Subject: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 Aug 02 - 06:53 PM My lad and some of his mates keep trying to talk me into being an NPC at some of their LARP dungeons. I would like to have a go. I quite fancy being a bard of some sort. I have already said that fighting is out of the question and I would like to be a bard/mage type character that will answer some of the playing characters question. Any suggestions from anyone? Anyone already done it? Cheers Dave the (not in character) Gnome |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Aug 02 - 07:09 PM Would I be correct in assuming that you are talking about some kind of multi-participant, interactive, computer based, role-playing game , Dave? Murray |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Chip2447 Date: 19 Aug 02 - 02:54 AM Go for it Dave, be the bard minstrel who performs in the pub. The referee/gamemaster will surely make you a fairly important feature in the game. Who else but a minstrel sage has the tidbits of ancient lore that he has gathered over countless e'ens spent in taverns, road houses and inns. What word from the north, the east, the west or the south, what NEWS have you to share with us. Chip2447(who not only is a bard of sorts, but plays one in D&D also) |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Cllr Date: 19 Aug 02 - 03:47 AM Murrray Live action role play used to mean exactly that dressing up and running around with rubber weapons. I used to larp with Treasure Trap back in the eighties before it folded and at an off shoot started with Pete Garner at the Chislehurst Caverns, ocasionally I went to Broadsword for a while. Dave, any ideas on what system of combat they are using? Some of the priest cast are also non-fighting (compensated buy having a greater spell capacity) if they dont have a specifc bard class taking one of these can usally be adapted without having to change the system. If your only going to NPC and from what you say you don't want to get physical, the only way to stop a hack and slash party from attacking the NPC is to give the NPC some powerful defence spells which make it clear that attacking the NPC is a one way ticket to sudden death. Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: HuwG Date: 19 Aug 02 - 05:07 AM Damn. There I was thinking that this referred to "Drunk and disorderly" folkers; now there's a group with lots of welcoming members. |

Subject: Thread Name Game From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 02 - 02:11 PM Dave, I, too, thought the D&D in your thread title was police shorthand for "drunk and disorderly." (Kinda wondered why drunk, disorderly folk musicians was a rare enough phenomenon to warrant a thread.) Genie |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Cllr Date: 19 Aug 02 - 03:45 PM Clinton I admit to being a local tory politician, why would I worry about admitting that I used to go LARP'ing?Cllr |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: MMario Date: 19 Aug 02 - 04:42 PM I'd probably LARP if I could be an NPC - but the only one I've looked into (and was reachable) wanted as much money to be an NPC as to be a player. Ren-faire is close to LARPing and they PAY me... |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 19 Aug 02 - 04:55 PM LARPers are 2nd from the bottom, beaten only by Furries on the Geek Food Chain... At least they are in my book... I'l rather filk sing or listen to a fanfic writer read his trash than put up with LARPers... |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Edain Date: 19 Aug 02 - 08:34 PM D+D is great fun, I'd throughly recommend playing an NPC and then, if you like it, moving onto a PC. Unfortunately, my character is a fighter so I can't help you much with bards etc although if you want I can scan the releant pages out of the 3E manual for you. |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 19 Aug 02 - 08:35 PM Clinton: Hey, some of my best friends are LARP'ers...I don't have any problem with 'em, mostly. The only thing they do to annoy me is that at cons they tend to cluster around in groups blocking the hotel hallways. So I gotta wield my guitar case (hardshell, of course...) as a weapon to clear 'em out of the way on my way to the filk room! 8-) -- Gary |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Yorkshire Tony Date: 20 Aug 02 - 12:31 AM I played D&D for many years but finally gave up when the revisions became too frequent and too complex. I still have a druid in a sacred grove somewhere. It can be fun but you need a good DM to make it so - one who is immaginative and neither too generous nor too homicidal. Have fun - gnomes make good illusionists if your bard wants a sideline - you could be the complete entertainer. It is also handy to be able to just disappear if a PC becomes aggressive! |

Subject: RE: BS: D&D Folkers... From: Dave Bryant Date: 22 Aug 02 - 05:10 AM After a day knocking back pints at various festival sessions, most of us tend to be in a bit of a fantasy world. That was even more so at Sidmouth when The Bowd Farm used to sell gallons of scrumpy for abot £1.50 ! Mind you the nearest thing that I can think of for the dungeon side were thos fantastic sessions in the the cellar at Bracknell FF all those years ago. |
