I am, but I won't be there until Monday 'cause I'm going via Cambridge. I hope I get there in time for John McCusker's gig at the Ham, as I expect this will be one of the highlights of the festival for me.

Judging by responses on a number of other Sidmouth threads I expect that there'll be a lot of others from these parts there as well.

I'll be there stewarding with Mary-Jane - running a team doing a market research exercise for the Arts Council and the Association of Festival Organisers on cultural tourism (which may result in better funding for subsequent festivals). Anyone who cares to participate is welcome - it merely involves a short questionnaire followed by a feeling of having 'done yer bit'.
So, if propositioned by someone with a clipboard and a cheesy grin, don't flee!
And, of course, in the Middle Bar and elsewhere when not out and about armed with clipboards and cheesy grins.

I was going on Saturday until I found out that the cricket club is not being allowed to have tents pitched on the boundary this year. That lets me and my friend out. They can only have 10 motorhomes this year as well. I bet the rugby club has been similarly clobbered with restrictions. Several friends from the area were going to meet up and pitch together so I guess none of us will be supporting Siddy this year.
I may pop down from Letchlade on Sunday or Monday and see what's going on and try and meet up with some of you before driving home.

And don't forget, if you are propositioned about cultural toiurism, to get in your bit about how the Public Entertainment Licence system detracts enormously from the pleasure of tourism in England for anyone who likes live music.

Actually, I think there are valid criticisms to be made of all the festivals. I would agree with the above guest that there is a lot of fuss over Sidmouth every year that I think is unwarranted too. It has always seemed to me like a festival "old home week" for aging white English hippies, not a festival showcasing the best and most innovative musicians in folk.

Actually, its the same tired old list of acts year after year, with a token "young" band thrown in here and there, in the hopes that the old folk's teenagers will stop complaining about being forced to be there.

Despite all the drawbacks of Cambridge (size, crowds, cost, etc) I'd take it any day over Sidmouth.

I DID go to Siddy after Cotswold Capers. Cotswold was GREAT FUN :-) I'd reccommend it to any singer.
I had a damn good sing in the Middle Bar on shanty night and in the Theatre Bar.
Busking on the prom was great fun.
It was very hard on the feet, all the venues are a long way from each other when, like me, you don't walk so well.
If guest was bored why doesn't he try Broadstairs, maybe he'll be more interested, especially if he's a singer or player.

What did you think you were attending?

The rest of youse - we went on Saturday and had a very nice time, thank you. I've typed elsewhere about the Witchmen morris team and the later stage invasion. I believe the phrase that I used was, "Marvellous".

I stand by that.

Action for Music

The EFDSS has funded a leaflet to be distibuted at Sidmouth by some hard - working folk who have created Action for Music and which has cause a tremendous response from those attending the Festival. Well I got there eventually and had bloody good time!!! Also got me a £15 fine in the Anchor Bar, but they'll have to wait for the Reunion on Feb 21st 2003 for that!

And it was just for one song!!!

Regretably, did not see Mr Harris' accordion go up in smoke on Sunday, I was at home with the Mudcat song room open at the time, honest guv, it's a frame up if anyone says different!
