Subject: Xrossing the Border-ME to MI to ME From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Jun 02 - 05:13 PM Just got back from a trek out to Michigan from Maine to help an old friend celebrate his marriage. I had heard wild reports of long waits at the border crossings at Buffalo and Port Huron, and the route is definitely more pleasant and shorter via Ontario. I checked the internet and determined that the tie-ups for cars were supposed to be more like 20 minutes and was pleased to find out that the waits were in fact 10 to 15 minutes, with no inspection of my van. I did come prepared with my passport and other ID, and I did admit that I was transporting a banjo but they appeared not to be alarmed. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

We'll probably be going from Vermont to Montana and back, later in the summer, and are interested in any and all alternatives to the Chicago Mess. Also thinking of I-90 through Ohio, but turning north when we hit Indiana, stopping for an hour or two in Lansing at Elderly (leaving our credit cards locked in the car), then north to the Mac bridge and west across the Yoop. Might be just as fast, if Chicago is still Under Construction. Peter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Xrossing the Border-ME to MI to ME From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Jun 02 - 10:18 AM Peter- the Ontario route from Buffalo to Lansing saves at least an hour over the Ohio route and is much more scenic. I took the less traveled Lewiston-Queenston bridge crossing in Niagra City, cruised up the QEW to Hamilton, took 403 through Burlington and then west to 401, continued on 401 to just past London where I took 402 to Sarnia/Port Huron, and then I-69 to Lansing and Elderly's where...$$$$$$$ but ;-))))) There are some tricky exits and it's good to have an alert navigator, and once you've stopped at Elderly's you'll have a new set of CD's (Joel Mabus and Kitty Donohoe) to keep you awake for the rest of the trek.
