether you'll be on your own or whether there'll be other people there as well.

Graham.

Hi Mr Happy!
Try the Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival on 9 to 11 Jan 2004. Its free and there is loads of fringe singing/music. Not sure about camping or caravanning though. I put my campervan in the car park of the Boat Inn.
"Dancing and singing, bell ringing ...!"

Not sure ... I am usually elsewhere during the weekend. There's indoor camping but no mention of anything outdoors.

Here's the brochure. There's more info on this thread and a few people who would be able to tell you.

You are very welcome to join us at the Fox and Hounds, Bridestowe on Dartmoor on the 14/15/16 May. Excellent campsite, owned by the pub, a bunk house for indoor camping, an Irish landlord who loves having us there and, best of all, some seriously good singing. Small but very friendly.

I don't know that I'd want to camp (in a tent) in March, but it would be OK in the caravan with a power hook-up for the radiator. Mind you some of the sites we've been on can be pretty muddy and it can be fun trying to get the caravan of the site again !

Over midsummer, there's always the Folkmob Knockholt weekend - I usually end up making a homebrew for it - and anyway "The Tally Ho" is only just 10 minutes down the lane.

March 26-28 The National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonnington Leicestershire is the only place to be (I'll be there:-).
And it's straight up the M42 from Brum. It's on the Nottinham University School of Horticulture campus and they have camping.
If it's too cold for camping, the singing in the students union bar has been known to continue throughout the night(s).

More info here

Dave.
