Subject: New session in Manchester UK
From: Pied Piper
Date: 26 Sep 02 - 07:25 AM

Pied Piper Enterprises (purveyors of music to the poor and unknown) is pleased to announce the commencement of a traditional music extravaganza every Monday night at the Bull's Head Public House central Manchester. This excellent hostelry (supplying a selection of well kept REEL ALES) is located at the junction of Fairfield St and London road, immediately across the road from the new low-level entry to Piccadilly train station and Metro tram stop. Traditional instrumentalists of all varieties are cordially invited to attend this feast of furious fun and celebrate their digital facility in rendering the dance music and airs of Europe and beyond. Proceedings commence at 8:30pm.
No miserable Gits please.

Yours Pied Piper

You said "no miserable gits" you have just alienated the vast majority of folk music players!

Is this the tavern whence I saw you last, the one with the traditional dog turds on the carpet, the ascetically pleasing cracked ceramics in the toilets, wallpaper delicately cascading away from the prettily peeling plaster. The one where the Alsatians approached in two's and the boys in blue didn't?

Not a million miles away from the White Lion at Swinton - also every Monday night.

No Raggytash. This a far more salubrious alcoholic beverage consumption centre, where a sophisticated and cosmopolitan clientele participate in witty conversation and much ribald laughter, whilst enjoying the latest facilities in human waste disposal technology. All the best PP

My dear Watson, just to make things clear. Monday night at the White Lion is a folk club not a session. All the best PP.

Absolutely PP, and it's good to have the choice, but if there is more than one event in the same area on the same night, whether session, singaround, folk club or concert, surely you present your potential attendees with a dilemma, and possibly reduce the number of people at any one of the venues.

Elementary my dear Watson. The population of greater Manchester number 2,577,000 souls. I think there are enough people to go around. It's a daft idea to limit the number of traditional events. The more the things happen the more people will bump into folk stuff and if they like it they will come again. Your argument would lead to a downward spiral in the number of trad events and people attending them. PP.

You need many venues doing (folk/contemporary) that don't use the "f" word. the word "folk" puts so many people off especially younger musicians who hopefully will carry on a musical tradition more venues please!

Mr Happy, the Jolly Angler Mondays are essentially singers sessions, whereas, if I understand correctly, Pied Piper's session is instrumental - so, no, not a replacement, but additional.

Mr H, Monday at the Jolly Angler was never a session as this one seems likely to be, more a mixed singaround with all taking a turn to do their piece, singing or playing. I went recently after a long break and some of the old regulars were still there, including the widely-remembered Paul Connor, so we had a bit of a sing and a play. I think that was a bit unusual though.

The Jolly still hosts splendid Irish sessions on Thursday and Saturday nights, with the likes of Michael McGoldrick and Desi Donnelly in attendance.

Good luck with the new session, PP, may meet you there one week.

...but if there is more than one event in the same area on the same night... Mr Watson, there are more than two clubs on in the Manchester area every night of the week, catering for all different tastes; the motorway network makes it possible to travel far and wide, as I do regularly. It's great to have such a choice!

Hi Joan! I should have mentioned, that Joan's Folkal Point is the ultimate reference source to find where to go, in the Manchester area and the rest of the North West (PM her to get put on the mailing list). You are appreciated, Joan!

Just an additional BIG THANK YOU to Joan. I am trying to get to most of the sing-arounds at Wigan Folk Club, and find the information in Folkal Point invaluable.

I have tried to put a link in the sentence (a new thing for me). Hope it works.

Thanks again Joan.

Thanks, Noreen and Leighton. I would point out, though, that 'Folkal Point' is only as good as the information I am given or can dig out. I have added the Bulls Head session to the database - it will appear from next week's issue. I do check Mudcat regularly, so anything of interest in the area I cover (quite a big chunk of NW England) will be added to FP. Check out Leighton's link above (thanks, Leighton!) for the diary section, which Graham Dixon very kindly puts up on his "Trouble At' Mill" website. The complete Folkal Point (including selected advance diary dates, Song of the Week, folk ads, plus loads of links to festivals, artistes and other folkie things) is available as two attachments on free weekly subscription - email me by clicking here.

Sorry about the thread drift, PP, hope to catch you at a session soon.

Joan

Thanks for your contributions people. I don't mind about the thread drift, keeps the session information near the top of the list.
Hi Mr Happy. Sort of.It wasn't my intention to highjack the sing around. I organized a session on a Monday night at the Angler because no singing had gone on for some time, and guess what, the word got around, and the regulars started attending again;C'est la vie.
Hi guest a player. I'm inclined to agree with you. Some of my freinds who used to attend "Folk Clubs" regularly stopped going in the late 80's due to bad experiences at certain venues that shall remain nameless. I think some people that got involved in folk music at that time thought it was their "precious things" and only intended for "Locals". I think things are a lot better now, but we have to keep are guard up against being ghettoised. All the best PP.

And as co-organiser of Swinton Folk Club I can confirrm that I don't mind PP's session at all. Get rid of all the bloody Banjo's, Bagpipes and Bodhrans from our nice peaceful club;-)

Now if we could only stop them bloody awful finger in the ear folk singers as well...

Just a reminder as well folks. Swinton Folk Festival, October 25/25/27. Tickets for the Roy Bailey concert now sold out but come and see the amazing PP with his new band, Boneshaker, at the Ceilidh on the 25th (No prizes for guessing which one he is!) Still plenty of other stuff going on as well.

Cheers

OK to reply to myself (no change there then).

Thursday 17 at 9 seems likely and to be run by a man called Jozeph (yes I believe with a z, who is inviting musicians and friends.

Any body add to this?

John J, it's Joe Kerrins who runs the Singers Nights at the Jolly Angler, and from what PP said further up the thread, it's been revived recently after he (PP) ran a session there. I think it's been mentioned on another thread (the one about the Song Carriers' Club?) that the Jolly Angler nights have picked up again after a time in the doldrums. I hope to get down there soon to check it out...

Hmmm, what I get if I do that, Mr Happy, is http://www.verseandworse.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Joan.htm, an old Verse and Worse page, with July /August's Folkal Point... not a lot of use. (I've e-mailed them to remind them to update).

Ali (and anyone else) if you PM Joan (click PM next to her name, see her post above) above with your e-mail address, she'll add you to the list who get it sent regularly by e-mail.

That ok, Joan? :0)

Mr Happy, only part of Folkal Point is on the web. The full edition is available on paper at Wigan Folk Club and anywhere else I happen to be; but mainly via free email subscription - it's sent out as two email attachments (soon to increase to three) each Sunday, or earlier if I'm away for the weekend. A number of folk club organisers who are on my subscription list do take the trouble to print out some copies for their members who aren't on the internet.

Graham Dixon very kindly puts the first attachment, the Diary bit, up on his Trouble at' Mill website. The rest of the edition contains further diary dates, Song of the Week, folk ads, and the occasional article. The covering email contains loads of links to folk clubs, festivals, artistes, and other things which may be of interest.

Ali, hope you had a good time in Ibiza, and if you or anyone else want to subscribe, send me an email and I'll add you to the mailing list.

Joan

Noreen, our posts crossed in cyberspace! Thanks, as ever, for the plug. Yes, I've stopped referencing the Verse & Worse site as a main source for FP because it's not updated regularly. Graham, on the other hand, very quickly updates his site. With the exception that this week he's on holiday and won't be back until, I think, Tuesday, so it'll be a few days after the mailing list goes out before non-subscribers can access the part of the info he puts up.
