Subject: open 'C' Tuning-need chords

I've been tinkering around with the Tab to Dougie MacLean's "Caledonia" this past weekend and pulling it off reasonably well, but for the calcifying fingertips. I'm fairly familiar with DADGAD, Open "D", and Open "G", and have been able to put ballads into those tunings with the approximate "minors" where they should be. This is my first attempt at Open C and I'm not sure how to locate the appropriate minors. I'm not into just barring all the strings five or seven frets up to get the other chords I need. I'm looking for the voicings available in the first three frets. I have the "F" as 020201 and the "G" as 002023, which may not be completely accurate, but close. I stumbled around with the tuning a bit and I believe I'd found Dougie's "Bonnie Bessie Logan" with the capo off, as well as the Corries' "Jock O'Hazeldean". Its abit of trial and error using all majors. Could some one suggest the relative minor(s) in the open "C" tuning? I suppose I'm looking for the Aminor, Dminor and Eminor.

Cheers,

John

John - Try www.elmcmeen.com - He seems to have quite a few chords listed at his site. Good luck.

John

If you're experienced at playing in open G you already know most of the chord shapes you need for open C. Just move your open G chord shapes one string to the treble side of the guitar. You don't get the same chord in name, but you get the same chordal relationship (relative minor, dominant etc.).

For instance, take whatever shape you use for an Em in open G. In open C move that same shape one string to the treble side and you have an Am. Do the same with whatever shape you use for a C chord in open G and you have a Bb in open C.

Find ways to add in sone bass notes on that low C string and you're home free.

There's also the point that if you play a barre chord with your pinky three frets up on the high E string, the chord is unresolved and can serve as either major or minor. The classic Dm and Em are obtained by squishing your fingers across from the F chord you already have - use the 2nd finger (nearest the bass) to stop the low three strings, the next (third finger) stops two strings, the index finger does the E string - 222221 = Dm, move it up two frets for Em. You'll find in practice that people pick around these shapes, leaving strings open, and rarely playing the full closed chords.

Ooops!!!! Big boo-boo in my earlier post. Where I said Bb should be F, of course. Major brainfart.
