Hi

I am back in New England for a while and I am looking for any regularly scheduled Shanty programs like the one I participate in at Hyde St. Pier in San Francisco.

I will be staying on Cape Cod for a while so the closer the better but I am willing to travel.

Joe

There is a singing session at Paddy Burke's in Boston on Wed. evenings. Shanty sessions, haven't found one yet. Tried starting one years ago, no interest. The last shanty session in Boston that I knew of was on board the replica of the HMS Rose called, yes the HMS Rose, probably 25 years ago. Do a forum search for more info on Paddy Burke's or e-mail me. If youdo find one could you let me know, Thanks, Happy Hunting, Barry

You might try the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum in CN; several of the working Chanteymen on the Crew there are regular Mudcat correspondants, and if anything were going on in the area they would know about it. I think they have a group known as "Forbitter", and who knows but they migh consider having an interested Pilgrim sit in on one of their jams or shindigs; it wouldn't hurt to ask! We don't seem to have a URL for them, but stick around; somebody here will put you in touch!

You didn't say how long you'll be in New England, but if you are going to be around the end of September, plan on coming up to Portsmouth (NH) for the Maritime Folk Festival, details here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~pcontrastano/folk_horizons/performers.htm

In addition, I host a Friday evening session at the Press Room, also in Portsmouth, where shanties are known to be sung.

Hope to be seeing you -- Tom

Hi,

Indeed Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT, would be a decent place to start. Shanty-singing men and women roam the grounds and can likely point you to some local watering holes. The web site is www.mysticseaport.org

By the by, I'm delighted to hear Paddy Burke's in Boston is still around. Used to hang out there something over 10 years ago. Brehan Law used to play on the weekends. It was a fine place to hear a brilliant Christy Moore or Silly Wizard cover.

Rich

How about the Griswald(?) Inn in Essex, CT, where Cliff Haslem and the Ancient Mariners have been known to thunder the roof rafters asunder. I think they do Monday nights.

Cheerily,

Joe - If you can make it up to one of the Friday sessions, and let me know ahead, I'll make sure that it will be shanty laden -- Tom

Charlie Noble et al., here's some info about Essex CT's Griswold Inn. Essex, on the Connecticut River, is somewhat northwest of Mystic (town of Stonington), where Old Mystic Seaport is located in the state's southeastern corner. But everyplace in CT is pretty close to everyplace else. (Of course we're gigantic compared to our diminutive neighbor Rhode Island.) There's also a town named Griswold; but the Griswold Inn ain't in it. Hey, in CT South Windsor is northeast of Windsor. We're Yankees y'see. :) And God bless us, every one.
