Hi, Ameoba records and Rasputin records both on the infamous Telegraph have a very wide selection of quality used cds and even their brand new cds are very reasonable at around 12-14 bucks (around 8 bucks less than wherehouse)! Ameoba has a good celtic section and folk section. You can find pretty much anything there (and what you can't find, they can order for you for pretty cheap). I wish you good hunting!

The above mentioned are great stores! I got a very nice CD of Tommy Johnson's 1928 - 1929 recordings from Down Home when out there this May.

There used to be an even greater store in San Francisco called Jack's Record Cellar. It was in the "Western Addition" but I can't recall exactly where. He had the most fantastic collection of old records I have ever seen and his prices were within reason. 78's, 33-1/3's, 45's and tapes and even some cylinders!

Jack (as I called him, that may not have been his real name) was a true San Francisco character. He had been a soldier of fortune of sorts during the 1930's, in Central America. I don't know if he is still alive (possibly not) or if his store is still in existance. If it is still around it is well worth the search and a visit.

Jack's is indeed still there, at 254 Scott (corner of Scott and Page). You can also try the following: Aquarius records (one of S.F.'d oldest stores) at 1055 Valencia Street, Saturn records on College Avenue in the Rockridge area of Oakland (very nice area, short BART ride from the city), Groove Merchant at 687 Haight Street, and finally Open Mind at 342 Divisadero in S.F.

There is definitely a great selection out here and Jack's is probably your best bet for Folk. Amoeba and Rasputins are good, but more for the 60's and beyond. Though that is only my opinion.

Some of the best stores are hidden jewels in neighbourhoods though, I would just walk around the Haight, Western Addition and Bernal Heights to name a few good places. And of course the people at the above mentioned stores would have some ideas.

tsk, tsk, tsk! using the thread to send a PM! Tell yer darlin' G'pa sends his love and thanks for the info on Jack's. We used to live near there (at Scott and Waller, before you were born) and Jack's is still at the original location, Scott and Page! Amazing!

Next time I'm out to 'Frisco, I'll be sure to take a trip there. Jack's used to have a couple of records featuring an obscure Milwaukee jazz violin player name of Ted Meisenheimer. He was listed on a Decca recording, "Royal Garden Blues" by Jack Teagarden. Maybe Jack's still has that 78 recording!

Jack's Record Cellar is at 254 Scott st. Norman Pierce, the former owner, died in 1983.

Another place to check is Green Apple Books in the Richmond District. They have a wonderful record section down the street from the main store.
Amoeba Records has a second store now, in the Haight-Asbury District, where it joins the panhandle of Golden Gate Park.
