Subject: Lowell Mason's 'Meribah' ? From: Haruo Date: 31 Aug 02 - 04:21 PM There is a tune by Lowell Mason called "Meribah". The Cyber Hymnal has it as the background music (with MIDI link) for Awaked by Sinai's Awful Sound (Lordy, what a title!) among other texts. A portion of this tune is given in three Esperanto hymnals for the text "Kristo vivas" (a translation of the Swedish Kristus lever — underbara ord). The earliest (Evangelia Kantaro, 1952) calls it "Swedish melody, 1884", while the other two (Adoru kantante, 1971, and Adoru: Ekumena Diserva Libro, 2001) credit Mason with it (but don't mention anything about an arranger). So my question is, is the "Swedish melody" form what Mason composed (and the form given in The Cyber Hymnal, Lutheran Book of Worship and other English hymnals, an expansion by some arranger or editor [if so, who?]), or is the longer version what Mason wrote, and the shorter one some Swede's truncation, perhaps to fit the "Kristus lever" text? Or is the shorter version an anonymous Swedish folk melody which Mason developed into a longer hymn tune? Or what? Haruo [Leland, formerly Liland] |

Subject: RE: Help: Lowell Mason's 'Meribah' ? From: Haruo Date: 31 Aug 02 - 04:37 PM Oops. Forgot the URLs for Kristus lever/Kristo vivas. Should be Kristo vivas and Kristus lever — underbara ord. I've given each one a different MIDI, the Esperanto one is based on the melody and chords in Adoru (2001) and the Swedish one on the naked melody from Evangelia Kantaro, with four-part arrangement from the TCH MIDI. BTW, I'm also looking for the full Swedish text (my Swedish source has only three stanzas, while the Esperanto translation has five). An English translation would also be most welcome. Haruo |
