Subject: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 04:20 AM Hellllooooooo people. The time has come once again for monthly antics at chez Collinson. Last weekend proved interesting. PTH at Durty Nellies was a delightfully raucous affair. Nice to see so many catters in evidence, and was a pleasure to pop into Black Boy for a breath of fresh air. Twas an evening of song, dance, friends, and some delightfully pretty ladies...less said about that the better, eh, Smallpiper??? hehehe. Saturday was a long day playing on Lund village green...I got extremely drunk9 and lost two hours of the evening somewhere! Had to call Smallpiper on Sunday to establish where they went to. Thanks for filling me in, John! I wish to start a serious conversation about the continued location of this monthly session. Your thoughts are needed. I am increasingly unsure of the present landlady at Nellies. She was extremely shirty with me when I told her we would not be there last week. I was really quite taken aback with her attitude, considering we don't get so much as a free pint for playing there. It annoyed me intensely. I would also draw your attention to the number of signs appearing around the pub pertaining to her obvious dislike of children. This also pisses me off. They are now barred from the dart room where we hold our session. You may guess how I feel about that. I shall post more on this subject later this morning when I return from a meeting. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: ossonflags Date: 03 Sep 02 - 04:35 AM Peter, great to have started this disscussion. There are several issues to adress hear, not the least the exclusion of children. I will get back this afternoon to give some more thoughts on this, as I had large amounts of bear last night to celebrate the passing of my kidney stone (named dennis)and are slightly woozy as we speak. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 03 Sep 02 - 04:56 AM Ossonflags, can I have it please? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:04 AM Deanie Please be careful when referring to me and prety ladies in the same sentence also I have some worries about the ambiguity of "filling me in" people might get the rong idea. However, you know my thoughts on the session in question as we discussed it at length when in our cups on saturday. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: specky Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:09 AM dennis is this a new addition to the catters? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:12 AM Dennis? - where'd he come from? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: specky Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:15 AM erm one of ossonflags tubes????????? morning sweetie u ok |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:20 AM Oh that Dennis - yep I think he would make a wonderful addition to the mudcat family. I'm fine darlin' and you? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:22 AM I was thinking that it might be most ammusing if the owner of said Dennis was to start a thread introducing Dennis to the family as a new member - and see what reaction we get from the colonies......... |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: specky Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:26 AM oh yes good idea penelope would be ecstatic dont u think????.............im great and u??? u off to see cara sunday?? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:26 AM Erm, the session at Nellies. In my experience, a session can be big enough to withstand disinterest and hostility from the proprietor, but only for the short-term; eventually resentment starts to colour how one perceives the experience of actully being there. That is the point at which it often starts to become derailed. It would be a great pity to lose the chance to play at Nellies, but there are other venues and the licensee should be made aware of this fact, gently and objectively if she persists with the hostility. Perhaps she was just having a bad day, Deanmeister. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:29 AM Don't know about Sunday either Nellies or Cara far to far ahead to make plans like that. But the words possibly followed by probably do seem to spring to mind. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: specky Date: 03 Sep 02 - 05:31 AM good see u there then :-) xx |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 06:56 AM A well thought out reply, Oakley. Perhaps I'm having a bad day too. I just resent being expected to be somewhere, as you know David. We have been offered money and bear to move said session to at least two other establishments in Beverley. But, hey, lets wait and see. Incidentally, looking forward to the pyrotechnic Purple Helmet display on Hengate on sunday. What time are we likely to see the flypast, comrade Oakley? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 03 Sep 02 - 07:26 AM The Purple Helmets have been engaged to appear at the unveiling of a fat barrister's new chin in Heage on Sunday afternoon. Our management company does not permit two appearances on the same day. October's outrage will make up for it. Perhaps it was August's display that brought out the Ms Penelope Rutledge in the licensee. Specky, the Cara performance and heckling workshop is on Friday night at the Moulders Arms. Hope to see you there. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:39 AM Oh, does that mean you not coming sunday at all then, David? Let me down twice in a week? What in heaven's name is the world coming to? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:47 AM After the barrister's Chin - opening ceremony in Heage, I will be there, Peter - with a haunted look in my good eye and a firework or two strapped to me smoke - blackened privates. Don't worry - it will be one of my normal sessions, with you co-hosting, just like any other gathering of normal, balanced musical types. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:53 AM Look forward to your company David. And we will chat on Friday, mate. Working on getting Mr Watson out for a swift half as well. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:59 AM Splendid. I trust that he recovered from his encounter with jOhn on Friday? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,ossonflags Date: 03 Sep 02 - 11:27 AM Here is my opinion for what it is worth.I will take the chance on being called a bit of a fence sitter. Are we going to be dictated to by a boozers labourer when she might be taking the high road in a couple of weeks? Having a bad day my arse!!!!!! I have seen those objectionable notices about setting man traps and advocating flogging and transportation for the little mites who dare sashay into the hallowed darts boutique. The track record for managers (and that is all they are)is not good, we have seen several changes in the last four years. This self apointed folk music police person should be apraised of a few facts about our beloved sessions. The session in Nellies has been running for four years now.In that time countless thousands of pounds have been put across the bar for the benefit of Samual Smiths shareholders by people like myself and all you lot. For whant of a better word (god I hate the term folkie)the peformers and afficianados of the folk music tradition are not usually noted for there unruly behavior, indeed in the four years I have co hosted this gig with the deanmeister (thats your bonfire urinated on oakley) I have not seen one bit of trouble, not even dummy spitting out peter!! Any children that have turned up have been well behaved and in a lot of cases have contributed to the sessions, most of all they have been in the collective care of all the peopple at the session, not just there parents, were do you see that in the so called children friendly pubs were in a lot of cases children are allowed to run riot? In the words of the great Robert Tressle " A place that is not fit for women and children does not deserve to exist" That certainly is not the case in Nellies. All the people who turn up to do a bit are all vollunteers and are not under any contract to appear. We do it because we love and enjoy doing it,and for the most part so do all the regulars. It would be nice if the odd pint was slipped across, but to me that is not important, what is would be nice, not to say polite even, is that we get a little apreciation,a simple "thank you" would be enough,as they staggered to the safe under the weight of the till containing all our collective monies. It would be a thousand pities if all that had been built up over the last years were to be destroyed by one short sited, vindictive, beige person. The Nellies pub is a great tradition with great links with the Folk Music tradition, let us keep that in mind. However,it will no harm to mention to the said boozers labourer that, as people have stated there are more pubs in the area, the one at the other end of Beverley Westwood springs to mind,I only know it as the Drum and Monkey it used to have a folk freindly landlord .I dont know if that still is the case. I am only sorry I wont be able to attend this weeks session, the manager of Punch the Horse has got other plans for me,will watch this space with bated breath for any feedback. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 11:50 AM Ossonflags. You have moved me. Thank you. Points have been taken, noted, and filed. Nellies will continue. And I will find a discreet and tactful way to remind the lady concerned that we are not unpaid skivvies to be bollocked for not turning up on the correct day. I also intend to rectify the children situation. Cos I still think that stinks. The debate has been settled, I think. And we will miss you on Sunday, Michael. Am I correct in saying that this is the first session in four years that you have missed? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 03 Sep 02 - 12:02 PM Incidentally, I have just been to Foresters for a pint, Mick. They apparently do not have posters relating to next thursday's soiree. Please speak Mrs ossonflags to rectify situation? Watch out for "Punch The Horse at Foresters Arms" dudes. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,ossonflags Date: 03 Sep 02 - 12:33 PM ny assistance you may require, especiially over the children issue, you have of course my unquestioning support. I,like you,and any right minded person thinks it stinks. Will get mrs. Ossonflags on the Foresters issue post hast. Have sume bear for me on Sunday. You are nearly right.I believe i have missed one other session in four years because of that little devil Dennis playing me up. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: ossonflags Date: 03 Sep 02 - 03:00 PM deanmeister,as i am away can you sort out the foresters post? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 04 Sep 02 - 04:28 AM How do you mean, sort out the Foresters post??? I have no posters...! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Ossonflags Date: 04 Sep 02 - 09:13 AM Erm,sorry for not making it clear,I meant post a thread to the Mudcat site.Mrs Ossonflags has sorted out the publicity this very morning. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 04 Sep 02 - 11:46 AM Will do, Michael. And tell Mary that Sun/Rose and Crown is ok. Just this once, mind..... |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 05 Sep 02 - 05:01 AM Refresh. Just in case anyone forgets.... |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: brid widder Date: 05 Sep 02 - 02:28 PM I'll be there Pete... I could even try to find a few kids to bring... just to annoy herladyship!! I think it would be a real shame to lose the connection with such a place but I agree with Mick that there are other places that would make us welcome.... the PVFF proved that. I cannot recall a single occasion when the fact that kids are included has caused a problem and some of them are definite regulars and as such deserve our loyalty... I would say if they go we go!! Nellies has a brilliant atmosphere... but so does anywhere in the right company!
|
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 05 Sep 02 - 07:01 PM I havn't got any kids but I believe they should be alowed in and if not we should move the session. There will still be a strong folk music connection with Nellies as the folk club runs there on monday nights and I think there is also an Irish session there on tuesday nights |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 06 Sep 02 - 05:17 AM Thanks for your support, people. It is always appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Caz Date: 07 Sep 02 - 04:57 PM DeanMister, I'm glad you posted this because I turned up last week for the session and not a soul was in sight. At first I thought I'd got the time wrong so I walked around Beverley for a bit then went back and still no one was there. So I thought, perhaps they break for the summer? Anyway it's a good job half the women in our village think you're sexy or I wouldn't forgive you! See you at the session, it's been ages and I'm looking forward to it! Carole |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 07 Sep 02 - 05:04 PM Hey what time is kick off |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 08 Sep 02 - 05:37 AM It's today ....but Deanie bouy you havn't answered my question, so I'll presume a 2.00 kick off. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Kipling Date: 08 Sep 02 - 06:10 AM Hello all, It's Chris here- the one who said goodbye to work in Hanoi, Vietnam for a year. In my one year living in Beverley (studying at Bishop Burton College) I was a regular at the Folk Club and tried to be a regular at the Sunday sessions. I thoroughly enjoyed my year in Beverley- I'm bloody jealous to hear you lot talking about it actually. Speaking as someone from a new town where you'd struggle to find one decent pub to hold a session of any kind, I would be very sorry to see this session move from Nellies- but at the end of the day- if peoples enjoyment is being spoilt in some way, well... Sing some songs for me- missing you all a hell of a lot Chris |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Bassic Date: 08 Sep 02 - 09:48 AM Ah Chris! Is it you? The singer of Shanty type songs? If it is then it explains why I havn`t seen you around! Bass player who sits in front of the Piano at Nellies here. Have missed your singing the last few times, always enjoyed it when you sang, hows Hanoi? Are we likely to see you back in E.Yorks again in the future? Am I correct in thinking you also came to a session at The Hase in Hessle or was it somewhere else? Anyway, good luck in foreign parts! Hope to see and hear you somewhere in the future! Gordon |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 08 Sep 02 - 01:17 PM Strange session - However, I am glad to say that there was lots and lots of quality arythmical hupping going on well done!! Question - Oakley I was that smell coming from you? you know the terrible one on the A164 which Nikki let into the car as she Hupped at you when we drove past!
Keep off the onions I say!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Oaklet Date: 08 Sep 02 - 11:21 PM Hi Chris, I thought that I hadn't seen you for ages. Is you posting to the far east for long? Punch the Horse has a gig at Hornsea coming up; perhaps we can meet up and have sume bear9. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Kipling Date: 09 Sep 02 - 01:59 AM Hi, Bassie- yes tis' me- the singer of shanty type songs. I wanted to make it to the session at Hessle. Never quite got chance. I will be in Hanoi, Vietnam for 1 year- i've been here for about three weeks- i've got to do another year at old Bishop Burton College from Sept 2003. I'm looking forward to it- although the presence of Folk in Beverley does fuel my enthusiasm- just a little bit. Punch the Horse- well Hornsea could be tricky- I'll see if I can't get you a booking in Hanoi. Traditional Vietnamese wedding- well it would make a change from the bloody Karaoke- very popular over here. Oh, while your'e singing one for me- have a pint as well because the beer over here is pretty rough. They do a draught beer called 'Beer Hoi'- well i'll say no more. Well apart from the poor beer and lack of Folk I am actually having a good time- Vietnamese culture etc. Keep writing Chris |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Oaklet Date: 09 Sep 02 - 02:54 AM "Beer Hoi9!" will now become the arhymthic hupping cry, ejaculated to punctuate tunes at the most inapropriate moments. Smallpliers please take note. Thanks for the encouragement on the A164, I noticed a terrible smell of onions all afternoon, I think it is your terrible diet and nothing to do with me at all. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 09 Sep 02 - 08:01 AM Hey Chris! Nice to hear from you, mate. You missed a bizarre session yesterday. I nearly had to murder a female violinist who did her utmost to fuck up the entire afternoon. If she does it again, I am prepared with a gun and a pair of wire cutters. If u want to keep in touch on hear, regular threads are posted usually under the Title of Punch the Horse. Hope things are well. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 09 Sep 02 - 08:31 AM DIET....................... Not in my vocabulary man besides Nikki said it was you - somthing to do with bear and getting a fright on the A164 Bear Hoi!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 09 Sep 02 - 10:53 AM DeanMeister, I urge Oakley standards of tolerance here. I think she may have been Ms Penelope Rutledge and I have been nurturing a desire to spend the rest of my days with her, shoulder to shoulder; shoplifting, drinking super-strength lager and giggling hysterically whilst breaking wind in gun shops. Enjoyed the session until bear9 number 4, then was content to watch the whole thing find its own dynamic, or rather Penelope's, during bears9 5, 6 and 7. I managed to discuss my flea infestation with Dodgy-bird. Smallpliers is a danger to cyclists on the 164. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 09 Sep 02 - 11:05 AM Nonononononononononono Cyclists are a danger to smallpiper on the A164 - Nikki is even worse she wanted to lean out of the car and steal your fiddle or at least get hold of it then have me accelerate up to 120 miles per hour so that you would get a good take off at the top of Skidby hill! On the up side you'd have crossed the Humber without reference to the bridge! As for Penny............ Dang they were big and loud, independant and not always in tune or the right key! You know to what I reffer Oakers! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 09 Sep 02 - 11:21 AM Given my current interest in dirigibles, there was more than a passing resemblance to a dead heat in a Zeppelin race. Once more, I am in love again. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 09 Sep 02 - 11:39 AM Ah my bouy your powers of observation are slightly lacking the one on the left clearly won by 2 or 3mm's. Being in love once more is good but how do you inform the poor Penny? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: The DeanMeister Date: 09 Sep 02 - 12:09 PM Sadly the tweed skirt and cardigan appeared to be missing, David. But perhaps eternal happiness has finally arrived for you. And Smallpliers, I was sure it was the one on the right that won. Perhaps I was getting mirror image due to being sat opposite, as opposed to beside Ms Routledge. Or was it the bear9 number six that coloured my judgement on the issue???? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 09 Sep 02 - 02:32 PM 'twas the bear9 my friend remember she was fiddling in my ear at one point! |

Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 10 Sep 02 - 08:51 AM or at the Marlborough Club Hull on 20th or Durty Nellie's Hull on 28th etc etc etc Shamless self promotion Deanie bouy! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 10 Sep 02 - 09:47 AM DeanMeister, this forum is not just an opportunity to publicise your musical exploits. It is a place to discuss wider items of musical interest with a community of those with a genuine interest in folk and blues music. When Cara plays at the Half Moon in Elloughton, East Yorkshire on the 4th October at 9.00, or even at Cherry Burton Village Hall on th 11th October at 8.30, I am sure it will be done without even mentioning the fact on this forum. Desist at once. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Willa Date: 10 Sep 02 - 02:53 PM I'm glad you did mensh it, Oakley - hope to get to Ellughton. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Oaklet Date: 10 Sep 02 - 07:33 PM It will be great to see you Willa (and your hordes) at the Half Moon, Elloughton, East Yorkshire, UK, Earth. That Dean has a cheek, promoting stuff on here. If this was him, he'd probably bang on about his CD. The fact that Cara will refuse to publicise the fact that the album "Asleep Behind the Settee" - a collection of original and traditional, spirited, contemplative tunes and songs of over an hour in length - is available for only £12 at the gig or £13 by request to david.oakley7@btopenworld.com, is an indication of how important Cara feels about keeping this site free from shameless self-promotion.
|
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 10 Sep 02 - 07:41 PM I'm so gald you are not promoting the new range of Bear9 mats that you have had made recently and I will of course (not) be requesting two copies and most certainly not at the exorberant price of £13 my good man I'll give you £20 for the matching pair! shamless self promotion will get youse nowear! your as ever Smalllepper |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 11 Sep 02 - 04:30 AM Done, smalllepper. You may be interested to read one person'd reaction to "Asleep Behind the Settee". I can't claim that this is typical, but what does "Can we have another CD on please?" tell you about the quality of the album that you have secured at a discount. The reviewer was Skipjack's youngest. What perception from one so young. |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 11 Sep 02 - 04:34 AM But had you played her Mnm's latest what would her reaction have been? Anyway I'm not purchasing CDs but rather Bear9 mats. Also sleeping behind the sofa is a very uncomfortable thing to do and not recommended for those who own dogs! |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Skipjack K8 Date: 11 Sep 02 - 06:42 AM These hour long songs sound jolly Keeblesque, Oakers. I fear that your principled stand on shameless plugging might create the impression amongst the record-buying public that 'A slurp behind the sooty' is worse than it actually is. Geronimo
|
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: smallpiper Date: 11 Sep 02 - 10:49 AM But who knows as not many have heard the finished article (yet) and it may indeed be as good as we expect (?????) tonight at Goxhill bouys? |
Subject: RE: Nellies Session this Sunday From: Oaklet Date: 11 Sep 02 - 12:23 PM Of course not all the spirited and contemplative tunes are an hour long, Slipback. That would be silly and would short-change our devoted following. Four of the more contemplative tracks are 1 hour 20mins apiece. The most frivoulous of the spirited pieces is briefly half an hour long. |
