I learned half my Italian from jingles on Greek radio. One, repeated around Christmas time for years, said "MIGLIORI AUGURI from xxxx (brand of spaghetti)". It stuck in the brain. Ten years ago I happened to pop into an Italian restaurant in Amsterdam first thing on Christmas morning (don't ask), and the family that ran it were all gathered handing round presents. Without thinking I blurted "migliori auguri" to them. You guessed it - they came back at me with a torrent of congratulatory Italian, surprised at my mastery of their tongue!

Back to English: One I can never get out of my mind is for Penguin chocolate biuscuits, with fake stutter:

P-Pickup a Penguin
A lovely P-Penguin
When you P-P-P-Pickup a Penguin there's so much more to enjoy
It's bigger, and chocolatey, with chocolate filling too
When you feel a bit P-P-P-Peckish, what's bigger and best for you?
A P-P-P-Penguin!
When you feel a bit P-P-P-Peckish, P-P-P-Pickup a Penguin

Thsnks!

Chambers caskets are so fine,
Made of sandal-wood and pine.
When your loved ones pass away,
Have them pass the Chambers way.
If your loved ones have to go
Dial Colunbia triple-0
Chambers customers all sing,
"Death, oh death, where is thy sting?"

Wednesday is Prince day, hey what a treat!
Wednesday is Prince day up and down the street.
Gals making noodles, spaghetti and sauce,
Putting elbows on the table,
Even brand new brides are able.
This very Wednesday, start serving Prince,
Brighten Wednesday up with Prince.

Man oh Manischewitz kosher wine for me.
Man oh Manischewitz, sweet as wine can be.
Yes the best there is

Man oh Manischewitz, what a wine!

Guest JTT:   VERY early in the 50's I recall being aboard a rusty old tanker, the ESSO Tioga, creeping into Cork bay and hearing another verse to your sausage jingle:

Oh it's true they're the talk of the nation,
a sausage exceeding new.
So the next time you visit your grocer,
tell him no other sausage will do.
To his other suggestions say "no sir,"
it's Donnelly's sausages for you!

And what was the jingle "Tasty, tasty, very, very tasty" advertising!?!

Oh, we've got boxy cars for boxes,
Commuter trains for Dans
Parlor cars for ladies,
Money-saving plans
On the Long Island Railroad (BOAARD!)

Incomplete, and probably imprecsie, but 'twas sung by Oscar Brand and ran on radio in NY for years.
Dans was short for Dashing Dan, the LIRR's cartoon logo ("The Route of the Dashing Commuter")

GUEST,Bill Kennedy posted the old Shaeffer beer jingle. Farther above I had posted the version I remember of a Ballentine Beer jingle. Here's a couple more:

I'm from Milwaukee, and I ought'a know
It's draft brewed Blatz beer, wherever you go
smoother
fresher
less filling, that's clear
Blatz is Milwaukee's finest beer.

National Beer, National Beer
You'll like the taste of National Beer
and while we're singing we're proud to say
it's brewed on the shores ...
of the Chesapeake Bay.

I can remember two different tunes for Hamm's beer jingles ("from the land of sky-blue waters"), but I can't quite recall the words.

Now, this one's pretty obscure unles you were around Syracuse, NY, in the 60s. They had great singing commercials in Syracuse...

there was more to the Schaeffer Beer jingle mentioned above, it went

Shaeffer, is the, one beer to have, when your having more than one,

Shaeffer's pleasure doesn't fade, even whn the thirst is done,

The most rewarding flaver in this man's world,

for people who are having fun.

Shaeffers is the one beer to have, when you're having more than one.

and surprised no one has mentioned

What'll you have?

Pabst Blue Ribbon

What'll you have?

Pabst Blue Ribbon?

What'll you have?

Pabst Blue Ribbon, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer

the beer that made Milwaukee famous!

My dog's better than your dog,....My dog's better than yours,
My dog's better cause he eats Ken'l Ration,
My dog's better than you.

Get that juice up to Lawson's in forty hours...
Oh, one man sleeps while the other man drives
On that non-stop Lawsons run, and that cold cold juice
in the tank truck caboose, stays as fresh as the Florida sun

Roll on, Big O!

Get that juice up to Lawsons, in forty hours

O the oranges ripen in the Florida sun,....
and we pick em, and we squeeze, just as fast as you please,

can't remember the rest, Oh well.

I remember the Gillete jingle as being

You'll look sharp, when you use Gilette
You'll feel sharp, when you use Gilette
You'll be sharp, when you use Gillete
It's the ...something, something....razor blade

Ah, the Merry Mailman. Loved that show,. Starred Ray Heatherton (father of Joey). But back to commercials...

There was a chain of appliance stores in New York called Sunset...
Sunset, Sunset
For appliances you need,
Sunset, Sunset
Everything is guaranteed
Sunset, Sunset
For easy credit, the place to go
Sunset, Sunset,
Call HIckory six-four-oh-oh-oh
HIckory, HIckory, HIckory
Six-four-oh-oh-oh

Contemporaneously, there was what may have been the world's first rap on the radio, a jingle without a tune, just percussion, for Palisades Park:
Now, after all is said and done
It's Palisades for having fun.
So during the day or when it's dark,
Visit this great amusement park,
Palisades Amusement Park.
Skip the bother and skip the fuss (beep beep!)
Take a Public Service Bus
Public Service sure is great
It takes you right up to the gate.

Charmion actually, who can't be bothered re-setting the cookie.

To those who can't remember who sponsored Roy Rogers' TV show, it was General Mills, maker of Post cereals. Remember the branding iron putting the big G on the top of the cereal box?

"Good, good whole-wheat Shreddies!"

My Dad used to quote a jingle he read in an English magazine about 1924:

"High o'er the stile leapt Sunny Jim;
Force [a breakfast cereal] was the power that lifted him."

Cleanser jingles:

"It's so easy when you use LessToil!" (1958-1960)

"Ajax: It cleans like a white tornado!" (declaimed, not sung; early '70s)

"New Ajax laundry detergent: it's stronger than dirt!" (sung; mid-60s, I think)

Mark Cohen - I don't remember a whole lot about that trip. I think it was in the early sixties. Someone had told my Dad about a "back roads" way to get to Atlantic City from DC. I remember looking for a road called "Buckshutem" - I'm not sure that we ever found it.

This was back before gambling transformed Atlantic City. I remember going to a show at the Steel Pier - I think the headliners were the McGuire Sisters.

I remember all of the Gas Station names that you mention. I remember when Esso changed to Exxon. I remember when Amoco changed to American, and later on when American changed back to Amoco! Now the local Amoco stations seem to be changing to BP - very confusing.

Getting back to the subject of jingles (remember jingles? this is a thread about jingles...), I can't really remember any jingles about any of the Gas Stations you mention, except for a dimly remembered snippet that went something like "Texaco tower of power...".

Clueless Don, when your dad drove you to Atlantic City, did you go over the Tacony Palmyra Bridge? The toll was 5 cents...even when I drove across it myself for the first time in 1970, in my dad's '59 Chevy BelAir (the one with the fins). Do you remember Egg Harbor? I loved that name! And the Knife and Fork Inn. My sister and I used to play the gas station game on the drive from Philadelphia through the Pine Barrens to Atlantic City. We'd each choose one gasoline company and count the stations along the way. As I recall, I always chose Atlantic ('cause we were going to Atlantic City, of course!) and I always won. Some of the other stations back then (early 60's) were: Mobil, Esso, Flying A, Gulf, Texaco, Amoco...and the rest are lost for the time being. The opening of the Atlantic City Expressway in 1965 changed that trip dramatically, from farm stands and the Renault Winery to just another big multilane highway. But I digress...We should do a thread on old Atlantic City: "More than Monopoly!"

Aloha,
Mark

The Kingston Trio also did a radio commercial for Ry-Krisp, "the bite-size cracker," and the Limelighters did one for L&M cigarettes:

Start fresh
With L&M
Stay fresh
With L&M
Unlock a whole new world
Of fresh smoking pleasure.
Start fresh, start fresh
With L&M.

They did another L&M commercial where they sang "They give you flavor, flavor, flavor." In a 1988 phone interview either Alex Hassilev or Lou Gottlieb told me that when they were goofing around at that recording session they would sing "They give you cancer, cancer, cancer."

And Tom Glazer told me in a live interview in 1987 0r 1988 that he was still receiving royalties for the Castro Convertible jingle but it was at 1950s rates so it wasn't much. This from the man who wrote "A Dollar Ain't a Dollar Anymore," so he should know.
