Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the ally From: GUEST Date: 15 Oct 02 - 03:50 PM Right. Thread 31335, for which I gave a clickie, is on the Bully in the Alley (Sally....) song, with several versions including Hugill's, and comments. The other thread is the "Town" song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the ally From: Schantieman Date: 15 Oct 02 - 04:55 PM So what's Shinbone Al then? Tom Lewis reckons there's a town in Alabama with this name but I can't find it on the map. Pretty unlikely to put the postal address in a song anyway! Any mudcatters live near there? Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the ally From: vectis Date: 15 Oct 02 - 05:23 PM I thought Shinbone Alley was off the main pub'n club road in the docks of Kingston Jamaica. Reknowned as a place where sailors got robbed when drunk ashore. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the ally From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Oct 02 - 05:34 PM "Shinbone Al" is one of those generic Sailortown streets which crops up all over the world, including Wiscasset, Maine. It was also a common phrase in Minstrel songs in the late 19th century. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: dick greenhaus Date: 15 Oct 02 - 05:42 PM More specifically, Shinbone Alley (like Sugar Hill and Tiger Bay) referred to the local Tenderloin district. Not restricted to sailors...."You ought to see my blue-eyed Sally Lives way down in Shinbone Alley.." (Bill Monroe, "Dance All Night") |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: GUEST Date: 15 Oct 02 - 05:48 PM This has been gone over before. Shinbone Alleys in every port town. See 43912 Shinbone They are mostly gone, unfortunate victims of gentrification. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: GUEST,Richie Date: 16 Oct 02 - 12:50 AM I guess I was tired when I made the last post. The Wills song is "Dance All Night." I've sung the song before, just didn't remember the name. It's sort of the jazz version of "Cripple Creek." Who knows where Wills borrowed that line- "Lives way down on Shinbone Alley." "Stay All Night" is a fiddle tune by Tommy Jarrell, Fred Cockerham. -Richie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: Sorcha Date: 16 Oct 02 - 01:18 AM The recording I have by Bob Wills is "Stay All Night". I'll look and see exactly what it is tomorrow, but it is the Counry Collection by the Smithsonian. From memory: Stay all night, stay a little longer, Dance all night, dance a little longer Pull off your coat, throw it in the corner, Don't see why you don't stay a little longer. But yes, Shinbone Alley is in there....... Lives way down on Shinbone Alley, The number on the gate is the number on the door, Next house over is the grocery store. Something like that, anyway. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: GUEST,Richie Date: 16 Oct 02 - 07:59 AM Sorcha- Did Wills write "Stay All Night"? I just checked and I have a version of it collected by Lomax in 1944. It also has the "Shinbone Alley" lyrics. -Richie |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bully in the alley From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Oct 02 - 11:38 AM Likely the phrase "Lives way down on Shinbone Alley" goes back to 19th century minstrel show singing but I can't find my citation now. Charley Noble |
