Subject: Furry Lewis CD Eaten by Mean CD PLayer From: Bobert Date: 29 Jun 02 - 10:18 PM Danged! The Blueslady sent me Furry Lewis's "In His Prime, 1927-28" that she had made fir me and so I stuck it in my 6month old 6 CD carousel CD player. Well, on the second song it just quit. Hmmmmmmmm? Well, I couldn't get anything to play and I also couln't get the slot where Mr Lewis was last seen to come around where I could see if he was still there. So I said, "Heck with it" and came back the following day to fool with it. Well, I put one CD in and to my astonishment it played. Since then I haven't tried multiple CD's or trying to play anything in the slot where Furry Lewis demised. My question is: Where did Furry go? The danged CD is in the machine somewhere. How can it play with him stuck in there is my second question though I am less concerned about the answer to that one as I am the third question. How do I get him back out? Disclaimer: I swear I did not make any of this story up. Bobert |

Subject: RE: Help: Furry Lewis CD Eaten by Mean CD PLayer From: rangeroger Date: 29 Jun 02 - 11:37 PM Well, Bobert my friend,You come to the right place. My CD carousal has refused to play and eaten a CD. The play refusals were all on homemade CD copies. I could eventually convince the player to play it by using the remote and tell it which track to play and once it knows that it will scan the rest of the tracks. Oh,but you don't even have he CD. In order to ascertain the degree of difficulty of retrieving the CD,I went to my handy, dandy Time-Life Books "Complete FIX-IT YOURSELF" Manual. Now I know you have certain degree of mechanical aptitude as you are a Karmann-Ghia owner. Which brings up somethig I've been wanting to talk to about. I'm a Karmann-Ghia owner. Got two of em.Bought the '70 in running condition for$950 from Jim's Jalopies in Wallace,Idaho. # days later a friend says " I see you're driving a Ghia, got any spare parts?" When I said,"No." He said, "want some?" He then gave a '69 that had been setting in his front yard for 14 years. Anyway, back to the now digested CD. The book section on CD players only covered single-CD players. So I would have to say, Take it to a local eletronics repair, have the man who knows what he's doing take apart, while warrantying the player will operate in a like-new fashion and the CD itself will be unharmed. 2 weeks later you will hand the man $100, he will give Furry Lewis with a major scratch down the playing surface, and the player will never again work right. The tech will have also left town by the time you can get back to the store. OR You take it apart yourself, carefully removing the CD from the innards,( You can only blame yourself for the scratch), picking up the remaining pieces and throw the entire mess in the trash can. Then go to the local Wally'sWorld or Costco and buy new o with 10x the features for $100 Unless you give them to the mentally-ill 16 year old and he can put it all back together. In fact, he should probably do the whole operation. rr |

I think I'll try my hand at the operation. Lets see, I'll need my handy Karmann Ghia tool kit which consists of a hammer and a bigger hammer... ahhhhhh... Hey, went to sell the wiper motor and assembly from the '69 parts car? Ir will be 12 volt and have cap screws on the pivots rather than the freaded pinch bolts. If you're interested PM me and we'll work out the details. Bobert |

Subject: RE: Help: Furry Lewis CD Eaten by Mean CD PLayer From: rangeroger Date: 04 Jul 02 - 06:06 PM Bobert, ole buddy, just to show you that I'm not completely oblivious and indifferent to the plight of your Furry Lewis CD, I allowed my CD player to eat a CD today. I managed to retrieve it and thought you might want to know my technique. The CD ended up blocking the carousal tray so it couldn't close. I don't know the make of yours but my player is a Teac 5-disc carousal. First with the power on, open the carousal. Then turn the power off. This should leave the tray sticking out. Unplug everything and place the player on the work surface of your choice.Remove the metal cover.Mine had 7 little screws holding it on.Reach in,remove the missing CD, and put the cover back on.Plug it all back in and you are ready to go.Took me a total of about 5 minutes. Turns out the CD wasn't really worth the effort except that it was blocking the carousal. I had bought it while purchasng copius quantities of sugar and caffeine at a Circle K Stop-and-Rob in Salem,Oregon. The title was"And Then There Was Bass". Being a beginner bass guitar player I figured I could learn a few licks off it. I really should have seen the Parental Advisory label for explicit content on it. Yep, it was all Hip-Hop, designed to get the coils really moving in a sub-woofer.So stuck it in the microwave for 5 seconds anthe light show was better than the music. rr |

Subject: RE: Help: Furry Lewis CD Eaten by Mean CD PLayer From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Jul 02 - 06:14 PM I remember the advertising blurb for CD's... won't scratch, stick or jump... they even drove a car over it and played it..... If I had a new player for every CD I have that's scratched, jumps or sticks..... I'd have a lot of CD players. Never had one eaten, but have had a particular machine that just refuses point blank to play homemade CDs, and another CD that is allegedly OK to play in the UK, works OK in my mates' player, but won''t in our identical model.....
