Well, this isn't the one you're after (which will probably be along in a moment, if I know the Mudcat - but here's another Margarita song, by mudcatter Harvey Andrews - and anyone called Margarita deserves to know it, even if it brings her to tears, which it probably will if she ever hears it sung..

The chorus is
La Bella Margarita
So beautiful to see
La Bella Margarita,
Margarita drinking wine with me.

Verse:
In September when the wine is growing
Margarita...
..
Margarita drinking wine with me
I'm sorry about the missing two lines, they just won't come. Maybe someone else can fill them in. Jim McLean

From memory, the 'Chorus' changes in line with the words of the verse, The first verse (I think) starts
"In September when the leaves are purple",
And the song charts the course of the love affair by the seasons of the vintner's year

The last line of the chorus progresses through
Margarita picking grapes with me
Margarita treading grapes with me
Margarita drinking wine with me

MA BELLE MARGUERITE
lyrics by AP Herbert, Music by Vivian Ellis

In September when the grapes are purple
Marguerite pick the grapes with me
There are silver bells upon her fingers
All the little boys come out to see

Ma belle Marguerite
So beautiful to see
Les mains de ma petite
Marguerite pick the grapes with me.
Ting -a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling-a-ling-ay,
Ting -a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling-a-ling-ay.
Ting -a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling-a-ling-ay,
Ting -a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling- a-ling-a-ling-ay.

In October when they fill the wine press
Marguerite tread the grapes with me
Marguerite has the feet of angels
All the little birds come out to see

Ma belle Marguerite
So beautiful to see
Les pieds de ma petite
Marguerite tread the grapes with me.
Ting -a-ling- (etc..)

In December when the wind is blowing
And the snow is on the Bois d'Issy (?)
Sunshine still is in the golden glasses
Marguerite drink the sun with me

Ma belle Marguerite
So beautiful to see
La bouche de ma petite
Marguerite drinking avec moi,
Marguerite drinking avec moi!

Note, this is from memory, and the little boys/little birds might be transposed!

From the musical Bless the Bride, Book and lyrics by AP Herbert, Music by Vivian Ellis, opened in London in 1947 starring Georges Guetary and Lizbeth Webb.

Thanks, Noreen!

That song always makes me think of the old BBC radio programme "Down your way" for some reason. I could remember bits of it but not enough to be useful, but now I have it all!

A song I heard on my Granny's knee!

All down to correct spelling! "Margarita" and "Marguerita" didn't come up with the goods - "Margeurite" does first time.

Thanx to everyone for your contributions.

My colleague at work is delighted to have the words, she is really looking forward to singing the song to her own "Bella Margarita"! I knew Mudcatters would come up trumps, but even I have been amazed by the speed and detail of your responses.

Thanks again,

I was so pleased to find these lyrics. My mum used to sing "Marguerita" to me when we lived in England many years ago.
There were two other songs she used to sing; one was "Dashing away with the smoothing Iron" and the other had the line "Horsey keep your tail up" at the end. She used to sing the latter while dancing around and holding her dress up at the back. Does anyone have any idea of the rest of it.
My Mum died when I was eleven so memories of her are so treasured and they often seem to revolve around music. Thanks, this is a great site. P

"Strange how potent cheap music is." (N Coward)

Anyone remember "Pedro the fisherman was always whistling" - "Old Father Thames keeps rolling along" - or "We'll gather lilacs in the spring again"? Songs in that mode flooded the airwaves when I was a kid. At the time I detested their tweeness and complacency, and was delighted when skiffle and rock blew them away.

Now, over half a century later, they bring back fragrant memories of an age of innocence. Or was it really so innocent? Probably not - the press was more discrete then about the private lives of entertainers, but we know now that most of them were at it like rabbits backstage. Meanwhile, in the playground, those supposedly vulnerable schoolkids the BBC was trying to protect from the evils of rock and roll were singing dirty parodies of the apparently harmless pop songs they were allowed to hear on the radio...

Times change, musical styles change, official rhetoric changes - but human nature doesn't seem to change all that much.

Wassail!

This song is a favorite among many of mine from the Black and White Minstrel Show - sung by John Boulter and the George Mitchel Singers. What a disgrace that such wonderful and wholesome entertainment was struck down by the dead hand of socialist political correctness.

I see nothing objectionable about this song.

What was objectionable about "The Black and White Minstrel Show" was that people dressed up in blackface!

They could have quit wearing blackface and continued to perform songs like this one. Why didn't they?

Whatever the reason, it has nothing to do with "political correctness."

08 Jun 09 - 05:54 AM (#2651152)
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ah Bella Margarita / Ma Belle Marguerite

Why didn't they? Because their sole raison d'etre was the continuation of that particular old trasition of entertainment. After all, they were called the Black and White Minstrels.

I regret the passing of an age of innocence. Almost anything can be banned if we search for darkness in its roots. Should we ban American Gospel Music because it had its beginning in enslavement, or our National Anthem because of the historical repression of the Highlanders? We should be allowed a little more freedom from political correctness. Would there have been men on the moon if the Nazis had not developed the V2?

My great objection is the stealing of my mother tongue. I long for the days when I could use the word gay in its true context, and I remember when the N word was simply the Latin for black, and could be used to describe anything of that colour.

Have been searching for these lyrics to sing to my mum. She is in a nursing home with dementia and I saw a programme about how songs can still be remembered by people with dementia so I am collecting all the songs that I heard from my parents 78s as a child including this one. My middle name is also Marguerita. (not many people know how to spell it as I find when I tell people my name!)
Thanks for the lyrics. I am very appreciative!I can sing this to mum on mynext visit together with The Gypsy Rover!!

Thanks for that, guys.

I've been interested in this song for years but could never find a full set of lyrics. My Auntie Ethel used to sing it when I was working in her hotel kitchen as a youthful chef de commis. Though her French was by no means perfect - her favourite wine was 'New-its' (Nuits Saint Georges).

As a food and wine writer (day job) I might make the following observation."Purple grapes", "golden glasses (presumably it's the wine that was golden, not the glass)" - whatever wine they were making it wasn't fremented on the skins!

I have a notion that we had a Bing Crosby 78 of this -- can anyone else confirm if he sang this? (Although the Georges Guetary version sounds very familiar, probably from Family Favourites programme on the BBC -- he had a lovely lyrical lightness on the 'Aaah!' at the start of the chorus.)

Here are the French lyrics; they can be found at several web sites:

MA BELLE MARGUERITE
As sung by Georges Guétary

Les raisins du beau mois de septembre
Marguerite les cueille avec moi,
à ses doigts elle a des gouttes d'encre
L'oiseau chante dès qu'il l'aperçoit,
Ah ! belle Marguerite
Ah, qu'ils sont merveilleux,
Les doigts de ma petite
Egrenant les grappes du bon Dieu.

[Refrain, x2]

Ah ! belle Marguerite
Ah, que c'est merveilleux,
Des lèvres si petites
Dégustant les grâces du bon Dieu.

[au Refrain]

Ah, ah
Et chacun regarde avec émoi
Ah, ah
Belle Marguerite
Ah, que c'est merveilleux,
D]es lèvres si petites
Dégustant les grâces du bon Dieu
Dégustant les grâces du bon Dieu.

Lovely French words! Fyi for nonFrancophones, "grappe" is bunch of grapes, "raisin" is grape. And though not in the song, raisin would be "raisin sec" (aren't languages fun).
