Hi

So I am doing the secret santa this year. So if anyone wants to take part please PM me with your permanebt mailing address and state which country you are in and whether you are happy or not to send pressies to another country.

We need to get this sorted as I have been informed the post can take a long time in the run up to this joyful and Merry (more emphasis on the merry!!) time!!

There is a limit of $20 on spending thats around £15 for all us UK catters. It is supposed to be secret so you wont know who you are going to receive a pressie off. Hope it is a much fun as last year!!

I think we should have a HINTS thread, separate, like we did last year. I don't think we sent all of that info to the coordinator, did we? Seems like a lot more for her to have to consider for matches than is fair. I probably have CRS, but I thought we just sent her our name, mailing addy, and if we'd send to another country or not? By the way, as far as the questionnaire is concerned, I think that the answers should be posted on the Hints thread if one desires to make one's info public, but should not be absolutely required. I think that the hints and jokes passed back and forth between Santas and Santees are more fun for everyone to read when everyone is familiar with the wish-lists on which those hints and jokes are based.

Last year's attitude was that if you didn't fill out the questionnaire, you'd better be happy with the present you got! Everyone did seem to be happy... except for those couple of people who did not receive pressies at all. That seems to have been the only problem with last year's exchange. Hopefully we can all make sure that everyone gets his/her gift this year!

Material gifts that have meaning behind them are quite another thing, though (like someone sending you a copy of their new CD or giving a gift that's really tailored for the receiver). So, Misophist, I don't think your comment is contrary to the Christmas spirit -- but neither is the Secret Santa exhange. It's all in the spirit you bring to it.

I'm looking forward to doing "Secret Santa" this year (double entendre noted but not intended).

As for the hints list... sometimes, the recipient doesn't want to give hints... doesn't want to steer the Santa in question in any one direction or another, but wants, instead to be completely surprised.

In case this happens to you (as it did with me), dear Santas, I recommend the following:

Use the wonderful (and unique, as far as I can tell) Mudcat feature and click on your santee's Mudcat name in any thread it appears. This will bring up a list of all of that person's posts. Reading people's posts, what they talked about last week or last year, can give you a sense of their passions and foibles and wishes.

This is fun, even if you do get hints... For one thing, it might get you into threads you wouldn't have explored otherwise...

One suggestion for the hints list: A question on allergies, or other "Please do *not* get me ____" question... I'd hate to send someone a homemade treat, for example, only to have it be something they can't enjoy...

Another good point, Capri. Sometimes it's more important to know what a person does NOT want or can NOT use/wear (e.g., no more ties, no fragrances, no pink clothing, no banjo music, etc.) than to have them list what they are wishing for. Not a bad idea to add a Q or two about things to avoid.

I think the idea is you dump all the names into a hat, bowl, whatever & draw. You should not to try to match certain individuals anymore than we should be requesting certain Santee's. The Randomness is part of the fun. To comply with the "only in my country" requests, the UK for instance, put all UK Santee's names together. Draw names for the Santas who have request a UK Santee. Then take the leftover names & combine them with the ones left from US, Oz, etc.

Burke....don't worry it is all in hand. I am trying not to put the same people together as last year and people have been really good and have told me who they were paired up with last year. THe point I was trying to make is that there is not much point in sending the questionnaires to me unless you don't want to post it on in the forum and then I could send it on to your secret santa.
