My mum used to sing "Marguerita" to me when we lived in England many years ago. There were two other songs she used to sing; one was "Dashing away with the smoothing Iron" and the other had the line "Horsey keep your tail up" at the end. She used to sing the latter while dancing around and holding her dress up at the back. Does anyone have any idea of the rest of it. My Mum died when I was eleven so memories of her are so treasured and they often seem to revolve around music.Thanks, this is a great site. P |

Songs in that mode flooded the airwaves when I was a kid. At the time I detested their tweeness and complacency, and was delighted when skiffle and rock blew them away. Now, over half a century later, they bring back fragrant memories of an age of innocence. Or was it really so innocent? Probably not - the press was more discrete then about the private lives of entertainers, but we know now that most of them were at it like rabbits backstage. Meanwhile, in the playground, those supposedly vulnerable schoolkids the BBC was trying to protect from the evils of rock and roll were singing dirty parodies of the apparently harmless pop songs they were allowed to hear on the radio... Times change, musical styles change, official rhetoric changes - but human nature doesn't seem to change all that much. Wassail! |

I regret the passing of an age of innocence. Almost anything can be banned if we search for darkness in its roots. Should we ban American Gospel Music because it had its beginning in enslavement, or our National Anthem because of the historical repression of the Highlanders? We should be allowed a little more freedom from political correctness. Would there have been men on the moon if the Nazis had not developed the V2? My great objection is the stealing of my mother tongue. I long for the days when I could use the word gay in its true context, and I remember when the N word was simply the Latin for black, and could be used to describe anything of that colour. |

As a food and wine writer (day job) I might make the following observation."Purple grapes", "golden glasses (presumably it's the wine that was golden, not the glass)" - whatever wine they were making it wasn't fremented on the skins! |
