After reading This Thread I was inspired to write a train song, 'Ride The Rails' and when I went back to check the thread I found a post from Katlaughing which immediately inspired another train song, 'One Last Run'! I was particularly pleased about the second one as I'd wanted to write a song about my Dad for some time, but couldn't find the way into it. Thanks to Kat's post I found the angle I wanted. Anyway, I've uploaded rough demos of the songs, and if you'd like to check them out Click here
This is more HTML than I've ever attempted before -- I hope it all works!

I especially love "put my ashes in the firebox".....I can see my grandfather asking for that.

I recently played as part of an Elvis tribute band.Played Mystery Train. Was never a big Elvis fan but this song played well.Actually it was a brilliant night come to think of it.We were all into it,and so was the audience. The other train song is Man of constant sorrow.Bowled over by the film.

O.K. -- Lyrics as requested:

ONE LAST RUN

SOME OLD RAILWAYMEN WERE REMINISCING 'BOUT THE DAYS
WHEN THEM BIG OLD STEAM TRAINS RULED THE LAND
BUT NOW THAT GOLDEN AGE HAD SADLY PASSED AWAY
AND LEFT THE DIESEL ENGINES IN COMMAND
THEY SPOKE OF LOCOMOTIVES THEY'D KNOWN AND LOVED SO WELL
AND FIREMEN LONG SINCE DEAD WHO'D MADE THEM RUN
STOKING UP THE FIREBOX BLAZING HOT AS HELL
MAKING SMOKE SO THICK IT BLOCKED THE SUN

ONE OLD RAILWAYMAN, HE KNEW HIS TIME WAS NEAR
THE JOURNEY OF HIS LIFE WAS ALMOST DONE
HE SAID NOW WHEN I'M DEAD BOYS, ALL YOU FELLERS HERE
TAKE MY ASHES OUT FOR ONE LAST RUN HOLD MY WAKE ON THE FOOTPLATE OF A BIG OLD CASTLE CLASS TAKE HER DOWN THE COAST ROAD TO THE SEA
AND WHEN YOU'VE GOT HER UP TO SPEED JUST RAISE A PARTING GLASS
AND WISH ME LUCK WHEREVER I MAY BE

PUT MY ASHES IN THE FIREBOX WHEN THE COALS ARE GLOWING RED
LET THE WHISTLE BLOW ITS MOURNFUL TONE
I'LL BE SAILING THROUGH THE SMOKESTACK AND FLYING OVERHEAD
AND SOMEWHERE IN THE SLIPSTREAM I'LL BE GONE.

RIDE THE RAILS

WELL I'M WAITIN' BY THE RAILROAD
AS THE TRAIN COMES ROUND THE CURVE
SHE'S SLOWIN' DOWN AT THE EDGE OF TOWN
I'M GETTING' UP MY NERVE

TO JUMP THAT TRAIN AND RIDE AWAY
TO A LAND THAT'S GREEN AND FREE
FAR AWAY FROM THE SHACKS BY THE RAILROAD TRACKS
THERE'S A BETTER PLACE FOR ME

I'M GONNA RIDE, RIDE THE RAILS INTO THE GOLDEN WEST
AND WHEN I FIND THAT HAPPY TRAIL MY SPIRIT WILL BE BLESSED
I'M GONNA LEAVE, LEAVE BEHIND MY TROUBLES ON THE RIVER SHORE
AND WHEN I CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE I WON'T BE BACK NO MORE

WELL I KISSED MY MAMA ON THE CHEEK

AND I SHOOK MY DADDY'S HAND

HE SAID DON'T CRY, 'COS BYE AND BYE

WE'LL MEET IN THE PROMISED LAND

WHERE A MAN MIGHT LIVE IN DIGNITY AND CAST HIS CARES AWAY

UPON THAT HAPPY DAY

I'M GONNA RIDE, RIDE THE RAILS INTO THE GOLDEN WEST
AND WHEN I FIND THAT HAPPY TRAIL MY SPIRIT WILL BE BLESSED
I'M GONNA LEAVE, LEAVE BEHIND MY TROUBLES ON THE RIVER SHORE
AND WHEN I CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE I WON'T BE BACK NO MORE
