Subject: Thank you Thank you! MASUTO
From: Socorro
Date: 16 Jul 02 - 03:06 PM

I want to post this huge thanks to masuto for directing me to a source for Ruth Davis tapes. I just received them in the mail, and have only heard the 1st 2 cuts, but i am beside myself with excitement. WYSIWYG, if you are not on the mailing list for Malaco Records - their catalog is a "must have" - phone 1-800-272-7936

I have been on he Mudcat a very long time. I have seen every type one can imagine. But I have never seen anyone as willing to help out as this person. Masato..........thank you. This place is so much better for your presence, and we are blessed to have you. I hope we can meet one day and sing a song or two together.

All the very best,

Mick

A photocopy recently arrived from Masato in Japan, music I had been looking for for quite a while. The man's speed and depth of knowledge is matched by his kindness. And he also provides a yardstick to measure our own puny attempts against: it gives be inordinate pleasure if I ever find a bit of information before Masato gets to it (it doesnt happen all that often!).Truly the man is a miracle.
PS: Masato, what's the track-listing for the new Mudcat CD?

Dear Masato: Please forgive me for spelling your name wrong - and many thanks to Mudcatters for gently making me aware of that!

My flimsy excuse is that i dashed the post off in a hurry, in my great excitement, without checking your name - as someone once said to me, "haste is of the devil!" (metaphorically speaking).

Thanks to all!

He's so quiet about it, too. There's a lot he does "behind the scenes" so to speak. Last year when I asked him for translation and ordering help for a chewing gum made in Japan which shares our surname, "LaFrance," (I wanted to send some to Roger's siblings in their Christmas cards) he very kindly went to his local supermarket, picked up a box of it and sent it over! I was thrilled and very grateful. The family was delighted and the gum is addictive:-)...very tasty, made from a pear. They also make many other products from it, including ice cream.

Thanks, again, Masato, for that AND all of the invaluable music scholarship.

Hey, maybe I can offer something for a change. I just picked up a two CD set of old black gospel and spirituals from OldTime Radio.net. The tracks are all from old 78's. Not pleasant listening particularly, but a real resource for old spirituals. I bet Masato already has them, though... maybe someone else is interested and doesn't have them...

There are two people who, by posting to any thread of mine, make me feel that that thread is genuinely worthwhile. One of them is Masato, and the other is Malcolm Douglas.

If I ever start a thread on which both of them appear, it will be a peak Mudcat moment for me, and I will consider myself to have done well indeed.

Hi Masato ... You know, when you bring up a new thread to see if there is anything of interest in it, one of the things I do is to scan the names of the contributors. If your name is listed, I ALWAYS bring it up. You are a great resource for us, and obviously a very generous person. I would like to add my name to the growing list of folks that really do appreciate you. Thank you ... Bob

When I read his entries, I always realize that in addition to knowing a lot about folkmusic, Masato has incredible skills with search engines. This is a real resource in my world--a university research library. His searching appears to be very intuitive, something one can't just learn. Mudcatters are lucky to have him using those skills in their behalf.

Dead on, Brother Thieme. About the only negative thing I can say about our Masato is that he is so quick, so knowledgable, such a great searcher, that the rest of us always get beat to the punch by this miracle man. But don't slow down, Masato. You are providing impetus for the rest of us to improve our skills. Don't change a thing, sir. And here is hoping you remain a Mudcatter for many years to come.

Just looked at Masato's posts. The first listed, (Masato as Guest), was on "Froggy Went A-Courtin'," which coincidentally, is the subject of a current thread. "Scandalize My Name" and "Old Lang Syne" also were in the first five posts and are already an indication of the variety.
Look at the search results; is there anyone interested in songs and song history that he hasn't helped?

A tribute to Masato's ferreting brilliance is that sometimes I see a request that I know I have some information, but it's not right at my finger tips. Rather than going rooting around trying to find it, I think "wait a day or two to see if Masato comes up with it". Invariably he does. He's an amazing combination of speed and thoroughness.

.........Hitotsubashi University is a national university and the only university in Japan specializing in humanities and social science. It was first privately established in 1875 as Institute for Business Training. To meet the demands of the the time, its specific purpose was to educate businessmen who would be the driving force in the establishment of the modern Japanese society. The faculty of economics was founded as a department in 1949 when the University was renamed as Hitotsubashi University. In 1952, the graduate school of economics was also started. .........

Blown his cover? No, he'd have answered if anyone had asked. *G*

Masato's first big involvement here was to help me with the spirituals. I, too, have received more than my fair share of Masato's extraordinary willingness to work toward a good project. If I were not building a new folk community here in my backyard, I would already have posted a HUGE amount of stuff he helped me with-- but it awaits a pause in the pace of work here, to complete some formatting, etc., and finding a good place to "hang" it. Let's just say that when you see it, you will know that it was Masato who made it possible, although I am sure he would not see it that way.
