well, jenny, all you have to do is look at some of the threads, say, perhaps one starting with ARRGH!, and you will see how accepting these cats are!! i think that these are some of the sweetest people that i've never seen!

Welcome Jenny and Allan. (BTW, Allan, I got your email. I will be putting in a page of oil paintings that are more of the big horizon of Montana feeling, inspired by my mother's photography from the 30's and 40's. Much like the old photo of my Dad in the 20's with his Lincoln, if you saw the 'hat' page. Check back again.)
Relating here to the thread about why we gravitate to the Mudcat, I think this has become a community of people who are generally very respectful of other's opinions. I like the way people feel safe enough here to open up with personal stories. Most other forums that I have seen tend to make me 'lurk' rather than join in as often as I do here.

Thanks for all the comments re lurking. I am stepping out of my comfort zone and adding a few comments here and there, if only my thoughts. I must say this is the only site I've found where I can existentualize a bit and the vast majority of 'Cats don't sing the Outer Limites theme.

Ya gotta admit. It is an ugly sounding word. It sounds a little sinister and a little like a word spoken into a toilet bowl. I have to agree, though, there are some folks who are, (shall we say, more vocal?) here who have a wealth of information to share. Likewise, there are many who stand offstage and listen. One of my favorite quotes, and I hope I have it right, is from Winston Churchill who said, "They also serve, who stand and wait." I am sure that at some point someone will discuss a subject or ask a question that one of the folks who are waiting in the wings will have a comment for or the answer to. Then they will hopefully step out and have their moment in the spotlight.

Hi, Jenny - the term "lurking" wasn't invented here at Mudcat - it's used all over the Internet to describe people who read but don't speak. I think there's a certain colorful humor in the term. But now that you've posted something, you are no longer a "lurker." See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
The next step is for you to figure out that if you've played and sung folk and blues for over 30 years, there's probably lots of stuff you know that people here would like to hear about.

Ever since I read the term "lurking" in an earlier thread, I've felt kind of peculiar about going into the Mudcat. I have this odd feeling that someone out there knows I'm reading threads but not always adding my two cents. It sounds like one is a "stalker." I've played and sung folk and blues for 30+ years, but I'm realizing that my knowledge of that genre is miniscule compared to that of individuals like Art and Joe, whose threads and thread comments I thoroughly enjoy. So, for me, it's an education that's been a long time coming. I do add a comment here and there and will continue to do so, although not as often as others. I do, therefore, find the term "lurking" ugly.
