Here's a link to a newly-launched site which is well worth a visit.

www.tradmusic.com

Many thanks derrymacash for drawing attention to this...

Looks interesting on a quick perusal and I have bookmarked it for further study!

Interesting site -- but how come I can't exit it by using the Back button?

Can't exit the site either. There are several like this. I have to close out and then re-open.

You can't use the back button because it redirects you. If you go back, you just get redirected again. If you want to go back on one of these sites, click the little downward facing arrow by the back button, and it'll show you a list of the last 10 pages or so -- pick any one.

Nicole, it just showed me some dotted bars. Played with them and finally ended up with another page which was dead, so I re-started. I still had to play with the dotted bars on my cable provider page and luckily got my format back. Just a Luddite.
The little dotted bars are still there (may have been there before, never noticed). Are they dangerous?

Just hit back twice quickly and it should get you out.

I don't know why they have to have the flash bit on the first page and the redirect thing, sort of spoils a good site to me.

I've been watching this site for over a week now and I think it has possibilities of being good. There was another one here mentioned on the newsgroups after the one Derrymcash has just mentioned but I'm not sure I like it.

That makes 3 new ones including my own in the space of a couple of months...

Interesting...

Jon

Dotted bars? I can't picture what you're describing. Are you using a special browser your ISP provides? They may have customized the appearance.

When I created my own site, I had simplicity in mind and I agree that on the whole - as with most things in life - I find simplicity to be infinitely preferable to sophistication.

But when I compare the layout and feel of my site, Pay The Reckoning to site like tradmusic.com, which are using leading-edge design tools, mine begins to look a bit clunky.

What does anyone else think?

Maybe there's no easy answer to this perennial question and we just have to accept that all websites will have limitations?

It's a pity if a site with good intentions and the potential to serve as a resource for the folk and trad community founders on the basis that the technology driving it gets in the way.

Derry:

Your site presents the info in an accessible way. What more is needed? (However, the Tradmusic.com one's a bit sexier. At least they both load quickly. What brasss me off is the "sexy" sites which takes ages to load. Or don;t load at all because I've not got the correct plug-in)

But tradmusic.com doesn't have a picture of a glum-looking Tomás Ó Críomtháin as its mascot!

Cheers ... Aidan

Well, I've now had a chance to give both sites a serious surfing over. And here're my votes:

look & feel: tradmusic - 9/10 Pay the Reckoning - 4/10

content: tradmusic - 3/10 Pay the Reckoning - 8/10

accessibility: tradmusic - 6/10 (nice but the gig guide's horrible!) Pay the Reckoning - 7/10 (pages are a little bit too long)

relevance: tradmusic - 2/10 (who needs another general notice board?) Pay the Reckoning - 11/10

totals: tradmusic - 20/40 = 50% Pay the Reckoning - 30/40 = 75% and the clear winner!

Nice one, Aidan

Keep it clunky, derry. Your site is legible, and easy to navigate. And it's got good content.

I hate sites that have white letters on black backgrounds. It just makes it harder to read, and no advantage whatsoever. I'll probably go back and have anther look at this one to be sure, but my first reaction was unfavourable.

Hamish ...

I'm blown away!

I'll keep on at it, then!
