Peter Gabriel organizes these festivals in various places around the world. One is a 3-day festival in August in Redmond, WA. Their website is supposed to be www.womad.org, but there's some problem with the link right now, so I can' get through to their website. From: GUEST,Sonja Date: 08 Jul 02 - 02:57 PM BTW, Lane, you just missed the big Blues Festival in Waterfront Park in Portland, OR over the July 4th weekend. It's a four day event with all sorts of blues artists performing and fireworks on the 4th. Admission is real cheap--$5 plus 2 cans of food for the food bank is the suggested donation, I think--, and folks can get in free by doing some grunt work for the festival. Both Seattle and Portland have concerts at their zoos on Wednesday, Thursday, and, I think, Friday nights during the summer. On Wed. and Thurs. in Portland, the admission is just the zoo admission ($7.50?), but some of the Friday night acts (e.g., the Chieftains) cost $20, I think, and tend to get sold out ahead of time. I've heard Tish Hinojosa, Maura O'Connell, and Miriam Makeba on Thursday nights (folk/bluegrass night) at the zoo in Portland. Sometimes if you don't get there before 7:00 (when the show starts), you may not get in, since the events are so popular. If you go earlier, you can see the zoo and then the concert for one zoo admission price.

It is a wonderful little festival with a diversified program of musics and arts. The festival is centered around the Yakima Museum on Teiton Dr. But there is an abundance of venues throughout the city. Two pubs near the downdown area, They have me doing a gig at Tim's basement at 11 PM Friday night and at 8 PM at the Garden Stage Sat. These are both new venues for me but I am looking forward to the festival and also will plan on sneeking away Sat,driving about 40 minutes north to Ellensburg to gather with Jen Ellens Catsters. There is another great festival in Sept at Tri-Cities WA called Tumbleweeds Music Festival. Labor Day Week-end. That is another great time but competes with Bumpershoot in Seattle the same weekend. Almost forgot, I/m not sure where one might camp, you cannot camp or even park at the festival site. You might want to do a campground search for the Yakima area. Mudjack |

That's a big 3-day music festival at the Seattle Center, but it's paid admission each day, all sorts of music, and as far as I know has no participatory music (like NW Folklife Festival has). Here's the website for the <a href="http://www.portlandfolklore.org/">Portland Folklore Society.</a> They sponsor a song circle/potluck on the 2nd Sat. eve. of each month, an open mike once a month, and an coffeehouse once a month, as well as a smaller song circle every Monday. If you go to their website you can get locations for each event. Seattle Song Circle meets every Sunday night from 7:30 to about 11:00 PM. Don't have their website handy, but you can PM me if you'd like it. I think it's Seattle Folklife Society that sponsors it. In Seattle, Wit's End Coffeehouse and Bookstore hosts jams on Friday nights 7:00 to 9:30 (Irish, bluegrass, old timey, and Scandihoovian, on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Fridays, respectively) and a songwiters' circle on Tuesdays. The Stillife CafŽ (also in the Fremont area, near Dusty Strings) also has a folk open mike. There's a bluegrass jam at the Grateful Bread Coffeehouse near the U. W. district from 1 to 4 PM on the 4th Sunday every month (except May, because of Folklife Festival). |

Tim's at 11 PM was a no show on the part of the audience and due primarily to the fact is near impossible to find. Not marked from the street and is 3 miles away from the Museum festival site. Saturday at the festival was an 8 o'clock evening next to the big stage that was blasting out heavy drums and electric guitars and some "good old boys" singing and playing some redneck rock. After talking to the sound man, we decided to throw in the towel and call it a week end. Which means I drove 7 hours (both ways) and not sing one song for their festival. Sounds like they need to dump a few venues or get someone who can draw an audience.Most of the stages were lightly attended. I hope Yakima was good to you, it is still a nice little festival.You would have snjoyed the NW gathering at JenEllens. Very much like sitting around the campfire. Mudjack |

From: GUEST Date: 16 Jul 02 - 02:16 AM Mudjack, I, too, am sorry that we didn't connect... you're right, the festival needs a little better organization, but then, I can hardly criticize such a big effort... they do pretty well, for the most part, but I did see a few glitches that were unfortunate. The heat didn't help! I had a ball, anyway... caught some nice sets on Saturday and a few on Sat night at Bob's. I had wanted to see Reilly and Maloney, who I greatly enjoyed (I'm and old folky and a fan of Tom Paxton, they do some of his stuff and I enjoy their harmonies a lot). I saw them again on Sunday AM - the scheduling was messed up, stage not ready, but it all came together and they were great. There were several other acts that I really enjoyed and I left the festival with some nice new inspiration for a few new songs that I can try to learn to play. Always looking for something new. Yes, I was surprised at the light attendance, but it was sure easy to get a front row seat! I'm looking for more, similar, get togethers in the Portland to Seattle area.. .I'm in Longview... so please let me know of any and, certainly, if you will be playing somewhere, I'd love to hear you! It is located about 20 to 23 miles due north from White Salmon WA.and easy to find, they set out signs, besides being an art festival, they have music of all sorts throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday.They have me scheduled for Sunday at 11 AM. The festival is quiet and laid back but offer some real nice artwork and the music is much better than you might expect at such a small festival. I'm not sure where you live but that might work for you. Of course that is a conflict schedule with Barbara's farm gathering. That is west of Salem OR and gets my vote as being a great time. It is Portland Folklore Society and Mudcat combined gathering. If you make it to Troutlake Sunday, be sure to stop and say howdy. Mudjack |

Those no-show audience folks missed a great show, IMO. Lane, you might ask Mousethief if there's anything happening in the Tacoma area. (Maybe I should rephrase that. ...Then, again, ...) If you're into bluegrass, there's the Wintergrass Festival in Olympia, but that's in the winter (Duh...). Rangeroger said there's a jam session --bluegrass, I believe--in Carson, WA, one Monday evening a month. What's that--about a 90-minute drive from Longview? It's close to the Columbia Gorge.

There is two approaches to doing this festval, you can pay to camp there, tents RV's or what have you or you can park outside, walk in and jam camp. Find a good jam and settle in. Or you can pay and see the bands in a fenced in arena. I live in the area and find jams and there are lots of them and usuall kick in a few bucks donation to their kitty. Some jams are Bluegrass Nazis and some are just plain folks that sing anything and everything. I won't be performing there but will be there singing and playing at the camping area. Genie,that Carson Jam is every Monday evening at the PUD building in Carson. 7 PM. It is located on the Wind River Hwy. 5 blocks past the stop sign(fire station)on the right. It is an open jam and all music is encouraged except electrified instruments. We will have two couples at our place that week end but I'm sure you can toss a tent, sleeping bag or whatever and you can join us. They have RV's and will park them near our place. This is funny to me, having lived in Astoria for many years - the Finn capital of the west, I think... they spilled over to Naselle.... I have an assortment of Finn jokes, but I'll leave them be! As to the Tango - somehow I doubt it... all the Finns I know are far too subborn to do anything other than the tradional dance, if that.....but I can tell you that you should never take a Finn fishing... they eat the bait! Toledo, Oregon is located on US 20 between Corvallis and Newport, just 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It is 3 hours southwest of Portland ( south on Interstate 5 to Oregon hiway 34 west to Philomath and then west on US 20 to Toledo.......Balladeer Merritt Herring from Portland will be there as well as our own Mudjack a.k.a. Jack Roberts.....Many more local acts from Corvallis, Eugene and Salem as wel as Toledo....Andes music with panpipes and vocals ....old time fiddle music......Traditional ballads by Earl and Kay Laver...and much more....It's a free festival on an outdoor stage....The annual Toledo Antique Fair will be included with many booth lining the main street of good old Toledo......Our stage will be close to the food booths...Hope you can all give us a try,....Frank of Toledo |
