Subject: RE: ADD: Won't You Come Over to My House From: GUEST,Glenda Hutchens Gammel Date: 15 Dec 18 - 03:30 PM Here's how my Dad sang it to me:
The time was in June, and the bees hummed a tune, while the perfume of rose filled the air, And just crossed the way sat a baby one day, All alone, and no one seemed to care. As one passed her by, she looked with a sigh at the tears in her eyes swollen red, and thought of her own young darling alone, and softly to her then she said, Won't you come over to my house? Won't you come over and play? I've lots of playthings: a dolly or two, and I live in the house 'cross the way. I'll feed you on candy and sweet things. I'll put your hair in a curl, of you will come over to my house and play that you're my little girl. You may not know, but not long ago, these playthings I'm giving to you were my little girl's, yes, my own little pearl's, And her eyes were like yours, large and blue. But one day I found that an angel came down and took her far up to the sky. So, don't go away, please come every day, Or you'll make your new mommy cry.... Won't you come over to my house, etc. |

Subject: Lyr Add: WON'T YOU COME OVER TO MY HOUSE? From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Sep 02 - 02:39 PM Found at the Levy Sheet Music collection, and transcribed by me: WON'T YOU COME OVER TO MY HOUSE? (Words, Egbert Van Alstyne. Music, Harry Williams. 1906) [They also wrote "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree" and many other songs.] The time was in June. The bees hummed a tune. The perfume of rose filled the air, When just over the way sat a baby one day, All alone and no one seemed to care. But one passerby turned and looked with a sigh At the tears and the eyes swollen red, Then close to her breast, the young darling she pressed, And tenderly to her she said: CHORUS: Won't you come over to my house? Won't you come over and play? I've lots of playthings: a dolly or two. We live in the house 'cross the way. I'll give you candy and sweet things. I'll put your hair in a curl. Won't you come over to my house and play that you're my little girl? Perhaps you don't know that not long ago, These toys I am giving to you Were my little girl's, yes, my own little pearl's, And her eyes were like yours, large and blue. But one night I found that the angels came 'round, And they took her way up to the sky. So, don't stay away, but come over each day, Or you'll make your new mama cry. CHORUS. [The only recording I have found of this is by NRBQ on "Diggin' Uncle Q". (Not to be confused with an unrelated blues song that is also titled "Won't You Come Over to My House?".)] |
