For blues fans inthe Surrey/Berks area UK here is the schedule for Ascot's Jagz (At the Station Pub,Station Rd next to Ascot Station)

BLUES MOVES FROM TUESDAYS TO THURSDAYS STARTING SEPTEMBER 19TH

The Blues Club opens @8pm with an entrance charge of £5(£4 members) Higher entrance charges will apply to Special Bands, Doors at 8.00pm

September 19th - The Papa George Band - We could not ask for a better start to the season Papa George along with his superb backing band delivers maximum Rhythm & Blues every time [sorry to miss this as I was in Greece, enjoyed him last time-great slide]

September 26th - Lightnin' Willy & the Poorboys - A welcome return for Willy & the Boys who are over from the states for a tour of Britain. Great Vocals, Strong Guitar and Harmonica combine to make this a great night of Blues. Entrance £7 & £6 members.

October 3rd - Bob Hokum & the Guv'nors

October 10th - Station House [Sam Kelly's own band- see below]

October 17th - TBA

October 24th - Sugarland Slim [largely acoustic delta blues from a young band]

October 31st - The Robin Bi Bi Band [hated the kaftan last time, Robin]

November 7th - Big Joe Turners Memphis Blues Caravan [Rock steady bass from one of BB King's sidesmen and his young British band, pity his accent makes all the introductions inaudible]

November 14th - TBA

November 21st - Adrian Byron Burns [Guest vocalist on Bill Wyman's Double Bill album]

November 28th - THE FOUNDATIONS
[TBA must be a good band- they're on twice! I see Jagz favourite blues drummer, Sam Kelly is appearing in the house band at the Shaftesbury Theatre for the new production 125th St which is about the Apollo Theatre. I'll be there for most of these, comments in square brackets are my own personal ones!]

Updates to the above(I went to Lightnin' Willie last night, great show): 17th Oct is Connie Lush and Blues Shouter; 14th Nov is Paul Cox Band. Also on Saturday 9th Nov Richie Milton and the Lowdown [Richie is a great young blues harp player and step dancer with a great band] Saturday 30th Nov King Earl Boogie Band "ex-Mungo Jerry men playing blues, jug and R &B".
I'll miss Bob Hokum as I'll be at Camberley listening to the (Paul Jones) Blues Band and I'll give the Foundations a miss as my flares don't fit any more.
For jazz fans the great girl singer Lee Gibson is on twice: 23rd Oct and 27th Nov, the very talented (and large!) Trinity College of Music Big Band are on on 30th Oct, and the all-girl Farnborough Hill School Swing Band, on the 13th Nov, got rave reviews last time (and I hear their music is pretty good, too).I shall also be going to South Hill Park Barcknell on 14th Dec to see Sonny Black and the Dukes, a Jagz regular.
For Folkies, the Fureys are at Windsor Theatre on 24th Nov and we'll be going to that too.)

Its a shame the Ascot sessions clash with Maidenhead Folk Club mate,
otherwise I might come down and try to drag it all down to my level.
Good luck with it all any way.

While on this subject, where did Sam Viner (ex-Maidenhead and Sidmouth singer of the year) go?

is alive and well in Wokingham. She is hoping to get to some local clubs over the coming months as she is developing a couple of projects that she is researching including recording a cd of her own. Her voice is better than ever thanks to a life saving operation to correct a genetic defect in her aorta which was about to blow in 1999. Sam would love to hear from anybody who remembers her and can be contacted on email: buffin@waitrose.com.

Sadly the blues nights at Jagz fizzled out last year and the trad and big band nights haven't resumed this Autumn so I have to go further afield. Luckily the big band Chosen Few are playing a charity concert in the school at the end of my road (couldn't get much nearer!)and we're going to see Bill Wyman and the Temperance Seven before Xmas. We have been to blues nights at South Hill Park but they haven't resumed since June.
